Tidbit from today's Detroit News:

"...Zetterberg has been out since Feb. 26, when an inflamed herniated disc forced him out of practice, and ultimately, for the rest of the regular season..."

I called this weeks ago when I mentioned that all of Hank's symptoms pointed to exactly that. (Inability to "tie his shoes", pain shooting down the leg, projected recovery time, etc.) Why not just call a spade a spade from the get-go instead of saying it's just "inflamed"?

Guarding against mass hysteria from the fans? ;)

yeah, Zetterberg being injured is a serious problem, and Fans panic if one of the star players are hurt bad. so they always release the least amount of details as possible.

I just hope Zetterberg stays healthy for all the Playoffs and this injury doesen't get in his way in the future as well.

Smart move by the Wings organization to keep that news quiet until Z returned. :sly:

That being said, I think it was more of a ploy to confuse the other team rather than calm the fans.

If that be true, then they shouldn't have released it at all. He will get EXTRA cross-checks now.

True, but the way Bab's says he's been skating around for the past 3 weeks, you gotta think he's "completely" healed, otherwise info like this probably wouldn't have been released.

Could be a "sprain" vs. "strain" thing. They should be more careful with words when they report on injuries, but we know they aren't always.

I am concerned that Hank will play at 50% and not be able to contribute. But perhaps just having him out there will ignite something good.

If so, most completely failed PR move. EVER

Haha, so true.

It just seemed odd that it wasn't called that, always "inflamed". Herniated discs are fairly "common" anyway, for a back injury. I said in the other thread that a large majority of them don't even induce pain (herniation has to be pressing against the nerve -- in this case, Hank's did, with his described leg pain) and rarely result in surgery.

When Hank's recovery time started hitting the 4-6 week area (and further) it seemed like a forgone conclusion that's what it was.

Maybe it wouldn't have been a good idea to say that it was herniated considering the Wings had just acquired a guy that was coming of surgery to repair a herniated disc and was out the last five months, eh?

(When all is said and done I wouldn't be surprised to see Hank undergo some type of procedure after the season is over.)

Surgery is probably going to happen. If Bert taught players anything, it's that a little problem can become a HUGE problem quickly and sideline you for a long time.

Very nice avatar Matt.

I guess now that he's healthy they decide to spill the beans. Funny how that all works.

I don't really think it kept anyone from not panicing. I mean, when they first announced he'd miss a game or two people we're going crazy right then and there. Granted if they would have said herniated disk instead of inflamed it would have been worse, but still.

By the way Matt, I like your avatar. :P

I'm starting to worry a little about Zetterberg's long term health here. (not panic! just a little concern)

He's nowhere near the china doll Kronwall is, but it's a little troubling for one of the core players on the team to have a nagging back injury and chronic wrist problems.

Hopefully part of him being away for so long was healing this up right and really trying to prevent any flare ups.

And Great Avatar Matt. Do you know what the standard instructions are for using one of those?

Pull the pin

Aim at the base of the Flames

Squeeze the trigger

Sweep!

If he isn't already, he should be seeing a chiropractor for this. As a chiropractor myself I help people all day with disc problems with great success.

They brought a back specialist over from Sweden at the recommendation of Hakan Andersson. Zetterberg says his work helped a ton.

I have chronic back issues with two discs, and I don't know how he can even lace his skates if this is what I think it is. We can manage with Dats and Calder and a few others chipping in, as I have thought all along we would not get pre-injury Zata back this season/playoffs.

Lack of offense will be our downfall, I fear, if anything is.

The problem with that type of injury, is it can re-occur. Let's hope Hank stays healthy and is able to bring his "A" game all series.

His A game? The guy has missed almost two months of hockey!?

Oh, I knew the instructions, haha. I thought including them, along with the last step, would be a little bit of overkill, haha. Don't want to insinuate that I think it'll be a sweep...

Well, they have been calling it a inflamed disc and a herniated disc since he's been out.

Could you point me to an article that says Zetterberg has been suffering from a herniated disc prior to today's edition in the Detroit News? Because I've missed it up until this point, apparently.
