droz 5 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 What do you think of him as our backup next year if Osgood retires?
stevieisthebest 80 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 Whose Joey McDonald?... But the ways MacDonald is playing, I wouldn't mind it... Sorry, dick move
Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted March 29, 2011 Don't see why not. Solid and cheap, exactly what a backup should be 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this
Mabuhay Red Wings 177 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 I prefer Ozzie because I want him to be the winningest goalie in Wings history.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 All for it. As much as I stick up for Osgood when people act like morons towards him in here, the way things are going I think MacDonald should be the backup for playoffs unless Osgood magically gets healthier sooner than expected (which I want, but am not expecting). Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 I'd be perfectly comfortable with it. MacDonald has been a fantastic back-up goalie.
RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 He's got my vote ... if Ozzie decides to retire. If Ozzie would like another shot at being the backup, I'd bring them both in to training camp/preseason and have them battle it out.
Mabuhay Red Wings 177 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 He plays hard and he doesn't seem to be one of the main reasons a team loses but still... You look at Ozzie and his notorious mental lapses and he just seems to win. Well, Macdonald, for whatever reason, plays a good game but losses just seem to follow him around. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 Sure, maybe MacDonald, though there may be better alternatives out there. I've been an Ozzy fan over the years, or at least not an Ozzy hater, but he doesn't make sense as a backup. He's never proven himself very good in the backup role. stormboy 47 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 the way he's been playing lately, hell yeah. in his last nine appearances (whether starts or in relief) he's stopped 216 of 230 shots, for a .939 save percentage. in eight starts, he's let in 22 goals on 257 shots, for a .917 save percentage but a 2.73 GAA (which includes a five-goal-against win against Columbus). overall, he's got a .930 save percentage and 2.13 GAA, both of which are bests on the team. obviously, he hasn't gotten the workload that jimmy has, so that's going to play a big role in it -- which is why i'm not suggesting that we promote joey to our playoff starter. it is worth noting that jimmy has two shutouts in 58 starts; joey has one shutout in eight starts. all that to say, he could totally fall apart at any time. but right now, yeah, i'd be cool with him as a backup if Oz retires. i liked joey the first time we had him. i don't know if anyone else remembers this, but a few years ago we had the longest, currently active non-shutout streak going. it was up to a hundred and some games in which we'd scored at least one goal (we were second on the all-time list, IIRC, to calgary, who once went like 260-some games without being shutout). the night we lost that streak, we lost to (i think) the blues -- what i know for sure is that joey lost that game 1-0, and it was heartbreaking. anyway...random tangent...carry on. Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 If he can play more to keep the workload off Jimmy while not screwing the pooch then I'm all for it.
redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 no point going out and paying for an overpriced backup when joey mac can be signed for the league minimum all for it 1 Rick D reacted to this

Rick D 350 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 If Osgood retires, and Mac takes over as the back up, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up the starter by the end of the season. I'm not saying he's the best ever, or that Howard is crap. Just saying I wouldn't be surprised.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 MacDonald is certainly making the most of his time, I honestly don't know if he's the answer as a backup, but if Ozzie can't return I wouldn't be against it, either. He's been fantastic so far.
MGreenberg 105 Report post Posted March 29, 2011 I don't see why we wouldn't keep him for another year or two. I think he could actually get about 30 games a season with the Wings to take the load off Howard more, since I don't really think Howard is the type of goalie who should get 60 games a season. 1 Rick D reacted to this
wingslogo19 281 Report post Posted March 30, 2011 Joey Mac has played well this year, I think he's proven himself. He would be a cheap sign. If Ozzie retires I wouldn't see why not
