I don't get it. Ohhh...I had a professor like that. I'm not a bad writer and I could not get an A. I didn't try too hard on my first paper I admit, but usually I still get A's because my not trying hard papers are still pretty good. So the next paper I worked my butt off and still didn't get an A. I think I never ever did get an A in any of the papers and I worked really hard on them. I was nearly in tears being so mad about it. I feel your pain. Either the teacher is just sort of biased sometimes, or very very strict grader, although I always follow all standards, but maybe he just didn't think my paper is strong enough. Similarly in my drawing class my teacher would always come up and critisize my work. I was annoyed because the people around me weren't as good and he'd never say anything to them. It was really frustrating that they'd have a mish mosh and I'd have this work of art and he'd come over and be like..this is off or that is off. and I'd leave feeling like I wasn't good enough. By the end of the semester though, I started realizing that he wasn't really talking to the others because he didn't think they were that good...like he didn't think they had potential so he didn't really bother to critisize them. I was in a split advanced class with a lower side and an upper side. For my evaluation at the end he was like..you are in the upper side right? I was like no... So the whole time he thought I was in Drawing 2 and I was in Drawing 1. It was a compliment. Sometimes teachers just push you hard because they want a lot out of you. Oh...and sometimes they're just jerks haha. Secret option #3 is you'll look back and realize that it wasn't as good as you thought..but I will totally give you the benefit of the doubt because I've been there. I turned in a history paper earlier this semester that I thought was great, got a b on it.
