GRAND RAPIDS -- Brad May is coming to the Grand Rapids Griffins after all.

The Griffins announced Wednesday night that the 38-year-old NHL veteran is expected to practice with the team Tuesday morning and could make his American Hockey League debut March 4 at Peoria.

The parent club Detroit Red Wings placed May on waivers Feb. 12. He cleared, but the Red Wings gave him time during the Winter Olympics break to think about his future.

After Wednesday night's 3-2 loss to San Antonio, Grand Rapids coach Curt Fraser said he "absolutely" is looking forward to adding May to his roster.

"We need something in that locker room." Fraser said. "Our leadership has been pretty good and they've done a nice job of trying to steer the ship in the right direction, but they need help. I think he will add a lot."

May still could rejoin the Red Wings for the playoffs, when salary cap and roster restrictions won't be an issue.

"We want Brad May to finish the year in the AHL," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "We think he's going to be a good role model for Grand Rapids. He's a good, veteran player to be around our kids.''

May has spent his entire professional career in the NHL, a resume that spans 19 years and 1,041 games.

Only two other plays in Griffins history have appeared in 1,000 NHL games: Kelly Miller, who played his first minor-league game with Grand Rapids in 1999-2000 after 1,057 NHL contests, and Chris Chelios, who had a two-game conditioning stint with the Griffins last season and ranks fourth all-time with 1,644 NHL games.

May has one assist, a minus-5 rating and 66 penalty minutes in 40 games with the Red Wings this season.

He also practiced with the Griffins for a week last fall before he was signed by Detroit on Oct. 8.

without a doubt given the right opponent - we play an Anaheim team, or someone else who is likely to goon it up and he'll play at least one or two games to send a message...

Thank you, I was in a brief meeting and couldn't answer and could not have said it better myself.

Brad May has a much better chance of seeing Ice time than Downey did, and I would wager a better chance than McCarty did, although Mac had the nostalgia thing going for him.

With Maltby out Abs and May should be the 13th and 14th forwards in the postseason IMO.

Wait, we're already in the playoffs?

Isn't it obvious? With the Lily's imminent return on the horizon, how could we fail to lose a single game? The only uncertain thing about the rest of the season is whether or not they will let a struggling Lidström retain the captaincy - it is only a matter of time before Lilja gets it (either Monday or next season).

Great picture. I was just looking for one from the March 6 game. It was Star Wars night and Darth Vader came out for the ceremonial puck drop. No one from either team wanted any part of it. Finally Brad May stepped up to the task. Quite the difference on March 27. Miss Michigan (crown and all!) came out for the puck drop. You never seen the boys move so fast to volunteer. Even the goalies fought to do the honors. Tards (the captain) insisted on doing it himself.

LMAO.

May will be back for the playoffs...

With limited ice time maybe. There's only one spot or no spots at all remaining when the whole team is healthy. Abdelkader and May will be the ones to battle for it.

If everything goes well we don't need to change the lines at all. Draper-Helm-Eaves has been solid the whole season and it seems that we have two solid scoring lines as well now. Cleary and Miller will definitely be in the remaining line. So Williams, May or Abdelkader will be the one with them in that line.

I think we have only good options here. Three very different players for different situations. Williams as the right-shooter to add some offense and be the point guy in PP. Abdelkader as the young energy forward with good two-way skills. May as the enforcer who also plays well defensively.

I'm feeling good. Just hoping there won't be any injuries.
