e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 Oh man. Have never been to an Isles vs. Rags game in the 10+ years I've lived here in NYC, but these two teams are going at it. I gotta get to a game. Isles have been schooling the Rags all season long. Tavares scored :12 into the game. Goals been traded back and forth with the Isles holding the lead or quickly re-gaining the lead for most of the game. It's now tied 5 - 5 out on the Island. St. Louis (who's been snakebit for a while) just got the tying goal. Less than 10 minutes left.

pondrocket 35 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 http://www.startribune.com/sports/wild/292138431.html Nice night for Nestrasil. Good thing we were able to hang on to Cleary instead of a 200 lb kid with some ability. Thanx Holland!
krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 Yup, Nestrasil is a huge loss... Back when Holland waived Nestrasil, I thought it was the right move... I mean how was anyone supposed to know that this kid was going to turn into a superstar power forward in just a few short months... He could be the missing piece we need for a solid playoff run... Maybe we can trade with Carolina to get him back here... Tatar is probably too undersized though, no way he gets us a 6'2", 210lbs. power forward like Nesty... Oh well... krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 I disagree. I'd rather have Cleary as our 13th/14th forward at practice every day, in the weight room, and teaching the kids how to be a pro, rather than a scrub like Nestrasil. He might be a slight upgrade over Andersson, and even that is questionable. That coming from one of Andersson's biggest critics... Andersson will be the next to be waived, and he will be claimed by another team, and just like Nestrasil (and Leino and Ritola...) will have a decent stretch of games before vanishing off the face of the earth... The Wings players are going to be best served playing against NHL caliber players in practice. Danny is not, or he would be playing. But if his other intangibles are of value bring him into the organization as a coach. Don't WASTE a roster spot. He definately won't be on any roster next year. Holland gave up a young kid with size for nothing. Nobody is saying the Wings are going to vanish off the face of the earth. It is about assets. They will be bounced in the first round though. They are certainly a good team, but not a special team. Edited February 17, 2015 by pondrocket

In other news: Players that move on from the Wings often time play some decent games for the team they're playing for now. It happens. ...but when you're speaking of asset management, you have to pick and choose. Not every player needs to stay. Not every player that gets moved should have gone. If there's a team in this league that knows about asset management it's this one. Let's not get confused. We haven't had any major botches... such as trading away a Filip Forsberg type player since... well... I can't quite recall. Anyone? krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) Nor did I say that anyone said that the Wings are going to vanish off the face of the earth, I was referring to Nestrasil. You think just because he's on a bit of a hot streak right now that he is a good player? He is a marginal NHL player, playing on a terrible team, of course he's going to put up a few points. He had no place with the Red Wings, that is why he was waived... Cleary provides more to the team as a healthy scratch than Nestrasil ever had or ever would have. The roster spot is not being wasted because even if it were Nestrasil as the 13th/14th forward, chances are if there were any injuries, management would opt to call-up Pulkkinen rather than putting Nestrasil in the lineup. He's in Carolina now, get over it... I'm sure you will when he inevitably falls to mediocrity... Edited February 17, 2015 by krsmith17
pondrocket 35 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) The catalyst to my comment was not that Nestrasil is going to be great or that Clearey is bad. It is about assets. Right now the team needs to add assets to transition from a really good team to a special team. Complicating factors are a struggle to attract FA's the last few years and having enough of the right assets to trade for another without shedding something we are really going to need. As great as the Wings are at the draft (is there anybody equil or better?) it is almost imposible to have a team of special players mature at the same time. How does Holland supliment his great home grown team? Assets. My point was he was at least an asset & Clearey is less of an asset as he does not play, he has no trade value & he consumes unreasonable cap space. krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 So... we should have held onto Nestrasil despite him being a marginal NHL player because he is "more of an asset than Dan Cleary"... Okay then... Nestrasil wouldn't garner any more interest in a trade than a 7th round draft pick... We waived him, it was the right move at the time, and in hindsight... it was still the right move... 1 e_prime reacted to this

The only bad trade I can even think of in my life is Adam Oates and Paul MacLean to the St. Louis Blues for Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney. Can't blame Holland for that but it was on Jimmy D's watch. Pretty enviable stat, considering the decades I go back to recall that one.

If you think letting a 500,000.00 player with youth, size and might actually play in the NHL go is smarter than not signing Clearey for 2,000,000.00 and tying up a roster spot well .... you have to be Danny's mom. krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 17, 2015 Thanks, I love Cleary, but that has nothing to do with my bias in this situation. This isn't even about Cleary. I know he's done all he can do in this league, and he will in all likelihood hang them up after this season. This is about Nestrasil and how he is not in any way, shape or form a great hockey player. The right decision was made when he was waived...

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted February 18, 2015 Too too started the game tonight on a line with zajac vs buffalo. I missed most of the game since I was sitting in the waiting room after taking in a friend with a migraine, but I have watched quite a bit of Devils hockey this year. Tootoo looks like more than just a pair of fists with them. Granted, they're not the best team in the league, but he doesn't look out of place with the likes of Elias, Jagr, et al. In the final minutes of tonight's game, he had one play that was pretty awesome. Nothing came of it, but it looked good.
