#2448392 Vanek Traded To Islanders

Posted by Richdg on 27 October 2013 - 08:01 PM

Exactly where would he have located $7.2m of cap space?

True we have no cap room today, but what about last summer? before we pissed away 5.5 million of Alfie, 5 million on Weiss, and didn't use our second buyout on say Franzen? that is 15 million right there! Not to mention the 1.75 million on cleary. we could have traded for both Ryan and vanek and had to good scoring lines! but no......

Compete level. wasn't that the excuse for not getting Ryan? Who btw has 5 goals in 8+ games, is 26, RHed, makes 5.2 million and has 1 year after this on his contract. Versus Alfie, Cleary, tatar, and Nyquist who combined have 2 goals and cost us about 8.5 million this year.

I am not one that thinks Holland makes a lot of mistakes, but this is a big one. We are a scoring challenged team, and Ryan puts in 30+ every full year.

It's time to get over the whole heart and effort bit with Franzen.  Like Fedorov and others, Franzen looks like a world beater one night and is invisible the next.  Always been that way, always will be that way.  But at the end of the season, he's going to have 30 or so goals like always.  Move on to something else.

Nope. he has scored 30 or more goals one time in his now 10 year career. he 82 game average is about 26/27 goals. of course he doesn't play 82 games in a year.

Yes he is awesome. I thought before the season that there was a good chance that Kindl and dekeyser would be the top pair over Kronwall and E. Dekeyser has shown he is one of the best on the team. maybe the best defensively so far this season. If he ever gets to the 40+ point range offensively he will win many Norris Trophies. Future captain as well.

#2442660 Steve Yzerman wants Game Misconduct penalties for fighting

Posted by Richdg on 08 October 2013 - 12:04 PM

Sorry Stevie but I disagree. fact is you spent a good portion of your career-nearly all being protected by guys like Probert, Kocur, McCarty, Shanny, etc....... You had 1 career fight, lost badly, and were smart enough to never do it again, which counters your argument. no one has to fight. But most star players are glad there are guys that do.

Some of us remember that wonderful evening back in 1997 when the RW finally became a champion. No it wasn't a 5 goal night from federov or stevie, it wasn't the night we finally lifted the cup over our heads, it was a couple of months earlier than that, at the Joe vs the Avs in March. Every RW fan under 30 knows that night. But most can't tell you who won the game, or what the final score was. But everyone remembers the night of the turtle. Everyone remembers Mccarty redeeming his best friends honor. Everyone remembers Shanny clocking Roy, and then letting Vernon pummel Roy. BTW the final score was 6-5 RW's, with McCarty scoring the game winner-something he wouldn't be allowed to do if Stevie had his way. Same guy scored the Cup winning goal a few months later.

#2442655 Will young talent ever speak out against Wings philosophy?

Posted by Richdg on 08 October 2013 - 11:40 AM

Are you advocating hurting your own teammate in practice to get ahead?  How very "Black Swan" of you.  I'd hate to be your coworker, god knows what you'd do for a better parking spot.

Yes. That is what young players are supposed to do: earn a roster spot/playing time. Which as of today nyquist and Tatar haven't. maybe it is do to blind loyalty or maybe it is because they are not as good as the vets some fans want them to replace.

Yes waiting for your chance is hard to do. Then do something about it. As Ric Flair used to say "To be the man, you have to beat the man". There is a lot of trueth in that statement.

Isn't that what we are doing now?

I agree, right now we have Danny D and Tatar in then line up and Nyquist will be up as soon as a spot opens.

At the end of this year there are a bunch of contracts ending. (Sammy, Bert, Alferdsson, Cleary, Eaves).

That opens up spots to be earned, adds the much needed cap space. These guys will get there spots.

Why mess with the formula that made Detroit the most successful franchise in all of sports.

What made the RW the most successful isn't overriping players in the minors. It was a great draft-1983, several big time trades, multiple UFA signings, and scouting Europe before everyone else did. All the while being backed by the best owner in sports. The overriping of young talent is a by product of having a deep and talented team. Not the cause of having a deep and talented team.

#2442522 Laviolette out in Philly

Posted by Richdg on 07 October 2013 - 11:24 AM

While the Flyers are a bad team, that is on the GM not the coach. But GM's don't fire themselves.

This is an awful move, but one that has to be done by any GM in this situation because otherwise they lose their job. Pete was NOT to blame for this team's failures... he simply wasn't given ANYTHING to work with. He had awful goaltending the entire time, and lost Pronger and a few other key guys on defense, hence their team being awful defensively. Add to that, losing Jagr hurt them, trading away Richards and Carter was a stupid move. Holgrem has to go, he is the problem.

Yup. maybe out of panic we can get them to trade us Simmons...... One can only dream.......

Yes! Hockey is back! Tatar will only sit one game. The chances that both bert and Sammy make it through tonights games injury free are so small, not worth mentioning.

#2439939 Mantha is crushing the Q, 4 goals and an assist tonight

Posted by Richdg on 30 September 2013 - 10:57 AM

I'm not down on this kid at all, but lets wait till he's at least played in the NHL before we decide if he's a good pick or not, eh?

No that is not what the draft is about. You have a good draft when you pick talented young players. How they turn out down the road is another story all together. This was a great pick for us in this draft.

BTW Vol already has Mantha listed as 6-5/206. So yes he is growing. Yes I understand EVERYONE lies about how big guys really are. But he was listed as 6-3/190 on most draft sites, IIRC the RW site has him as 6-4/190, but now his Junior team lists him as bigger. This is a good thing.

Nastasiuk is also off to a good start with Owen Sound. 2 G and 2 A in 4 games so far. He has also grown. Listed as 6-2/196.

#2439156 Brendan Smith

Posted by Richdg on 26 September 2013 - 12:30 PM

Smith is learning to play the game. Most if not all young D struggle at the beginning of their careers. The NHL is a very different animal than minor/junior/college hockey. Even Nicky took a year or 2 to fully adjust to the NHL game.

#2431299 It's time - to predict 2014 Team USA

Posted by Richdg on 23 July 2013 - 04:15 PM

Of course this will change based on who is healthy and playing well next winter. As for G's Miller will be 3rd. Quick/Howard will be the starter based on who is playing better at the time.

IIRC Ryan, Backus, and Brown were on a line together and played really well.

#2428248 Wings Attempting to Re-sign Cleary

Posted by Richdg on 06 July 2013 - 09:37 PM

Maybe Holland should call Nick and Shanny and see if they are ready for one last hurrah! Cleary....I mean clearly we want to oldest team in the NHL. Might as well trade the farm system for nabakov while we are at it. After all the kids are not going to be playing......LOL

#2427405 is anyone happy right now?

Posted by Richdg on 05 July 2013 - 03:48 PM

Clarkson will score 90 goals for the ML. Ryan will be soft as hell and disappear for big games. And Detroit will have a glut of young players on entry level and second contracts giving them a lot of room to make moves in the near future.

Because we do so much of that! passing on Ryan for example. Nyquist and tatar will be lucky to score as many goals per season COMBINED as what Ryan does. he is a proven 30-35 goal per year guy.

Vinny LeCav to expensive. Signs with Philly for 4.5 million per year. Weiss sign with us for 4.9 million per year. over the last 4 years Vinny has produced 205 points in the regular season and Weiss produced 170. We are paying more money for LESS PRODUCTION!

Alfie-signs for 5.5 million. Clarkson signs for 5.2 million. Who is the better bet to score 30 goals in 2013/14? How about 14/15? 15/16? Again, more money for less production!

But next year we have a ton of money available. True. To spend on what? more over 35 forwards? That is our recent history. Pass on the big names-the few that make it and blow our money on nothing.

#2425379 Red Wings won't pursue David Clarkson

Posted by Richdg on 03 July 2013 - 11:49 AM

Ok, a writer writes a story saying we will not go after........ pick a name. There are no quotes from anyone in the RW's management. She ass-u-mes that because of a stated price or a stated destination that we are automaticly out. Didn't Vinny say he wanted 5 million? And that he wanted to go to a city that is not a hockey hot bed? yet he signs with Philly for 4.5 million. lets not get ahead of ourselves here. I have no idea how things will work, but public wants and actual contracts are very different things. Every agent for every UFA is going to try to drive up the price-that is his/her job. Every GM is going to be coy and try to drive down the prices-that is his job.

Point is-relax and enjoy the ride. UFA is always a gamble. Sometimes you win sometimes you crap out.

I'm glad a couple people agree with me. One 30 goal season doesn't make him a superstar

Same number of 30 goal seasons as franzen, in half the time. if you don't look at a players total career you can be mislead. For his first couple of seasons, Clarkson was on checking lines. 2 years ago he moved up to the top line and scores 30. This year he had 15-which would have been tied with datsyuk for our team lead. He is also a league hit leader and will protect his team mates.
