Burnside's Report

Before he traveled to Florida, Detroit GM Ken Holland polled a large number of his players about what they thought of the rules and what concerns they had. The vast majority said they liked the rules, Holland told ESPN.com. They like the rules designed to protect the vulnerable player, but they also want the onus on the puck carrier to keep his head up. They want to be able to separate a player from the puck, legally, Holland said.

"I think it's a safer workplace today than it was a year ago," he said. "I would say to you we've got a great game. I don't think the game's ever been better. I think the game's in incredible shape."

I'd like to know everyone's opinion on this. I think the rules are about right but the Chara hit was rough. I'm not saying he hit him on purpose and he intentionally injured but there could be some serious discussion about that.

I said this in another thread previously, but I don't think cheap and dangerous hits will be eliminated from the game simply by larger suspensions, fines, and more rule tweaking.

Players just need to respect each other more.

I agree 100% with you Chelios and Mickey Redmond say it all the time that players dont really respect each other now a days, and the cheap hits wont end until the respect factor comes back.

I do think the rules have improved, but they're more of an after-the-fact treatment than a preventative measure, and certain numbskulls don't seem to be able to think far enough ahead about what the consequences will be after they take a head shot. I'd like to see them at least give the smaller shoulder pads a try...maybe it won't be the solution, but it's worth seeing what happens.

As for the rules themselves, I'd like to see them be a little harsher on repeat offenders (:cough:MattCooke:cough:). Some people just don't get the message no matter how many times you tell them "no," and there need to be consequences for flouting the rules over and over again like that.

Well unfortunatley Im not sure anyone has a concrete answer on how to get players to respect one another more. Is it by suspensions? Enforcers doing there jobs more? or does it start with there parents and upbringing? But the funny thing about people complaining about respecting each other on this thread is 50% of people said yes this is a bad idea for a poll........ perhaps the respect starts with us.
