#2536638 Barry Trotz Wants Ovechkin to be more like Yzerman

Posted by Adidarw on 20 September 2014 - 07:53 AM

Full article: http://www.thehockey...oaches-say-yes/

This is an article about Ovechkin. At the end, there is a bit about Trotz "fixing" Ovechkin. He notes Scotty Bowman turning Yzerman from a pure-offensive guy into a two-way player. Trotz wants to do the same to Ovechkin.

HOW CAN BARRY TROTZ FIX HIM? (Ovechkin)

Washington fired Oates and GM George McPhee, but owner Ted Leonsis’ intent was not to blow up the franchise. He’s reloading with Trotz and wants to keep building around Ovechkin.

“If I said to you, ‘Hey, I know how to fix him, 100 percent,’ I would probably be lying,” Trotz says. “I have an idea of how I would go about trying, and I believe in that method, and there has to be a little bit of a give and take on both sides.”

How will Trotz, known for hardworking, stingy teams during his 15-year run with the Nashville Predators, get through to Ovechkin, for whom the ice is permanently tilted toward the opposing goal?

Two words: Steve Yzerman.

Trotz cites the Hall of Fame pivot as proof that a pure offensive weapon can be transitioned into a two-way monster. Remember Yzerman’s early relationship with Scotty Bowman in Detroit? When Bowman called him out for not paying attention to defense, and Yzerman surfaced in trade rumors? Us neither. Yzerman responded so well that it’s easy to forget he wasn’t always known for two-way play. In Trotz’s eyes, that means Ovechkin isn’t a lost cause.

“Yzerman gave some of himself up on the offensive side of the puck to become a top talent on both sides of the puck, and they started winning championships,” Trotz says.

At the same time, Ovechkin will never be Yzerman. That’s not an insult. The two players have different strengths, and while Ovie can become more diligent in defensive zone coverage, he’s best used as an offensive weapon.

“He got 51 goals last year, and I’d love for him to get 52,” Trotz says. “But not at the expense of the other side of the puck.”

Trotz is as optimistic as any new coach should be and, if the testimony of people from Ovechkin’s past is to be believed, there may just be a special bond in the making here. Boudreau and Hanlon have incentive to pull punches, but Ovechkin’s retired teammates don’t, so it’s telling that they’re so supportive. Now, it’s Ovie’s turn to reward their faith and transition from boy to man in the NHL.

“I can reassure Barry that Alex is a great person that enjoys hockey and is driven to win the Cup,” Hanlon says. “Anything less will not satisfy him. He is one of the most enjoyable players I have coached. Form your own opinions on what you see on the ice. Any other opinions mean nothing.”

#2449034 NHL Goal Light

Posted by Adidarw on 30 October 2013 - 10:34 PM

This is something I've kind of always wondered. Does the goal light automatically light up when the puck goes in the net? If not, what technically makes it light up?

All I can find about the goal light on Google is sites that sell goal lights.

I'd prefer a link to a page that explains it, if anyone knows of one.

#2422722 Best 4th Overall Pick in NHL History: Steve Yzerman

Posted by Adidarw on 27 June 2013 - 12:06 PM

http://www.nhl.com/i...id=nhl:topheads

Drafting is one part skill and one part luck. And sometimes bad luck can turn out to be the best kind.

The Detroit Red Wings had the fourth pick at the 1983 NHL Draft and targeted local prospect Pat LaFontaine. But when LaFontaine was taken by the New York Islanders with the third pick, the Red Wings had to settle for their second choice.

That player was a talented but smallish center who worked out OK. Detroit might not have gotten the player it wanted, but by the timeSteve Yzerman retired 23 years later, the Red Wings wouldn't have changed a thing about how that day went.

NHL.com's Dream Draft panel has named Yzerman as the best No. 4 first-round pick.

#2379272 Official NHL Trade Deadline thread

Posted by Adidarw on 03 April 2013 - 11:30 AM

Are you aware that nobody is doing anything? There has been one trade thus far today, and it was Maxime Sauve for Rob Flick. Do you know whom either of those guys are? Yep, neither do I.

In light of this, I don't know why you're calling Holland's lack of movement crazy.

Some of us are excited that the trade deadline is less than 3 hours away.  Let us be excited and giddy.

Is it possible to puke in you're mouth more than 3 times ? ....

Yeah, wait until somebody interviews Crosby to see what he has to say.  That'll be the 4th time.

#2373492 Iginla may/may not have added Detroit to his trade list

Posted by Adidarw on 24 March 2013 - 10:22 PM

So, Detroit wasn't on the list.. but now Detroit has been added.  In my mind, this makes me think Detroit is pushing hard for him but Detroit wasn't on the list... but Calgary sees a deal they like... so they had a talk with Iginla, who in turn was like "ok... I can do that"

That's just what I'm thinking :)

#2355390 Babcock: Is he the right guy going forward?

Posted by Adidarw on 14 February 2013 - 05:58 AM

The Wings had a rough start.  However, they have been inching their way to the top of the standings.  They have shown an immense amount of improvement.  Babcock is an excellent coach and there is no reason to believe we should find someone else to take his job.

Did we forget about all the injuries we have right now?  For how bad we started and how we IMPROVED so much to get where we're at in the standings now without several key players is motivating.

I don't find it shocking at all that this topic came after a loss.
