Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 I think Finland will beat the Czech but lose against the US. Sweden and Finland always have a hard time against Canada/US, especially on small rinks in North America. I thought Finland has been pretty hard for USA to win in recent years. Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 1. Canada loses Pros: *Ovy (and Dats?) get more respect; finally something to even out the Ovy vs Crosby matchup in terms of big games play. 2. Russia loses Cons: *Using this as an unfounded prop for Crosby > Ovy This is quite hypocritical.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 That bracket is a beautiful thing. Very likely only the Czechs/Finns stand in USA's way of getting to the gold medal game.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 This is quite hypocritical. Not at all. Currently, my beef with the media (including non-professional media such as forums) is that since Crosby has a cup, some people (including professionals) will be like "well, skill and Rockets and blahblahblah, but Crosby has a cup, therefore Crosby > Ovechkin". However, if Ovechkin beats Crosby in the Olympics and medals, "but Ovechkin has a medal/beat Crosby on the world stage" can be used as a counter-argument to that, thus negating that and bringing the argument purely back to skill (or at least make both parties look like clowns), which I prefer to see. Otherwise, it's going to be Crosby >> Ovy because Cup AND Olympics and the media obsession will focus more back to solely Crosby, putting it on one player again instead of two, which is a step in the wrong direction from what I'd like to see. This is all about the media, you see. Particularly the (Canadian) hockey media. The result of this matchup either way is going to be rather annoying.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 I want to see Russia win, just so we can see Pavel vs. Hank and Backstrom playing against his linemates Ovechkin and Semin. That would be fun to watch.
grsbmd 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 The good thing about Canada losing is that no one would be in any hurry to steal Yzerman away from the Wings.

I still think it is hypocritical but I see exactly what you're saying and you are right for the most part. It's still hypocritical that if OV wins a medal or the Gold that one could use that as a counter-argument, but if Crosby wins it then that result can't be used to vault him to an even higher platform, even though it could be used to vault OV to the same-ish/same platform. This is completely as unbiased as possible.
Mickeyisms Rule! 0 Report post Posted February 23, 2010 Canada is partially to blame, but if that OT game cost them a chance to avoid Russia or the qualifiers, part of the blame can fall on the stupid point system. 3 for a win, but 2 for an OT win? Wtf is the difference? Isn't one harder to accomplish anyway? I'm no expert on how the standings work in Olympic play and I'm too lazy to find out. The NHL should think about going to this system. 3 points for a win in regulation. In OT/Shootout, winner gets 2, loser gets 1. Every game is a 3 point game. Kind of makes you NOT want to play for the tie, eh?

Guest L3T5G0W1NG5 Report post Posted February 23, 2010 Canada can blame themselves. The only reason they have to beat Russia and Sweden consecutively is their poor play. I am Canadian but cannot bring myself to cheer for a team that has Pronger, Neidermayer, Getzlaf, Perry, Crosby and the Sharks on the roster. With that said, Go Sweden. I hope we see a rematch of 2006 in Turin. You're not Canadian. I don't want you to go out and cheer when we win gold.

superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted February 23, 2010 You're not Canadian. I don't want you to go out and cheer when we win gold. Being born in Edmonton makes me Canadian thank you very much. I will not cheer IF Canada wins gold. Plain and simple, I am a Red Wings fan before anything. I do not really care about Olympic hockey. All I want to see is that the Red Wings that are taking part in the tournament are achieving success and as such, I back Sweden as they have the largest contingent of Wings. Team Canada is littered with players that I could careless about because of past rivalries with the Red Wings thus I cannot support them.
