rrasco 1,312 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 After the whole Cowen/Datsyuk thing being completely overlooked, Cowen earns himself a hearing for this hit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtStgXA5wS8 Ottawa Senators defenseman Jared Cowen will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety Wednesday for a hit on Buffalo Sabres center Zemgus Girgensons Tuesday night at First Niagara Center. At 18:02 of the third period, Cowen came across the ice to hit Girgensons as he entered the Ottawa zone. No penalty was called on the play. Girgensons remained in the game. The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=695454
dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 This is such a makeup suspension for the datsyuk hit. This wasn't nearly as bad in my eyes. Girgensons managed to keep himself up after the hit even - indicating he didn't get rung too bad.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 It's hard to tell exactly what happened from that angle. If it was another chickenwing elbow then he absolutely should be suspended. Hopefully twice as long as normal because it'd be the second time in very few games that he's thrown and elbow to catch a guy he missed with a check. Either way it looks like head contact with almost no body contact. Not brutal as far as headshots go, but suspension worthy.

b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Looks to me like he aimed higher than need be and caught him good in the head. Perfect example of how the mechanics of the hit and the result are sometimes at odds, and thus why the Department of Player Safety needs to get much better at weeding out hits based on action not outcome. I'm not saying to disregard injuries when deciding on the severity of a punishment; I'm saying that the lack of an injury shouldn't equate to a lack of punishment. 1 esteef reacted to this
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Should I say it? Should I say it? Well, at least he is going to be disciplined for something
BottleOfSmoke 5,965 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) Well, when DPS puts out their suspension explanation video, it damn well better be Shanahan saying "P.S. We f***ed up not suspending this ****** for clapping Pavel Effing Datsyuk in the jaw and throwing him out of the mix for 7 games because we didn't have TIME (whine) to DETERMINE (whine) that anyone was actually HURT (whine) on the play, so we're gonna play make-upsies on this one, kay?" Edit: a girl can dream... @cotsonika: @NHLPlayerSafety: Jared Cowen suspension video: http://t.co/qP2lF6jlSn Two games.
