WOW the preds got raped in this one if this tweet is correct:

Canadiens acquire B. Geoffrion, R. Slaney, and 2nd round draft pick in 2012 from NSH for H. Gill and a conditional 5th round pick in 2013

Geoffrion is a guy who's failed to really produce at the NHL like he did at the University of Wisconsin (6g 5a in 42 NHL games over the last two seasons) and he's really struggling this season: 0g 3a in 22gp. Slaney's an undrafted 23 year old character forward that Hockey's Future didn't even rank among Nashville's top 20 prospects.

So really it's an underachieving mid to top level prospect and a 2nd rounder for Gill. Slaney for a conditional 5th is a wash so I factored them out.

IMHO the Canadians came out slightly ahead here but it's far from a raping.

Ya, tad bit of an overreaction on my part. I just don't think Gill is worth a 2nd round pick, let alone two youngs guys on top of that. But tis the price for mediocre players at the deadline the last couple of years it seems.

In terms of prospect rankings, if you go by Hockey's futures they rank Geoffrion as a 7.0C and Emmerton a 7.0D. In their system the number is a measure of the player's talent and the letter is an estimation of their chances of achieving their NHL potential.

Robert Slaney is an absolute throw-away. He's hard pressed to make most AHL teams.

The only reason why Gill got that kind of return would be his recent playoff experience. And I guess they value guys who are long enough to lay down in front of shots and block the entire net.

You must've watched him on the Marlies.

Geoffrion has struggled to put up points but late last season he was a good player for the Preds. This season definitely has not gone the way he would have liked but I dont think people should be put off by his numbers. He's still an intriguing prospect.

Slaney will never amount to more than an AHL guy. He was tossed in by the Leafs a while ago and he's tossed in now. I really don't know why they (Poile and Gauthier) even bothered.

I think the Habs did pretty well in this deal

Yeah, but Geoffrion still has upside, and Gill... well you get a role player out of Gill. I have always thought he was over rated.

Considering this does NOTHING to help Nashville's real problem now... There will have to be another deal to make this not a stupid move in my book.

I don't know about that. They're only 5 points out and they had a log jam on D.

Yeah, I suppose. I think it would be a ONLY a little bit like if we traded Stuart because he is UFA and we could plug in someone else like Smith. It doesn't show confidence that they can win it.

Gill's a pylon but he's a useful guy to have in the playoffs. Huge guys with Cup experience and a love for blocking shots always help in the postseason.

Nashville obviously thinks they can get by without more scoring. And why not? They've managed to get by without it for as long as I can remember. I'm a bit surprised they didn't try to work andrei kostitsyn into the deal. He's unhappy in Montreal right now and as you said-- they could use the scoring up front.

Plus he owns a sweet looking powder blue top hat.

If we're going to pick apart the still-warm corpse of the Blue Jackets what do you guys think about Fedor Tyutin? He's big, experienced, and reasonably productive considering the circumstances. The only problem is: starting next season he's signed for six years at 4.5 mil with a modified NTC (assuming the NTC applies after a trade... it could be similar to Carter's clause and phase out if he's traded before the start of the contract).

He'd be an upgrade on Stuart defensively but I haven't really seen him play enough to know much more than that. His +/- is s*** but it's hard to judge that when he's playing on the league's worst team.

Someone should tell the Preds GM that winning the Cup doesn't automatically mean you're a good player...see under Brett Lebda

The Preds GM saw Brett Lebda's Cup denting ass recently-- when acquired him from the Leafs and promptly waived him.

Wonder y these teams can offer up very little and get decent people in return. Grossman for a second round pick was a steal for Philly. Hopefully we can pffer our second rd pick and pull a sniper out the hat. Pfft. Probably not

Because other teams son't like to do the Wings any favors. They are all jealous and would screw the Wings in a lopsided trade demand and then accept less from another team for the same player(s). That is why there is NO WAY Detroit will get Nash. Columbus will demand Zetterberg or Franzen in return (if not both) and then accept decent prospects and draft picks from Toronto or San Jose et al.

Sorry to everyone for not starting my annual trade deadline thread yet. My family and I just got back from Vacation a couple days ago and I've been playing catch-up ever since. I'll start one shortly and continue to update the initial post with all trades since the start of the new year through the end of the trade deadline a week from Monday.

No doubt. Yea getting Nash would cost us huge. Probably four of our best prospects with a first rd pick.
