ESPN considers Lidstrom the "Perfect Human"

Randomness?

Yeah, why use those exact lines from the anthem? Why have them in the winged wheel accompanied by the second bar of the national anthem quoted in almost-the-swedish-colors letters?

Or is Lidas called that and I've just missed it for more than half my life?

Yeah I tried really hard to get the colors right to be honest. I googled the flag and got a whole mess of different shades and I didn't know which one to pick. Sorry about that my fellow Swede fans. Or any Swede for that matter.

I wanted to pick something from the anthem because I felt like all Swedes would get it. In regards to those particular lines, I just thought they were the best fit for a way to describe Lidstrom and Zetterberg's demeanors and styles of play. Quiet and yet beautiful for hockey standards.

If I missed the mark then I'm sorry. I tried...

Nothing to be sorry about, I thought it was great!

And to be honest, there's quite a few shades of blue and yellow that are deemed acceptable. My favorite is the royal blue, which is probably why I called your choice of color almost correct.

The line from the anthem does fit pretty well, especially for Lidas. I was just taken aback. Normally you'd excpect to see the first line, but that doesn't really tell a story about Lidas, which your choice of lines do.

I didn't mean that you'd done a bad job. I liked it a lot.

I actually think your choices are better. You could do the obvious and have Z and Lidas in Swedish uniforms and use the first line of the national anthem, but that would be run-of-the-mill.

Random might not be the best choice of words, it just lacks the most obvious choices. That's a good thing.

Yours has originality.

League consensus: Nicklas Lidstrom a hockey mastermind

“It’s like in racquetball when there’s a young guy chasing the ball while the experienced guy stands in the middle and waits for the ball to come to him,” says Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini. “That’s how Lidstrom plays hockey.”
“In chess, they say you need to think three or four moves ahead,” says NHL vice president Brendan Shanahan, who was Lidstrom’s teammate in 1996-2006. “Nick would think eight or 10 moves ahead.”

...

“He thinks two or three seconds faster than everyone else,” Shanahan insists.

Shanahan recalls Red Wings players made it a game in practice to try to make a pass over Lidstrom’s stick.

“It was a joke really because he would bat everything out of the air and then give you that little smile,” Shanahan says, laughing.

“He’s the best two-way defenseman in the world,” Holland says. “No one has better hand-eye coordination to knock down pucks. No one has more patience with the puck. He plays the game in his head at another level.”

A great win for the team and yet another Goddamned minus for Lidstrom tonight... Man... I really hope that changes for the better. You don't want the media to point to his plus minus when it comes to the Norris trophy debate.

I wonder how he would be as a coach.

We all know Lidstrom is going to probably take a front office position when he retires. It actually would be cool if he took a job as an assistant coach.

If we can't have him on the ice providing defense, perhaps he could instruct others on how to do it. I think he'd be more useful to us as a defensive coach/assistant coach, than say......scouting or whatever it is they offer every retired wing :)

I'm pretty sure Lidstrom can do whatever the hell he wants when he retires though :)

If his goal is to buy a small island, and rule a clan of monkeys with an iron fist, while they bring him berries and treasure as offerings, I'm pretty sure he could do that.

The Perfect Human is now a -1 on the season. I'm scared.

It was definitely time for a change in the 5 man units.

I feel like Lidstrom and Stuart started racking up minuses out there once the Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi line started to slump. I'm not saying that Nick and Stewie aren't at fault at all. I just think that whole five man unit started to lose trust in each other. Now of course with Pav and Z split, the lines are much different but I hope for Nick's sake that he finds himself in a situation with better chemistry with the forwards.

Regardless of his +/-, tell me......that you don't feel just better when he's on the ice.

It's sad he's at -1, but it's not like he's ineffective, and it's not like we have ANYONE who is better in the D slots.

Lidstrom has defied the laws of hockey many times. Now he's defying the statistics too.

+/- is a fluff stat. In theory, the leading scorer in the world, could end up negative. It's a cool stat to look at when trying to determine overall production, but keep in mind Lidstrom plays against the top lines in the NHL, and our top line whom he is behind, is generally half injured.

I think he does have a few more "Bad" nights than is normal for him, but all in all, he's still the top defense guy on our team, period.

Besides, our offense is a lot more balsy than it use to be. Nick use to quarterback our powerplay, but this year especially, we've focused a lot more on forward playmaking and goal scoring. In the past, we relied a LOT more on defensive scoring, left wing lock, neutral zone traps, etc, with defense controlling the play. Our style is a lot different now, and we suffer a lot more turnovers in our puck possession game........but we score a lot more pretty goals than we use to. A lot of our offensive time is spent down deep, behind the net, trying to get the short pass/quick shot.

Rarely ever will you see Lidstrom set up a play from the blue line anymore (Ok not rarely, but less often), and while our offense is pretty freaking good, we spend a lot more time in our own zone than we use to because...well....that's what turnovers do.

Nick is a nearly flawless defenseman on the attack, and he's brilliant at neutral zone control, but in our own zone Nick generally sets up to end the attack and get back to the other end, but he's not often near or protecting the net.....so a lot of the goals against us while he is on the ice are more the fault of the forwards who made the turnover, than Nick's failure as a defense-man. Nick is a great defenseman, but he can't teleport, and I think his +/- almost more accurately reflects our horrible habit of turning over the puck......than it does his skill level.

I'm high, I don't know if that made sense.

As an avid EA sports NHL fan, I feel more than qualified to make this judgment :) jk jk

Actually it's widely known that he will move back to Sweden once he retires.

But perhaps he can be a scout and find the next version of himself.

I just thought this morning that Nick and Kenny must have a conversation here and there about young defensemen in the NHL (or any league for that matter) who exhibit a similar high degree of intelligence in their play that perhaps only a mind like Lidstrom's can truly identify. I wonder what names come up during those conversations.

We all know he's going to move back to Sweden for his retirement from playing hockey. As far as looking for future versions of Lidstrom, theoretically he should be the perfect scout for that once he learns how to observe prospects and use his all-world intelligence to accommodate within his mind the absolutely fundamental principle that none of them are finished products.
