toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 5, 2016 Crosby actually did come close to outscoring the next best by a pretty high percentage for a short time....but I agree....forget era, Gretzky did it pretty much every year.
DatsyukianDekes 2,428 Report post Posted March 5, 2016 I didn't make it that far, and I wasn't responding directly to Bill but more of a general statement on what frequently comes up when discussing Gretzky. I saw "lolzorz dumb argument" (creative license taken as to how it was heard in my head) and posted. Saying something is dumb and not contributing to the discussion as to *why* it's dumb is a pet peeve of mine. You call a spade a spade. It's truly a dumb thing to say, and he had no substance to back up his argument. If you read further on in the thread its clearly described by me why it's dumb as if it wasn't obvious by every other post in the thread by others. Gretzky is the best and will remain the best Hockey player that ever played. He had talents no one else has possessed and he wasn't just good because of an era in which he played hockey. Give Gretzky all the technology in sticks now days and the nutrition and supplements these guys take and who knows what he could do today. What we do know is that he saw the game the way no one has or ever will. And that will never be replicated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bill Berzeench 310 Report post Posted March 5, 2016 I don't believe for a second you think this lol, you clearly are trying to get a reaction. From a person who thinks 28 is over the hill, you are now saying that a 30 year old is going to get 484 goals between the age of 30-40. That's 48.4 goals per year, for the next 10 years straight. At least keep your trolling believable I truly do believe Ovi will get 1,000 goals. That's 35 for the next 15 years. To me, it's not a stretch at all to believe he will play til he's 45. And with Jagr scoring 25 goals a season in his 40's, it's also not a stretch to me to think Ovi could average 45 over the next 4 years, 40 the next 4 years, 35, the next 4 years, and 30 the next 4 years. Jagr's a fitness freak though, right? Yah, he's 6'3, 235. You know who else is 6'3", 235? Ovechkin. I actually have a hard time believing Ovi wont blow by Gretzky. I don't believe you, you're trying to get a reaction. Just like in another thread where you equate Tatar & Glendenning to Toews & Hossa. You are making ridiculous arguments to get people to engage with you but most people dont bite anymore because they all know you are trolling so you keep getting more extreme. When you say things like Toews is better then Datsyuk its somewhat believable, but Ovie getting 1000+ goals, you've jumped the shark. 1 DatsyukianDekes reacted to this

Can you do me a favor and just ignore me? Or don't respond to me? Pretend I'm not talking to you, because REALLY, I AM NOT TALKING TO YOU.Ovechkin is going to have 525 goals at the end of this season and be 31 years old. Jagr is 44 years old and still playing. Chelios was 48 when he stopped playing. Howe, 51. Ovechkin is averaging 50 goals a season the last 3 years, and the ownership of his team has built a strong supporting cast. It is completely reasonable to believe Ovechkin could average 45 goals per year over the next 6 years. That puts him at 800 at age 37. Scoring 200 more goals by the time he retires shouldnt be out of reach. I truly believe you'd have to be VERY pessimistic to not think he could be the first 1000 goal scorer. Find one other post of mine where I call someone else a troll, there is not a single other person on this board that I have every said that to. On the contrary, I can find many other posts from other posters calling you a troll. Stop trolling, and I will stop calling you a troll. Ovie has scored 516 goals in 822 games. If he plays 10 more seasons which is another 820 games he would need to score more 486 goals. From age 20-30 his scoring rate has been .62 GPG. For him to hit 486 more goals, he would need to have a rate of .59 GPG for the next 10 years. That is way to small of a drop for someone as they approach their 40's as per every NHL player ever. There is no way he hits 1000 goals. Edited March 6, 2016 by kliq 1 DatsyukianDekes reacted to this

If he plays 16 more years, he needs to average 30 goals a year to get to 1,000. The guy is in his prime right now and his team is really good. 800 goals by age 37 is extremely realistic. kickazz 5,459 Report post Posted March 7, 2016 (edited) Bill...just by comparison, Gretzky had 749 goals by the time he was 31. So what you're saying is he only scored 145 goals from age 31 to age 38 (when he retired) Heh wonder if Ovie would decline that hard. My opinion is that if there's a lot of perfect scenarios for Ovie he can break the record. 1. They reduce goalie pad size or make nets bigger 2. Ovie stays as healthy as he is for the next 14 years. 3. The Caps continue to be a good team 4. There isnt another lockout 5. Even if Ovie is healthy the next 14 years he doesn't lose his goal scoring touch (at least not significantly) Lots of things needed for him to break it. It's not impossible. But probability is another question. Edited March 7, 2016 by kickazz
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 7, 2016 Gretzky was hit from behind into the boards by Gary Suter, during the Canada Cup, just prior to the 91-92 season (right around turning 31). He injured his back and missed half the year....was never the same player again. He put up decent numbers, but was clearly not the same. So, he probably declined faster than normal as injury and age combined to speed up decline. However, that's the thing, injuries are typically more likely as you age as well. Bill Berzeench 310 Report post Posted March 7, 2016 Ovi is a mountain. Injuries could happen, but I wouldnt count on it.
Bannedforlife 403 Report post Posted March 8, 2016 I would root for OV to break Gretzky's goal record. But i wouldnt bet on it.
chaps80 1,591 Report post Posted March 13, 2016 It's an impressive accomplishment, for sure. Funny, but I've never thought of Messier or Francis as five of the best scorers ever, even thought I know they rank that way. Yeah, same with Mike Gardiner. The guy has over 700 career goals and is never talked about with the big guns.
