SwedeLundin77 460 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 Where do you people get this idea that Holland/Babcock have somehow implied that Ericsson will be replacing Rafalski?!? All they've stated is that more will be expected of him and that he'll need to step up. They've also said that he may or may not be given a top 4 spot. It all comes down to if they can find a suitable top 4 guy who is already established, which Holland has stated before and this evening that is his goal. He's not going to overspend, however, and that makes sense. If we lose a little offense, then we tighten up the defense. This is not the end of the world, people. A. I think there is a trade coming as well B. I know this was kind of tongue in cheek, but Little Caesers and the Wings are separate business entities and do not affect one another's profit margins... I know it's in jest, but from a business standpoint, the two are not connected... also, the Wings always turn a profit, even maxing at the cap, so financial burden is not the case
Johnny Diamonds 25 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/07/red_wings_expect_more_out_of_j.html Just reading that makes me feel abit better. Red Wings explored, but mostly stood patIn addition to signing defenseman Mike Commodore to a one-year, $1 million deal, Holland made a pitch to sign a couple of other players, but the price wasn’t right. "Part of it was money, part was opportunity," Holland said. "(Forwards) look at our lineup and don’t want to come here if they can’t be a top-six forward, and we don’t want to pay them (top-six money) if they’re bottom six." WHY??? Why can't he assure a top six forward that he will have a top six spot on the team? Holmstrom(power play specialist) God love em but seriously, he's past it! And he no longer deserves a top six role on this team. Why the hell can't Kenny tell a free agent, hey if you sign with us, we'll move Homer or Bert to a 3rd line, and you'll fit right in on our 1st or 2nd line. WTF? I just don't understand where he is coming from with this bullsh!t. 1 esteef reacted to this
Johnny Diamonds 25 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 I guarantee you Holland doesn't leave 10m in cap space left unspent. Calm down. It's been one day. Do you really think Holland is going to openly say who he's going after? You don't announce these sort of things to the press. In theory that might make sense, but I listen and read pretty much everything Ken Holland says to the Detroit media over the years. And he always says what he means and means what he says. It's impossible to tell what opportunities will present themselves.

TheRedWingsWay 8 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 Anybody can say whatever they want at anytime, is he serious? possibly. Its also possible he doesn't want to get too far ahead of himself by saying "expect a huge trade" only to have nothing happen.

Yes, they signed him in 2008 to the 2008-2009 roster. Excellent post, though. It's pretty impressive that so many people are able to find so many ways to ***** about the best GM in professional sports.

This is a results oriented business you get praise or criticism for what you do today. And when you've retired if you did a great job you get praise for what you did in the past. This is not about 98',02' and 08'. This is about 2011 and what are you doing to win in 2011 and beyond. I don't hate Ken Holland. I like ken Holland and appreciate what he did for the Wings in the past. But going forward he has to continue to do well or I am going to criticize him. Johnny Diamonds 25 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 hm...Jussi Jokinen,$9M/3years,top 6 forward/30 goals scorer It's crazy, Holmstrom is not a top six forward any longer. He's still good as a power play specialist. But he should not be a top six forward. There is definitely room for a quality top six forward on this team. And in my opinion there is not only room for one, but there is a NEED for one. Ken Holland has to address this. And if he doesn't he is making a huge mistake! 1 pucktividi reacted to this
Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 I like how people assume that Holland is just sitting on his ass doing nothing. I mean do people honestly believe that he hasn't actively pursued a lot of the FA's that have signed elsewhere? I mean there are 29 other teams in the mix and most often than not they have a more attractive package that they can offer that the Wings can't (depending on the FA of course). For example, 1 guy I thought we could go after and possibly overpay a bit was Wisniewsky but obviously the deal the Jackets offered was out of the Wings league so they weren't willing to pay the price. You're REALLY going to compare Holland to the team that has a payroll of 220 million dollars? Unbelievable. Anyone that has half a brain will tell you Holland is a better GM than Cashman, Cashman makes some HORRIBLE moves (AJ Burnett, Rafael Soriano, countless others). 4 ogreslayer, pucktividi, Heroes of Hockeytown and 1 other reacted to this

Fine if it will make everyone happy we'll give him an A+ for trying to do something, and then we'll give him a D- for not getting anything done with all these talks he's had. Also, I completely understand now. On one hand Ken Holland is a great GM and does no wrong. And on the other hand (same people say) all our players suck and are not worthy of trades or of value to other teams. redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 Kenny is probably working on getting a top 4 d man as we speak. I won't be disappointed if he doesn't though, I think Smith can jump right in to the top 4. No worries here
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted July 2, 2011 Overall I felt it was a decent first day of Free Agency for the Wings. They signed 2 forwards and 2 defensemen. No really big names but all players strong and able to play a good game here. We want a Big Name Free Agent Signing becasue we want something Big to talk about during the off-season and while signing Big Name Free Agents can be and are great players it's not always the way to go. What matters is Standings, Playoff Position and Championships. I know we had a lot of Cap Space Available but that doesn't mean we should just go blow it. If we can sign 3 or 4 players that can do the same for the price of 1 player than I'm all for that. This team doesn't really make a whole bunch of major deals early in free agency. I say we just play it by ear and see what happens. Yes I want to get the best possible players for the best possible price and whatever that means if it means signing them now or waitin to see if their prices will go down the closer we get to the season. Most improtantly IMO is doing what wee need to do to bring and Championship back to this Organzation. 1 Barrie reacted to this

Look at the wings from the time Holland started and the Cap. The Wings and the Yankees had a lot in common, and a lot of the same grips about overpaid players and buying championships.
