I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but if he has enlargement of his spleen, wouldn't he have to sit out for 12-18 months until his spleen returns to normal? I couldn't imagine any doctors clearing anyone to play any contact sport, especially at the NHL level, with an enlarged spleen.

Lordy, I hope the spleen is not enraged.

I don't recall hearing that his spleen was enlarged.  Is there a source?  While it's possible to have an enlarged spleen with mono, it's certainly not expected.  When it does happen though, I believe it's 4-6 weeks from the time of diagnosis that he'd be out.  Given that he'll already be out for a month it wouldn't really make a huge difference.

Mono can get pretty intense...I got it my junior year of high school ,had the 6 week Mono bug and it attacked my spleen and tonsils. Doctors told me I was lucky to still have my tosils as they offset the damge to spleen. I was quarantined at my house for 6 weeks and ended up missing 11 weeks of school. Honestly, if he indeed has the 6 wek strain and its already hitting his spleen I would be suprised as hell if hes back in 2 months. The toll it takes on ur body is incredible, I lost 37 lbs and would sleep for 24 hours and basically lived off iv and chicken soup. It was hell

Yeah, when my wife had it, she was utterly wiped out for a year, sleeping 18 hours a day, and she wasn't 100% for another couple of years after that, she would just fall asleep at the drop of a hat.

Bertuzzi actually did have mono, but upon hearing exactly whom they infected, the virus promptly vacated the premises.
