The Honorable MICHAEL IANNAZZO wishes to put forth the following resolution before the committee:

Resolution 1(a) states thus:

At no time shall a player of the National Hockey League have their name modified in any such way with the suffix of -ie (-ey) for no good reason. Players like Dan Cleary will be--in all times past, present, or future--known soley as "Dan" Cleary, as opposed to "Danny" Cleary, (further examples: "Dougie" Weight, "Roddie" Brind'Amour, "Scottie" Niedermayer, etc.).

Players whose names don't sound embarassing with the suffix may retain it ("Stevie" Yzerman); players whose names actually include the suffix may retain it ("Jamie" Langenbrunner).

Commentators, posters, and all others found guilty of this crime shall henceforth and forthwith have their names ammended to include the -ie suffix, and further have their names ammended if it isn't quite embarassing enough (think "Chris").

All in the favor of this resolution, say "aye."

LOL.

Should Bill Clement get this memo so he can stop with the "Nicky Lidstrom" remarks?

I believe Chicken Parm and Ed got the memo, because during the last NBC broadcast I watched they were both calling him Billy. :P

well, since I am from Newfoundland and Cleary is from Newfoundland, and everyone around Newfoundland calls him Danny Cleary, I will continue to call him that.

See I don't get this, why is he a keeper? Because he played for Detroit? What was so special about his game that we couldn't replace at all? It's not like he's a physical preence, he tries to be, but more times than not he's on the short end of hits, and he has about as much goal scoring touch as Boyd Deveraux. Now, if you want him to replace Draper or Malby at a bargain basement price, ok, but I don't get what he brings that this team can't find in either Grand Rapids or on the UFA market.

In a word, yes. If we let Cleary go, and all we do is get someone who is equally as good, then we should have remained loyal to our guy in the first place. I think its a knee-jerk reaction to just get rid of a guy just because you can get another guy. And its not like he was a liability. He played well, and yes, here's hoping we get some more goals out of him. But you don't get more goals if you let him go. So keep him another year, nothing hurt.

Cleary has been in the NHL for years now...i hardly understand the give him a chance logic you seem to be implying

Dan Cleary becoming a star is laughable..

Had to bump this thread...he might not be a star, but he has definitely been one of the best players on this team this season...it's awesome that he's been doing so well...I am honestly thinking about getting a Cleary jersey for Christmas...he's been great all year...hope he keeps it up!

At first, I thought that this was a new threads. I was looking at the "league minimum!" comments and just wanting to scream at the computer. Then I looked at the posting dates

Anyway, Cleary has REALLY impressed me, needless to say. Beyond his playmaking abilities, I'm just shocked at his newfound speed-- did any of you see that crazy break in on Khabi last night? He didn't score, but he had outrageous acceleration.

Anything more than the minimum and he's getting overpaid. He played gritty in the playoffs, I'll give him that, but he always comes on the short end of a bodycheck, and can't finish to save his life. His spot could be better utilized by a Grand Rapids prospect, who's younger and deserves a chance. Now if this means Maltby will be traded, fine, but someone will need to explain the reasons behind this signing if that's not the case

...oops :P

Wow, its awsome that you pulled this thread up. Im sure it hurts to eat your words. Hindsight is 20 / 20, but the gritmasters really laid into Cleary-the-goal-scoring-pk-machine-pp-specialist.

Overall though, I am really glad he is producing the way that he is. SOMEONE needed to in light of all the injuries and slumps.

I'll admit I was wrong about this one, he's a steal at this price. But let's put this in prospective, no one thought he was going to lead the team in goals, and my issue with Cleary was that he was a Maltby clone, so if you sign Cleary I would hope you lose Maltby. Funny though, I could bring up threads where myself and a few others were talking about how the Wings wouldn't do anything in the playoffs because they didn't have the necessary grit needed.

I could bring up threads where people thought Phoenix would be in great shape because of all of the grit they added, I could bring up threads saying how Calgary was built for the playoffs last year.

Truth be told, being a team is a lot more important than the type of players on it.

Edmonton and Carolina were both successful because how they played as a unit, not because they had a Brian McGrattan who took care of business by himself. It's a team effort, and without that it doesn't matter how many goal scorers, how many big hitters, you don't have anything without that cohesiveness. Hopefully the Wings find that sooner than later.

Buit it doesn't hurt that they had the right mix to begin with.
