3/1 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Avalanche 2

Loved the first period. Hated the second. Was okay with the third.

For a while I thought that the Wings were back to their old (good old) form, and then for a while I was seeing the typical collapse and poor defense.

But I did notice our offensive awareness is so much better than it was. Well, except for Flip who just doesn't know what to do with a puck when he has it within 15 feet of the goal. But everyone else is much better with their timing and their shots and passing. No more blind passes or shots into feet or just wide. Again, except for Filpulla who continues to be useless near the net. I noticed that he missed more than just the obvious empty net shot. There was one point where if he would have shot it would have sailed into the open net but instead he switched hands and went in front of the net.

Overall GREATLY improved, but still missing something.

Franzen is money.

Howard is winning, keep him in net even if he let in that softie.

Lidstrom+Datsyuk=taking the Avalanche to school

Stuart=Great defensively

Ericsson=Go back to basics

Lilja: welcome back to the big show, brother. Great simple game.

Fraser: Damn you and your hair

Ok, so, rundown.

The good:

1st line was made of win. Franzen behind the net and around the boards, Homer in the center, and Datsyuk being Datsyuk. The only real problem here is that sometimes Datsyuk doesn't have someone to pass to without much speed on the wings, but as long as he can set people up the way he does, there's no real way for another team to take advantage of it.

Not only were most of the star players good (Datsyuk/Lidstrom/Franzen and too a lesser extent Raffi), but the role players played their game during the first and third. Eaves, Homer, Cleary, and Helm all played well when not getting Ref-f***ed and showed an ability to take the momentum back after a let-down, which has been sorely missed. Also, the 5/6 of the defensive corps was amazing. Stuart/Konner may have played better together tonight than any other time this season.

Lilja only let Ericsson give up one goal, and while he looked a step behind at times, was able to make up for it by making good decisions. Possibly the only bad decision was trusting Draper too much to not give up a scoring chance.

We had heart I think! I'm not sure, I haven't seen it in forever, but I think I saw something.

Howard made huge saves when needed.

The bad:

Line #2. Watching Cleary and Z skate into each other while Bert skated away in the middle of nowhere was depressing. Even when they had pressure, they generated no quality scoring chances. Clearly Flippula deserves a promotion to a place where he won't be relied on to score.

Ericsson pinches and runs away from the puck, punches the elderly, and spits in the face of the homeless. In addition to being a terrible human being, he's a godawful hockey player. If you want to salvage him, consider trying him out as a forward because the guy has no defensive ability whatsoever.

Howard let in a s***ty second goal. I don't think anyone will ever complain if he only lets in 2 goals a game, though.

Nice to see all the Wings fans out in force at the Avs game tonight. Winning in their barn just never gets old.... :D

The two Avs fans we were surrounding were lamenting their fate.

Got the token Homer recall - and still won (3-2 scoreboard 4-2 actual).

Nice to see Lilja back.

Fun to be on the glass (for once) watching the Wings - likely my only NHL game this year.

Here's to STAYING in a PO spot and keeping the winning going.... :thumbup:

that was a hard fought battle for the wings but they looked really good out there and brought their old selves out for a change in the first period and took the play to the other team for once this year.

I was at the game. Wings playing well + Avs choking hard = me being very, very happy. Though I think the best part was this little kid running around in a Wings shirt, saying "Red Wings! Red Wings!" We high-fived quite enthusiastically. Then again, I was high-fiving just about every Wings fan I saw.

Recorded the game through AFN and was so excited to get into work so I could finally watch a Red Wings game and wouldn't you know it...our sattelite was down from 5am to10am Iraq time. Can you guess what time the game came on here in Iraq? Can you also guess who recorded 5 hours of a blue screen that only said "no signal"? Yep....this guy! Oh, well....I'm glad we won!

Just watched in now in the morning

- Great 1st and 3rd period, that 2nd period i just wanna forget

- Awful disallowed goal, holmstrom didn't prevent andersson to make a save at all, BS.

- Franzen, Datsyuk, Holmstrom was awesome tonight.

- Bertuzzi can't handle the puck anymore, just loses it every other second.

- Filppula continue to miss open nets, 1 open net and another where he just could have backhanded it roof-daddy but screwed up again

- Didn't notice much of Lilja and that's probably a good thing, Ericsson was on the ice for 2 or 3 goals this time still weak around the net.
