Mike Green

per Jim Matheson, via David Staples

“What are the odds of Washington Capitals defenceman Mike Green, once a Norris Trophy finalist, being traded at the entry draft or early this summer? I’d say 75-25. … The problem with Green is he can’t stay healthy. He’s had concussion and groin issues as teams keyed on him and pounded him routinely. … If he can get a defensively strong partner, he can be an asset, though. I can see the Tampa Bay Lightning, who are badly in need of a puck-mover, taking a shot at him. Maybe Florida, which has salary-cap room, or even the Detroit Red Wings, who do not have any right-handed shooting D-men. The Philadelphia Flyers certainly need an offensive defenceman, too, although would Washington trade with a division rival?”

This is from an article by the Edmonton Journal.

I always liked Green and would love to see him in the winged wheel. Everybody keeps talking about how the Wings need a right handed, puck moving, PP QB defenceman and Green could easily be that guy. He has had injury problems recently but he is being asked to be "the guy" in Washington whereas, in Detroit, he could be a complimentary piece to a pretty descent group of defenceman. He in an offensive-defenceman that could really help spark the Wings goal scoring. I mean, he didn't get the nickname "game-over-Green" for being bad at video games after all. What's everyone's thoughts on him? What do you think he would cost?

You know how bad everyone says Smith, Lashoff, and Kindl are defensively? Green is worse.

The difference is, Green can produce. That's where his value lies.

As for his cap hit and health, $6M isn't all that bad, and he's only got one year left on his contract. If he bombs, move him at the deadline, or part ways in the summer.

No chance the wings would take him. It would be like Carlo Colaiacovo all over again.

Colaiacovo's a depth defenseman, and we threw him onto a makeshift, hope-and-pray blue line. Green, at his best, is a top-end talent, a difference-maker. A defensive black hole, yes, but the guy can move the puck and score, especially on the power play. Outside of Kronwall and maaaaaaybe Smith, we don't have a guy like that on the back end, and that's a big, big issue. Maybe one of our kids becomes as valuable as Green, but that's a huge maybe, and Datsyuk would be gone by then anyway.

If we're going to acquire a top-end, difference-making top-four defenseman, it's very likely going to be someone who's a good deal less than ideal. Otherwise, we wouldn't have a shot at him in the first place. Ideal players don't get moved or allowed to hit the UFA market.

I'd like Green at a reasonable price.

I actually wouldn't hate Green at the right price, either. I assume the Caps will try to get all they can for him, though. But I think pairing him with the right guy (DK or Ericsson) would work out nicely. He's a heck of a PP guy, and right handed - something this team needs right now. He would be better than Boyle, no doubt... it's just a matter of which assets Washington would want in return.

If there's one team we could really help, it's probably the Caps. They lack quality veteran leadership. They need a few good two-way forwards. (This piece touches on it.) I think we have a number of assets that would suit them well (e.g. Andersson). What they might lose in firepower, they'd make up for in better two-way play.

The issue is, they're going to want an NHL defenseman, and that's just a starting point. I wouldn't move Smith for possibly only one season of Green. Maybe they like Kindl, but then we'd probably have to go big on the forward and/or the prospect(s), since we'd obviously be skimping on the defenseman. Green's their one big tradable asset and he's part of their core, and their lethal power play (the only reason they have any success these days). So they'd likely want quite a bit.

Defensemen who are worse in their own end than most forwards are a liability unless they're putting up 80+ points. Green is horrible unless you're going to play him limited even strength minutes and use him as a PP specialist. I'd rather use Sproul for that, at least he has upside.

Eh I think he'd be ok with 2nd line duties and a strong Stuart, Ericsson, or DeKeyser pairing
