Frederick Meyer

Here is a guy completely under the radar, he only made 600,000 last year.

He is about Rafalski's size but grittier and can throw some mean hits for his size and also the old school hipcheck, probably more frequently than anyone besides Ballard.

I think even though he is smaller he would be a good fit in our d core because he plays bigger than he is and comes at a cheap price.

i actually like this guy, he was only -2 last year on the islanders... do you know how much ice time he gets? or what d-man he is on the islanders

-2 on the isles is def a plus, he averaged 16 min a game, i think the isles rotated their D around alot so it is hard to tell what pairing he was normally, especially since Martinek was injured most of the season and Sutton left at the deadline. he was 13th in the league amongst dmen in hitting with 178. 87 blocked shots. 64 GP.

I dont know what pair D he is but in 05 with the Flyers he put up 27PTS in 57GP which isnt to bad, the last 5 Isles games his TOI was anywhere between 14min and 23min so my guess is defintly top 4

yeah i did see that he had really good numbers on the flyers his first yeear and a +10. also hes only 29. have the wings talked about him at all?

I would never have even thought about Meyer...but yeah I'm definately all for it if we can get him for around the 1 mill mark

he played some major minutes for a very subpar Islanders club and only ended up -2. I think that says a lot for him. He can also hit really well and is very positionally sound.

Make it happen Kenny

freddy meyer- 64gp 15p -2

brad stuart- 82gp 20p -12

To be fair Stuart took on a huge role at the beginning of the year, and I think it tired him out. Let's not forget that he's been a beast in the playoffs as well.

As far as Meyer goes, I saw him when I was looking up suitable #6 defensemen for the team. I was discouraged by his size, but he really seems to hit like he's a bigger guy. Those are only two videos, though, and I wonder if his hits would be more punishing than some of the large "candidates". His added point production would be nice, though.

Also, he's Freddy Meyer IV and he wears #44... he'd have to battle Bertuzzi (assuming he comes back) in a game of checkers for it.

;) Who got picked off waivers and by whom?

I play a lot of NHL games on X-box 360, and if I remember right he was on the Isles, they put him on waivers and then Phoenix picked him up. Then Phoenix placed him on waivers and the Isles took him back. It's kind of troublesome that he'd be tossed around like that, though.

This is something that people on this website routinely forget: if someone who is flying under the radar has had a great season, we will not be able to get them at the same cheap price.

well he hits a lot and block shots so he must be pretty good right? definitely a steal at 600k

remember the isles are a terrible team and he was -2 on the season and he has shown offensive upside in the past, could be a guy who fits in the DRW system

He throws the hipcheck more frequently than the open ice shoulder, but he definitely knows how to step up on guys, and he was 13th among dmen in hits, according to hockeyfights he only has 1 fight to his credit, beating max talbot.

If we're looking at this guy saying he's going to be a fairly big hitter, why would we get a 5'10 guy when theres guys out there that will be around the same price, 6'2 and big hitters.

Definitely wouldn't be my first choice.

Another option is Kurtis Foster, but he will probably get a larger raise for the reason you stated above and because he got 42 pts last year, Aaron Johnson and John Scott are FAs but they are pretty much pylons and I have yet to see John Scott throw a devastating bodycheck despite his size. I could see Mike Weaver being a possibility but he is older than Meyer and about the same size. The other guy with a comparable amount of hits is Francis Boullion, again, a smaller guy.

the under 900,000$ dman range is incredibly weak and Meyer is probably the best hitter of the crop.

I want Sutton as much as anybody, but I'm trying to look at this realistically, on getting a guy who is cheap but solid and worth the investment.

That is correct. Freddy Meyer is a good third pairing defensemen who, regardless of his small statue, doesn't mind using his body.

For under or around a mil, I'd love to see him in Detroit at some point.

I think with the cap going up, Lids, Homer and most likey Bert taking cheaper contracts we'll be able to spend a bit over a million on a dman. Lilja's contract was 1.2 so we can definitely spend that much on a replacement.

That opens up quite a few more possibilites because for around 1 mill to 1.5 mill it makes bigger guys like Exelby, Boynton, and Jurcina possibilites.

If we want a cheap guy that could be a mentor for the younger D-men then someone like Hnidy or Strudwick could be pretty good options.

I really think Strudwick is a good possibility, he had a bad year on an even worst team so for the same price I'm sure he could be signed and whenever I've watched him play he hasn't seemed to bad at all. He's fairly mean as well.
