I agree. You'd think Brunner would be enough, but apparently we need to have two or three new, young, stars before people are happy. Honestly I'd rather be winning, regardless of who's playing. And to do that we're going to need veterans to get healthy, and an upgrade on the top defensive pairing. What we definitely don't need is another small(ish) playmaking forward.
Winning is all that matters for sure.
And to your second point, absent of an acquisition, my hope is that once Smith gets back Ian White will move to the 3rd line where he belongs (i.e. where every other team that has had him in the past has played him at). But that is a different argument.
Maybe it's more about him than it is our lineup. Maybe the front office sees something you don't. This is totally new toy syndrome. Because how often do we ever get a player from the AHL and think he could've been better if he were called up sooner? I can't think of any examples. Either the player comes up and is what we thought he'd be, or he's a disappointment in the way that time in the AHL had nothing to do with it.
I think part of it is that this fanbase wants to see more young top talent. Tatar is definitely a start.
The Wings' fanbase wants to see a Jordan Eberle, or a Sean Couturier, etc.
We want to see impactful young guys. Obviously they aren't a dime-a-dozen, but we WANT!
In my limited time observing Nyq, and with my even more limited evaluation skills, it seems to me that Tatar is much harder on the puck than Nyq.
That would be one reason Tatar is up now and Nyq is not.
Another reason could be that Holland & Co. feel like they know what they have in Nyq but needed to see Tatar in action at this level, thinking he could be effective, but wanting to see it. And IMO, has proven more effective due to his agressiveness after the puck.
All that babble being said, I do think Nyq could easily have scored the goals Cleary scored, and a few more that Cleary let go through his skates etc.
Babcock seems to want a good shut down line that also scores with Pavs line, and maybe is afraid Nyq wouldn't be shut down capable.
With your experience watching Nyq, do you think coul be an accurate assessment?
In my opinion, that alone is why Tatar is with the club right now.
He didn't have that in seasons past. He is a hound out there right now. Scrap to go along with his offensive skill.
I hate them as much as the next guy. Even as they underachieved the last couple of seasons, they ALWAYS brought their A+ game when they played the Wings. Crawford always seems to play like Patrick Roy when they play us...
But is anyone really that surprised as to how well they are playing right now? In my opinion, they have the deepest forward set in the entire league and I don't think it is really that close.
Elite: Toews, Sharp, Hossa, Kane. I think that is the best top 4 in hockey.
Secondary: Bolland, Frolik, Stalberg. Frolik is an underachiever, but I think for a secondary spot he is a nice get. I'm pretty sure I would take Bolland over Filppula.
Bottom: Bickell, Shaw, Kruger, Saad. Excellent mix of youth and size. Bickell can get you at least 10 and I've liked what I've seen from the other three.
They have a top 5 d-man (Keith) a top 15 d-man (Seabrook) and another solid one (Hjalmarsson). And I think that Crawford is a lot better than people want to admit.
I was just thinking this as they have put this pretty incredible run together. To me, it is not all that surprising.
Hmmm.... So because our old guys are hurt-who hired them? We lost. Not because of the "great" young talent from GR. odd. we just played a game with all of our talent from GR and got smoked. Some have been beging for the young guys to come up and play more, and the old broken down to play less. well you are getting what you asked for. not pretty at all. This will ghet worse before it gets better. A lot worse. I hope some player changes are made very soon!
This is really just a poorly worded response that doesn't seem to have a point or go anywhere.....
Thank you Dan Cleary for all of those clutch playoff goals you have provided in the past, but injuries have caught up with you. You can't skate and you never get an opportunity to shoot.
Here is a positive: Cleary/Bert/White all have expiring contracts
