betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 7, 2006 Priceless exchange between the Twins broadcasters (Dick Bremer and Bert Blyleven): "I like roller coasters - the big kind, the ones that go up and down, round and round and hopefully you end up back where you started." "See, that's why I don't like them - the best thing that can happen is you get off alive. With a lot of screaming in between. Why would you do that to yourself?" "Sounds like my first marriage." BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted May 9, 2006 Disappointing series with the Twinkies, but the Metrodome isn't exactly the Tigers best park. Hopefully they can take at least 2 of 3 from the O's starting tonight.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 10, 2006 wow, look who's batting second for the O's tonight. Chris Gomez. Now there's a blast from the past.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted May 11, 2006 Poor Gomez...man that had to hurt, Im surprised his hand isnt broken. Speaking of blasts from the past, I enjoyed Kaline's inning and a half. I really miss his broadcasting. Whew...back on the winning track Magglio is just on fire, that change in his stance has been great. All made sense the way Kaline described the change. They had Kaline in the booth?!?!? Aw man!!! Extra Innings for some reason wasn't working on the ONE CHANNEL that had the Tigers game, and I had to miss it! I feel double- and triple-cheated!! Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted May 11, 2006 Yep, Kaline was in the house! A few prospect notes for the Tigs: Zach Miner SP (AAA Toledo) 5-0 2.03 ERA Brent Clevlen OF (AA Erie) .231 2 HR 14 RBI Humberto Sanchez SP (AA Erie) 3-2 2.51 ERA, 54 SO 43 IP Jair Jurrjens SP (A Lakeland) 3-0 1.93 ERA, 30 SO 37.1 IP Kevin Whelan CL (A Lakeland) 1-0 2.45 ERA 7 Sv Cameron Maybin OF (A West MI) .330 1 HR 19 RBI, 6 SB Very impressed with Miner's stats, he could turn out to be a steal in the Farnsworth trade. Kinda like when Nate Robertson was more or less a throw in the Mark Redman trade to FLA (Rob Henkel was the primary target). At the time we acquired Miner last year he was 1-7 with an ERA in the 4's for the Braves AAA team. I guess DD saw something there! Clevlen needs to start picking it up, especially after making the spring training splash. Maybin's lookin good...expected a little more power though but i wont get greedy yet.
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted May 11, 2006 I would have loved to have heard Kaline in the booth again. Of course, the only Tigers games I'm going to get to watch on TV are the three they have against the Astros. And even then I'll have to listen to the Houston feed. BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted May 17, 2006 Come Tigers fans, where ya at? The Tigs are tied with Chicago for first place in the Central, and for the best record in baseball

Not to bring in a negative vibe...but this is where the Tigers of old would now drop 6 out of the next 7 games. Lets see whatcha got Leyland!

Lets see whatcha got Leyland! Its kinda tough being a Tigers fan right now. Iu want to believe so badly that they've finally turned it around, but I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hell of a game last night from what I could tell. I'm going to have to spring for the MLB.com streaming video so I can watch a game. Or at the very least, get the audio. Iu want to believe so badly that they've finally turned it around, but I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. I am approaching each series and saying to myself "let's see if they can get past this team". The way they are playing leads you to believe that this team has turned it around completely and will contend for the ...dare i say it...playoffs. But like you blak, I am still waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think from May 26-June 8 will be the biggest indication of if this team is for real. 3 home games against the Indians, 4 home games against the Yankees, 3 home games against the Red Sox, and 3 road games against the White Sox. Tigers won't have another brutal stretch like that so those 13 games could shape this season. The good news is all of those 13 games will be on FSN. :carrot:

Yeah like i posted earlier..everytime they lose one game im like oh s***..here we go! But then they always seem to come back and win the next one. Im still leery that Mags is gonna hurt his knee..or Verlander will hurt his shoulder. This all just seems too perfect right now. We're even lucking out with the bad stuff...like Dmitri Young being the one accused of domestic violence and not someone good like Guillen Good game yesterday, kinda shocking that Verlander had 0 K's. Vance Wilson coming through!
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 18, 2006 If you're waiting for the other shoe to drop.....grab a Snickers. Sparky always said the 40-game mark was the time to take a look at your team to really see what you've got. Jim Leyland (who I worship forever) doesn't put much stock in that, but Sparky is a Hall of Famer so I have to think he knows what he's talking about too. Thusly, take a look at some statistics I gathered: Pitching: AWESOME. Bob Cluck said for a couple years that the rotation was going to really bloom in 2006. Even he is probably surprised at how right he was. He didn't figure with Rogers, and maybe not Verlander (although he was drafted in 2004, so he probably included Justin). But Maroth, Bonderman, and Robertson were certainly part of his thinking. Here is the rotation's ERA, to start. Maroth: 2.18 Rogers: 2.69 (including today's game) Verlander: 3.18 Robertson: 3.50 Bonderman: 3.74 All five are in the top 40 in ERA, league-wide. Only the Dodgers have as many as three, nobody else has more than two. The White Sox do, the Twins have one, and the Indians and Royals none. The WHIPs are just as good: Rogers at 1.14, Verlander 1.18, and Bonderman is a sparkling 1.04. Additionally, Bonderman has an excellent groundball-to-flyball ratio of 1.7, and 47 Ks. In other words, that 3.74 ERA is going to come down. Last, and the best part, is that the Tigers haven't been getting lucky. Nor have they been unlucky. If you haven't heard of he Pythagorean win percentage, it's this: (runs scored^2) / ( (runs scored^2)+(runs allowed^2) ) It's an excellent indicator of what a team's W/L record should be - rarely does a team finish more than 5 wins either way of what their expected percentage is, and teams that do always regress to the mean the following year. Basically it measures luck. The Tigers' Pythagorean record is exactly the same as their real record, meaning they haven't been lucky at all. Or unlucky. In the Pythagorean standings, the Tigers are 2.5 games ahead of the White Sox, 2 ahead of the Yankees, and 5 ahead of Boston. In other words, the Tigers' are for real to stay, with the pitching they have. And the luck factor over the first quarter of the season means the other teams should (statistically speaking) back off a bit, while the Tigers hold steady. Watching this season is going to make every....single....one....of those 119 losses worth it.

timothy1997 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2006 what a game tonight!!! Tigers start off to an early lead, zumaya gives up the granny to Griffey, granderson ties in with a homer in the 9th, and monroe knocks in a run in the 10th. Anyone who had their doubts if this team is for real, just needs to look at this game. They could have given up tons of times, yet battled thru and got a huge win. GO TIGERS!! betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 21, 2006 Back in first outright with the Sox losing to the Cubbies today. And what was this, the 7th or 8th shutout of the year? Who knew the pitching would turn out like this? The ol' Rollercoaster broke Mike Henneman's Tigers' saves record, too, with his 155th.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted May 21, 2006 What a great last 2 games....and all this despite DY the rally killer being in the lineup We're gonna have to go out and get a lefty bat at some point if this keeps up...
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 Unbelievable...9th shutout!! Verlander still hitting 99 in the 9th inning, Inge and Granderson with 10 and 8 HRs now respectively. Maggs has been turning into the RBI machine we hoped. Mientkiewicz was in awe of Verlander..saying thats the best stuff he's seen. I love it!
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted May 25, 2006 The Tigs have now taken 12 of the last 13. After KC though, there is a brutal stretch of games coming up. Cleveland, NY and Boston at home, followed by Chicago and Toronto on the road. A good stretch here means this team has what it takes to play with the big boys
timothy1997 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2006 the world must be definately turned upside down. I am totally pissed off that the tigers game today is not on tv. Never been that upset about missing a tigers game before.
dallas27 7 Report post Posted May 25, 2006 Good win yesterday, Stairs homer only made it interesting as after the 5th inning or so they were never in it. That was a hideous swing by Stairs as well...
