betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 9, 2006 Been feeling the same way lately. I know exactly why: baseball is my favorite sport, I didn't get to watch any Tigers at all last year, having been overseas during the whole season, and I've got Center Ice, so I rarely miss a Wings game.....in other words, I need my Tigers fix! And they happen to be doing very well, so, bonus. If the Tigers aren't on TV, I recommend using MLB's site to follow the game online - it updates faster, and you get a neat little graphic with stats and junk. i like the yahoo one. Plus I got to check on my fantasy team. Ironically, I finally have a solid team top to bottom..except no tigers...and i am getting killed by chris shelton and this other teams tigers..lol I have Shelton on both of my teams plus Verlander on one of them....a very deep keeper league. and I have Maggs and Bonderman in the other. funny enough, I'm doing well out of the gate. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted April 10, 2006 I hate Dmitri Young. I dont care what power he provides, his negatives outweigh it. You can just sense everytime he gets 2 strucks he's gonna whiff...then that weak ass double play. Bump Shelton to 5, move DY to 8.

He wouldve been gunned had Crede not lifted his glove up, but still, yeah it was very surprising! Not quite as suprising as when gets a walk though

BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted April 10, 2006 I was at opening day for the Tigers today. Other than the homers, the Tigers pitching didn't look that bad. Of course, its kind of hard to judge when you started drinking at 9:00 am

BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted April 11, 2006 (edited) Blak- It sounded on the tv that the loudest cheers during the intro were for Leyland and Shelton. How did it sound there??? That's how it sounded to me. Shelton and Leyland got the most cheers, along with Jerome Bettis. Kwame got boo'ed, although not as bad as last year. Zumaya got a pretty good round of applause when he came out too. I was at opening day last year too, and the crowd today didn't seem as fired up. I don't know if its because the weather was a little cooler, or that the season had already started, there wasn't the electricity there was last year. And, we were sitting at the very top of the upper deck behind home plate, so the F-16's flew right over us. It was pretty f**king cool Edited April 11, 2006 by BlakChamber
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 11, 2006 I saw the last half of the Cardinals home opener today, at the brand new Busch Stadium. That new park is be-you-tee-ful! Sure is. To me one of the best features of these new parks is a view of the city out past centerfield. The new Busch Stadium has a fantastic view. Pittsburgh is another place where they have that as well....and of course, our own Comerica too
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 15, 2006 Has anyone else heard the White Sox announcers? And if you have, do you agree with me that they're about the worst announcers in history? Biggest homers you've ever heard - you expect a little home-team perspective no matter what, but with these guys it's worse than anything you'll hear out of a Divealanche homer. They never call their players by their names, always nicknames that nobody else has for them. And they have no clue how to call a game - they'll sit there in total stone silence while three pitches go by, then one will go out on a limb with "Y'know, a home run would be really nice right about here." "Sure would." Then three more pitches of silence. Worst part is I know I've heard them before - about ten years ago. Or at least, I know that ten years ago, I heard the White Sox TV announcers continally refer to the Sox as the good guys and say things like "and we go to the top of the 7th, score is 5-2, bad guys." So either these clowns have been allowed to stay on the air for an obscenely long time, or the White Sox have a policy mandated complete on-air idiocy. In complete contrast, the Indians announcers were professionals on the air and while they were still clearly on Cleveland's side, they called the game square and kept a smooth broadcast going. Still makes me miss when George Kell and Al Kaline were calling TV games, though. There never was a better pair in the booth. Nothing against Paul Carey, he and Ernie were fantastic on the air, but Bucko the Circus Clown could have paired with Ernie Harwell and sounded good. Kell and Kaline had terrific chemistry. OK, rant over. Fortunately, we don't see the Chisox again til June, and hopefully the FSD broadcast will be on Extra Innings then.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted April 15, 2006 Im gonna have to disagree. For whatever reason, Ive always really liked Hawk Harrellson the play by play guy. "You can put it on the boaaaaaard.....YES!" Or my favorite, "He gone!" Yeah ive noticed to that they always call guys by nicknames or just by their first name, like..."here comes AJ up to the plate.." As for all the silence, I like that too. For me its like golf, I dont want guys yapping endlessly throughout the at bats, or trying to predict all the pitches only to see the pitcher throw the complete opposite. I liked the old colorman too Tom Paciorek (originally from Hamtramck MI i think), but i think he either retired or got replaced last i saw.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted April 15, 2006 Hopefully ho ass DY goes on the DL with that quad injury. Time to move Guillen to the 5th slot, give Shelton a guy who can actually get on base in front of him. Whats the use in having a free swinger like Young batting in front of your hottest hitter? Time to move Guillen to the 5th slot, give Shelton a guy who can actually get on base in front of him. Whats the use in having a free swinger like Young batting in front of your hottest hitter? Guillen definitely belongs in that 5th slot. As you said, Dmitri makes no sense in front of Shelton - he'll either strike out, or clear the bases himself. And anybody but Dmitri would have scored on Shelton's double yesterday (the one where Dmitri got hurt). I like Dmitri a lot. He came to the Tigers after a crummy 66-96 season having signed a long-term contract and declared he was "in heaven" (music to my ears at a time when so many free agents were treating phone calls from the Tigers like 1 AM calls from a telemarketer). He stuck by the Tigers during those god-awful '02 and '03 seasons and hit like a monster despite being surrounded in the lineup by the likes of Warren Morris and Andres Torres. Dmitri's been one of the most flat-out loyal guys to the team and the city, and for that, I'll stick by him. That said, the lineup after Maggs at cleanup should always have been: Guillen, Shelton, Monroe, Dmitri, Inge. Let Shelton double in the runs in front of him and then get some power from the 8th spot, with Inge to set it up going back around. We'll just have to agree to disagree on Harrelson and Darrin Jackson (I think that's who replaced Paciorek). I wouldn't mind their tongue-drooping homerism if they could call a game, but they have absolutely nothing to add to the broadcast. They may as well head down for a mid-inning beer run and potty break for all I would have noticed. That's probably on the color commentator, Jackson.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted April 15, 2006 Warren Morris....lol i havent thought about him in a long time. The only thing i still remember about him is hitting that homer for LSU and rounding the bases with his arms up. Such a great MLB career! Exactly, just makes no sense having Young at 5. Like you said he's either gonna clear the bases or strikeout...he sure as hell aint gonna walk especially if he's behind the count at any point. Guillen at least knows how to work the count and has some power himself. I do respect DY for being loyal though and hell ive never even heard him complain...but he still pisses me off alot as a hitter. When he gets 2 strikes you might as well just walk out the room cause he's K'in. I can understand putting him at 7 after Shelton if theres a righty on the mound...but certainly not ahead of him under any circumstances. Yep, its Darrin Jackson that does the color. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 15, 2006 Holy crap what a s***ty ass lineup they got out there today... Why is Leyland completely emptying the bench? The only bench guy not out there is Santiago. Why would you put Wilson, Infante, Gomez up from Toledo, and Thames all out there in the same game? There's a reason they're not the starters. Bonderman didn't help matters, either. Pleh.

I can understand Pudge, but damn... hes got Maggs AND Polanco out too. And the way the lineup is put together is pathetic! Inge hitting 5th? Thames hitting cleanup??? Jesus at least put Shelton and Monroe at 4 and 5! I know Leyland said he doesnt wanna move Shelton up but come on...Inge and Thames?!!! Is it just me or does Inge only hit well when he's at the bottom of the order? Seems like everytime he's moved up to 2 or 3 he just strikes out and doesnt do ANYTHING.. Well, Thames did almost hit a home run just now, but Hollandsworth decided he didn't like that idea. Bastard. Ordinarily I'd be thinking the Tigers could pull back into this, even down 7, but for some reason, Alexis Gomez doesn't inspire my confidence.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted April 16, 2006 This just in: Joel Zumaya still has the meanest stuff this side of a 26-year-old Roger Clemens. It's not fair for hitters to watch Mike Maroth soft-toss his way through seven innings and then have to try and catch up to Zumaya's gas. And Maroth, by the way, pitched a masterful game today. He's a candidate to pull a Kenny Rogers or a Jamie Moyer and pitch til he's fossilized. It's not like he's gonna lose anything off his blazing 85 fastball, and he has tremendous command when he's on. Conventional wisdom says the Tigers are likely to deal a starter at the deadline. My wisdom hopes it's Robertson and not Maroth.

I loved that scene with the last strikeout where Pudge and Zumaya were both pumping their fists. Maroth pitched a hell of a game. Contrary to what i posted earlier, now im not so sure they'll be dealing a starter at the deadline. If they do, it will probably be to open up a spot in the rotation for Tata, not Zumaya. So it would all depend on how well Tata continues pitching. If Tata goes to Toledo when Todd Jones comes back, and does really well starting there, a trade could happen. Otherwise they probably wont feel the need to trade one of them. Clevlen struggling so far down in Erie...come on Brent start tearin it up!!
