#2319714 Red Wings make "helluva" offer for Nash, no response

Posted by CrimsonFlame on 18 July 2012 - 10:21 AM

Not really a surprised. Trading your franchise player to a division rival doesn't exactly happen very often.

As I said before, hockey strategy aside it's just bad marketing. If you think Columbus fans are unhappy with the team now, imagine how they'd feel if they traded Nash to the Wings. There'd be a riot.

Of what, all 200 of them?

I hope our penalty kill is good though.

Between him and Bertuzzi we'll have tons of reputation calls.

Only thing I'm not looking forward to with Tootoo well assuming suspensions aren't going to be an issue.

For his style of play and repuation, his PIM numbers are fairly small actually. A good number of those 92 PIMs last year are from fighting and you have to think a lot from roughing as well with another going to the box. Plus when he pisses off the other team he draws a lot of penalties as well.

Of course youre going to get some penalties from this type of player, but when youre getting one of the hardest hitting forwards and one of the toughest pound for pound fighters, that small amount of penalties he takes is worth it in my eyes the next game when he has guys looking over their shoulders and hurrying with the puck

While pondering the idea of not getting anymore D help other than Q once he is awarded a contract, it would be nice to see this kid in Detroit for some games here and there (if it's possible)...he is the next D in line on the prospects list behind Smith and l am pretty impressed with him. His highlight vid looks just as impressive as the Justin Schultz one that everyone has watched...at 19 years old he is 6'3" but only 186lbs. By time he hits 21 I am sure he will weigh more...he is big and a right handed shot...that shot looks pretty impressive from what I see here. I think the Wings D is in good shape, Suter-less and when this kid is ready to be here fulltime, I think he will become a very solid and dominant player...

The fact that the Avalanche did not want him back, even at a low price, is very telling. Whatever the case, the guy would be yet another bottom-six forward with the Wings. He scored 22 goals in one season, yes, but that was five years ago, and he hasn't mustered more than 13 goals in any season since then. I don't know why so many of you are calling him a steal at that price; the guy is not a big scorer.

I would like him a lot more at 1.3.
What do you think of him at 1.9? Coz that's what he got and the title of this thread

Youre that hung up on 600,000 when the wings still need to take on a bunch of salary to even make the cap floor?

Scottie was the man

#2316927 Semin

Posted by F.Michael on 08 July 2012 - 02:52 AM

Semin will come to Detroit, and the season will have a happy ending in June.

I can foresee it.

Semin plays the "bongos" on Sid the Kid's head as a form of celebration just after he scored the OT game 7 winning goal of the Cup Finals?

#2316835 Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr

Posted by herry on 07 July 2012 - 06:51 PM

i'll preface this post with this: i've never played hockey and i don't know much about the intricacies of contracts and all the little details. i'm just a wings fan.

but i love this move. so much so that i'm posting on this board for the first time in years, just because i want to get it off my chest. my wife is pretty much sick of my e mails on the subject by now.

regardless of if we had signed parise or suter, i think i'd still have been more geeked over the tootoo signing. even though he may be nowhere near as technically skilled. i don't think 1.3 million is much at all. not for the bomb that is about to go off at joe louis when he takes the ice. i think his impact will make the 1.3 million seem like a good bargain when it's said and done.

i like it for these reasons.

1. he goes all out all the time. babcock is always whining about "going to the net more" and putting the puck on goal. i think he's gonna get that with tootoo. he's not good enough to be fancy. he goes straight ahead full speed ahead all the time. i think babcock will like him despite himself.

2. he's pretty much fearless. he instantly has a role. the first time somebody runs over hank or datsyuk, everybody's gonna be looking expectantly at tootoo. and he's almost certain to respond. the days of shea webber ramming zetterberg's head into the wall repeatedly with no fear of consequences are over. there will be consequences. he might lose fights, but one thing is certain: he's not backing down. i am looking forward to that. and i think our top stars are gonna appreciate it as well.

3. he's only 27, and his numbers aren't getting worse. at the end of three years, he's still in his prime. 30 points? it's not out of the question. neither is 40 at some point. we're getting a hockey player. not a goon. tootoo can play every shift every game. how many wings games against nashville has he played well against us? somebody besides me must like him. he's been on the same team that drafted him for 8 years. it's not like he was such a jerk that he wore out his welcome. read a predators forum. their fans aren't exactly thrilled he's going to detroit. it's not like, "good riddance!" it's more like, "uh oh."

i realize that tootoo can walk the fine line and go over it. he's not the first guy. he won't be the last. does he leave his feet sometimes? does kronwall? the difference is that when the other teams go berzerk over a tootoo hit, he stands there and states his case. kronwall will skate away. people make more of a few hits than what it is. vladdy was and is one of my favorite wings. he wasn't exactly known around the league as mr. clean.

tootoo is what he is. he's going to play hard. he's gonna give a lot of effort. he's gonna crash into a lot of people. he's going to stand up for his new teammates. i think he's going to blend in just fine for all of those reasons.

i think he adds instant excitement and i can't understand how people don't like this move. i think he's a cheap difference maker. i think he gives the fourth line some umph. i think he gives the whole team some snarl. i think he's going to add more spark than bonfires. in the end, i think his new teammates, and the fans, are going to love him.

he's fearless and he gives max effort. i'll take that. he's youngish. he's tested. the fact that he's sort of the "anti-babcock wing" is a good thing, imo. not a bad thing. i'm tired of seeing the wings get pushed around in the playoffs. tootoo will push back.

#2316609 Sign Jurcina or Vandermeer and call it a day

Posted by stevkrause on 06 July 2012 - 10:23 PM

First off, everyone get off the ledge.

We didn't lose out because we're falling apart, or because Kenny didn't do his job, we didn't get the key FA because THEY chose to play together and WHERE they wanted to play and were going there regardless of what everyone else offered them, or because someone gave them an OBSCENE contract, with way too much term (*cough* Carle *cough*) that they did not deserve, that we do not need killing our team in the short, or long term... especially with a new CBA coming, that could freeze the cap. This is not an eternal ceiling that keeps going up and will continue to go up, nor should it be.

Once the top FA were gone, the market this year falls off... drastically. When this happens, a good team, with a good GM, does not panic and then reach and sign unnecessary contracts, to marginal players, that hurt their team in the short or long term. They stay the course.

Holland is a damn good GM. period.

Now, we're all allowed to be upset, dissapointed and even downright pissed that this off season didn't go the way we all wanted and NO one hates the Tootoo signing more than me... but TRUST your GM. You got the best there is in the game and you should be god damn thankful you do and stop being a spoiled, pissy little brat who doesn't appreciate everything they have gotten, or have, because they didn't get the toy they wanted that year... there will be new toys and you'll probably get those too, so get the f' over yourself and stop telling daddy you hate him and he's the worst dad ever, just because you didn't get a unicorn that never existed in the first place.

Now, things didn't go the way we wanted, so you formulate an action plan... you don't trade away half your roster for a primadona who is goverened by a nutjob that doesn't even realize that 7 draft picks > 1 draft pick, or reach for a replacement to arguably the best (and unarguably top 2) defenseman to ever play the game and trade away too much looking for something you'll never find. There is no replacement to Nick. Probably ever. You do the best you can to adjust, not replace...

Holland is a damn good GM. period.

With that said, we have some young players who are ready to show what they have... there may be some growing pains, but if there was ever the time, it's now.

Once Quincey signs, that will put us at 6 NHL dmen, you sign a big, shot blocker (Jurcina or Vandermeer) as the 7th to a one year deal and let them battle it out in camp for the spots and you give Smith, Ericsson and Kindl ALL a chance to put that extra body in the press box when everyone's healthy.

As for forwards, unless a trade that ACTUALLY makes sense comes across, you stand pat and have faith in the system and, once again, the young guys. Let Nyquist, Brunner, Tatar, Shehan and even Brunnstrom (he's in the process of signing according to reports) come to camp and PROVE they belong, then you give them the spot and give them the faith, without having to look over their shoulders, or going to camp knowing they don't even have a chance to make the team. You put your faith in them, give them the responsibility and the confidence and most importantly... the ice time.

Finally, by doing all of this, you don't handcuff yourself for one year, while in panic mode, when you have a season coming up, in which Iginla, Perry, Getzlaf, Horton, Weiss, Clarkson, Weber, Timonen, Whitney, etc, etc, etc... may be free agents (some may re-sign, but others certainly will not)... oh yea, not to mention several of your own that need to be re-signed and will probably be commanding raises...

This is not a sprint, it is a marathon, have faith and always remember... Holland is a damn good GM. period.

#2314028 Suter Watch: Decision today, down to Wings/Wild

As long as we get Suter... I could care less where Parise goes.

We Need Suter and that is the most important thing.

And for the people who say that I only hate him because he's an agitator, and I'll love him on our team: wrong. An "agitator" is one thing - Tootoo is much more akin to a Matt Cooke or Sean Avery type player who plays selfishly and will take dumb penalties. Nashville had even seemed to figure that out and rolled back his playing time significantly.

I feel like everything I always brag about the Red Wings in terms of playing smart finesse hockey, and winning a Cup with only 11 fighting majors goes out the window when we employ crap like this.

He is more like a Steve Ott than he is a Matt Cooke that is for sure, and as has been shown already with more fighting majors he takes closer PIMs to Bertuzzi than other agitator types lately. Personally, I hope the wings turn him loose and let him go bat s*** crazy howver. Hes also uses big hits and physical play to agitate other teams, not chirping like a little *****. Hes the toughest fighting agitator, and definitely in an argument for hardest hitting forward in the league.

And its funny because the wings have NEVER won the cup with 11 fighting majors. 2008 they did have 21 and also employed a guy with a reputation just as bad as Tootoo's, Dallas Drake. He was a complete beast and spark for the wings in that playoff as well.

When are wings fans going to realize that A: the bottom 6 has done jack s*** for the wings the last couple years and it needs an overhaul

and B: the wings have never won with a team full of *******, and Tootoo helps prevent this from happening

#2313517 Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr

Posted by LeftWinger on 03 July 2012 - 11:06 AM

Uh....nobody really liked the Dallas Drake signing either.... Some of you guys are very finicky....we want toughness, we want someone to stick up for Pav and Z, we want someone who will sacrifice his body, someone to fight in the corners, someone to check people tenasciously...then Holland signs someone like that, and he is only 28 and put in 30 points last season (a career high, so he deserves a raise,) and you all freak out!

If you ask me, a 4th line of Abby - Helm - Tootoo seems to me like a very hard line to play against and one that will generate a TON of excitement with tons of energy and hits...

I like this signing, came out of nowhere and it could be a helpful acquisition in securing Ryan Suter for the next 13 years...and then they BOTH could land us Weber if he becomes a UFA next season...this is no guarantee, but it can't hurt...

Good on you Holland, every year you kick the tires, this year, starting with the draft, you actually have squealed the hell out of those tires and if you can follow this up with Suter, Semin and Nash then those tires will be ripped right from the wheels! Great job so far Kenny, great job!

Could be a good signing. Tootoo is one of the few people I really don't like much in the league largely because of past out of control incidents on the ice. That being said he's still one of the biggest pains in the rear to play against that you'd like to have on your side when he's playing under control. Can usually never go wrong with people willing to run through brick walls to hit somebody or make a play.

Hopefully he gets consistent playing time with the salary he got and won't have any bad incidents.

#2312824 Still no decision from Suter. Speculation abounds.

Lol at dreger and eklund arguing on twitter hahaha

How does eklund still even have a voice in hockey? the guy is a total joke.

When there's guys like McKenzie and Dreger out there, I don't know why anyone would give Eklund a second thought, other than a need for drama or something.
