Joe Hicketts

I just wanted to show a little appreciation for Joe Hicketts, who we signed as a free agent last month (September 24th). He is extremely undersized at 5'8" 185lbs. so he may never make it to the NHL and he may be another Adam Almquist, very smart player, but can't put it all together because of a lack of stature...

Anyway, he is currently playing his third season in the WHL for the Victoria Royals and is second in points for defenseman with 15 (4-11) points in his first 11 games.

Also, an interested article...

Saw this article. They don't mention any names, but it's pretty easy to guess. The Wings only have 2 prospects from B.C. and the other is a Ferrarro.

Hope it doesn't get in the way of his development since he impressed in camp.

Joe Hicketts (Victoria Royals, Detroit Red Wings) – Hicketts may be undersized but no one has told him. After going undrafted in the past draft, Joe Hicketts received camp invites to both Montreal and Detroit. Hoping to impress after missing the majority of his draft year with injury, Hicketts did exactly that earning a contract with the Red Wings. Hicketts is short in stature but he is a full-bodied defender who owns a rocket of a point shot and the willingness to lay bone-crushing checks. He led the WHL team in points scoring one goal and picking up an assist in two Subway Series games. In the WHL, Hicketts sits first among all defensemen with 28 points in 21 games. Yup, get him on your fantasy hockey radar.

Victoria's Joe Hicketts is the only defenceman invited to this camp who wasn't invited to the summer camp. At 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, he's not blessed with extraordinary size or speed, and the 1996-born blueliner wasn't drafted by an NHL team last summer.

But after attending Detroit's summer prospect camp, and then getting invited to the Wings' rookie tournament team in Traverse City, the undrafted free agent sufficiently impressed the Wings to get an NHL contract. He's been an offensive dynamo in the WHL this season.

With seven goals and 36 points in 28 games, he leads all WHL defencemen in scoring, but he's fifth amongst all players in the WHL. It doesn't hurt that Lowry, who will handle the defencemen for Groulx, is Hicketts' head coach in Victoria.

For a defenceman of that stature in the WJC, Hicketts doesn't have the same dynamic qualities to his game as, say, Ryan Ellis in 2009 and 2010, but he has a scrappy get-things-done mentality and puts up points.
