I don't know where you're getting $8 million from. Our UFA/RFAs next year are Hudler, Bertuzzi, Holmstrom, Helm, Abdelkader, Lidstrom, Stuart, and Kronwall (assuming everyone we sign this year is a multi-year deal) The only guys from that list that will be getting raises are Kronwall, Helm and Abdelkader, and maybe Stuart. Holmstrom will probably retire and could be replaced by someone younger and cheaper, Bertuzzi will get either the same or less money or retire and be replaced by someone cheaper, Hudler will probably get a pay cut (if he isn't traded or let go).

That leaves Kronwall ($2.5 million raise at the very most), Helm ($1 million raise) Abdelkader ($1 million raise). I could see giving Stuart an extra half million, anymore than that and he could be easily replaced for someone younger and cheaper. Even if the cap only goes up $2 million next year all we would have to do is let Hudler go and we'd be able to spend all the way up the cap this year and re-sign all our free agents next year. Lidstrom's only retiring if and when he's ready.

I was referring to dangles' roster with Burns on it. I figured about 2.5 for Burns and Kindl, and about 1 each for Stuie, Helm, and Abby. Hudler was already gone, replaced by Jagr. Nick retires + the free cap space he had pays for the raises. Homer replaced by Tatar gives you $1M, Jagr and Bert retire pushes that to $5M and you need a top 6 forward, a 5/6 defenseman, and a depth forward. Doable, even if the cap stagnates, though it'd be tight. That's why I said if we knew the cap would go up it would be alright.

But my main point in that post was more about the unlikely trade for Burns than Richards. Though considering all the uncertainty anyway: The cap/new CBA, development of guys like Smith, Tatar, Mursak, and Emmerton, Nick's plans, Stuart, Kronwall, Helm, and Abby all FAs...

Do you really want to invest a big chunk of cap in one player while also adding another pending UFA who's going to be looking for a sizable raise?

Richards is a great player, but I'm not sure he really fits our situation or our needs.

Yea, but I'm a big believer that you put together the best team possible right now and worry about next years free agents next year. If Holland were able to pull off a trade for Burns AND sign Richards AND sign Wisniewski, you've given yourself a great chance to win right now. Next summer you might have some hard decisions to make as far as who gets a new contract, but isn't it a good problem to have too many defensemen to re-sign than not enough? And if you were Holland and you only had money to sign 3 out of Lidstrom or Burns or Kronwall or Stuart, which 3 would you choose? Stuart's great, but he's no Burns and he for sure ain't no Lidstrom.

I'm not going to post it, but just for kicks, I just put together an obscene roster on capgeek (just filling spots via FA, no trades), just for fun, to see how much it would put us over the cap with the new raise in capspace and... it was still under the cap... holy hell am I excited for 7/1 to get here!

:D

Well, basically, we could afford something like Richards at 7.5, Wiz at 5, Jagr at 2.5, fill in the blanks with the remaining money. Whatever the team looks like after that is bound to be pretty obscene.

Cap space is interesting.

and overpayment for re-signing of players as well (which probably won't happen) - I expect huge things from Kenny and co., starting today

for some reason im not a bieksa fan. i know i should be but im not... kinda got that "bust" feeling for some reason. i like wiz a little better. either would be awesome though. i also think we need to leave a 1 year contract in the d to make room for smith when hes ready next season (if not this season). this means sign 2 dmen (Wiz, Bieksa) to mid length deals and one veteran to a 1 year deal.

I like the Wisnieski option too, just not as much as Bieksa

There are rumors that he re-signed with Vancouver and they just have to make it official. Even if it's not done yet, it sounds like there's about a 99% chance that he doesn't hit free agency.

Ya, this doesn't surprise me one bit. I thought getting Bieksa was a little bit of a pipe dream

Bieksa has been in the league for several years and has improved every year, this wasn't an over the night thing, he's a very good defenseman and showed it in the SCF... I think he's better than Wiz, but as already touched on, I think the chance of him not re-signing in Vancouver is slim to none and therefore Wiz is a MUCH more likely option... also, they only need to sign one top 4 dman and one bottom 2 dman, the rest is filled out... I'm still crossing my fingers for Wiz and Montador...

@DarrenDreger: I'm told chances aren't good Max Talbot re-signs in Pittsburgh. UFA market should give him plenty of options.

I hate Max Talbot, but this would be a big depth loss for the Pens. Maybe we can sign him and make him clean the locker room or something.

He's going to Montreal, and then fans of every NHL save for the Habs will hate him as much as I do
