Wings Goaltending After the Old MEn

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

After Hask and Osgood retire or die, which ever comes first, Detroit needs to find a decent, hard working first sting goaltender to mind the nets. Now McDonald is a ok goal but he won't be a first string tender but hey that’s what I think. So who you do think the wings should get???

You think he is going to step it up for us. You've got to be kidding me!

what makes u think otherwise? so far we havnt seen anything bad from him. plus we have Stephan Liv as well, so we can strike out twice before we go out and pay someone alot of money to fail in detroit

Well Osgood has another year on his contract after this season so I expect Holland will go after another goalie during the off-season since it's obvious he doesn't feel comfortable with Ozzy as his starter.

My hope is that Ozzy can handle the load with Howard as his backup. I do not believe many star-caliber goalies are going to be available this summer. The last thing I want this team to do is put all there cap-space into a goalie who is only going to be here for a max of 2 seasons. I expect Howard to be ready by then.

How old is Liv and Howard do they have experince in the NHL other then a few games.

Sooner or later they're gonna have to get some experience, aren't they? If you don't let them start because they don't have any experience, then when do they ever play at all?

Like it or not, the Wings are pinning their goaltender hopes on Howard. Liv will probably get a shot if Howard isn't cutting it, but Howard is the future.

No, he shouldn't. Why bother developing a goalie if you're not gonna use him? This is the salary cap era. Every dollar spent on an overpaid free agent goalie is one less to spend on the rest of the team.

or dies.... is that supposed to be funny? <_<

Growing up my dad, a leafs fan, would always can the wings the dead things. I thought it was funny so when I made my account I went with it. Also Howard is the future. Ok I just hope he can still get us into the playoffs.

Yes he should. You can develop a good back up goalie while having a pretty good starter. Yes this is the era of the salary cap but the board is talking about razing it. Also Holland could trade away players that have just gotton to old or that just don't do anything.

Glad you think it's so easy to just trade away a player that doesn't do anything. Tell me, what would another GM want with a useless player that's too old?

And if you think the board is talking about getting rid of the salary cap, you need a lesson in NHL 101. The cap is here to stay. The BoG will NOT be getting rid of it. Seriously man.

and how praytell will we afford Kipper? and who will you part with to bring him here?

and where have you heard any talk about doing anything to the cap?

do you mean "raising" it, based on increased revenue? because "razing" it means demolishing it.

Apparently you haven't heard of Jimmy Howard.

OR maybe hes been looking at the stats and realizes that Howard needs time an may never materialize...

23 Jimmy Howard Grand Rapids Griffins 30 1677 841 78 3 2.79 0.907 14 12 1

In fact Drew MacIntyre who we gave away is doing much better:

4 Drew MacIntyre Manitoba Moose 27 1443 681 54 2 2.24 0.921 14 7 2

Admittedly, I haven't seen Jimmy play in the AHL, but I don't think you can tell a whole lot just by looking at the stats there.

The AHL is not the defensive minded game that the NHL is.

It sounds like he's not ready yet, but I haven't heard anything about him being a wash.

I agree, BUT if the wings can sign a proven start goalie with playoff experience, they should. I'm not sold on Howard, atleast not yet... at the very least he needs another year starting in the AHL before hes good to go.

I wanted to see Raycroft and Toskala brought in last summer. Both could have been acquired for reasonable prices. Having those guys would have given us two solid goalies, either of which could carry the bulk of the games. They also would have given Howard and Liv plenty of time to develop in a no-pressure situation in Grand Rapids... much like Buffalo did by leaving Ryan Miller in Rochester until he absolutely dominated that league. It also would have given the Wings some tradeable assets when Howard and/or Liv were ready. Imagine going into training camp with 4 potential #1 goalies!!!

That said, Hasek's return to Detroit has worked out brilliantly. He's taking this opportunity seriously, knows he's lucky to be back here, has refined his style to reduce strain on his groin, shed 10 pounds (not like he was fat to begin with) and is always in a good mood, willing to talk to and joke with the press. I thought the Wings would regret signing Hasek, I thought he would bomb. I'm happy to say I was wrong.

However, Hasek won't be able to play forever if Howard and/lor Liv aren't ready. Osgood can't stay healthy, meaning he can't play consistently. So it's either going to be Hasek or another stopgap.

Yeah, it sounds like he's gonna be in the AHL another year, so I'm not sure what's gonna happen for the Wings after this season.

Even if Dom holds up this season, do we want to press our luck another year?

And Ozzy would have to suddenly get healthy and start playing well to begin to even think about him as our starter.

The problem is that even under the cap, goaltenders go at a premium.

I wonder... if Minnie would part with either Backstrom or Fernandez either guy would work well for a few years as Howard hopefully devlopes and takes over.

How was Toskala available at a reasonable price, or even available? After having a better season than Nabokov and being cheaper, if any goalie was going to be goal, it was Nabby. I never heard anything about Toskala being available except on this board, who considered every goalie in the league available last summer.

Well, f***.. Osgood just played a GREAT game. I feel very confident in our goaltending going into the playoffs!!

I spent a bit of time explaining the salary cap situation--lots of space for the Wings--to my dad earlier tonight. I remarked to him that we had so much money in part because we'd saved for a starting goaltender, and gotten Hasek at an outrageously low price (which has, of course, panned out very well). The end result of this bargain: we have two very capable, Stanley-Cup winning goaltenders for the combined annual price of $1,600,000. WOW.

I admit, Osgood brushed me the right way tonight. Go Ozman!

PFFFFFFFFFT. Fodder.

This may very well be Hasek's last season, but Osgood is'nt old. He's still got some years left in him.Whether he plays the rest of those years here remains to be seen though. If we were to pick up a replacement for them,i'd like it to someone that does'nt have a huge contract, and can fill the gap until Howard and/or Liv are ready to come up.No need to go out and sign a guy with a Khabibulin-like salary.Biron has been mentioned many times on this board.I think he'd be perfect.Or perhaps David Aebisher.
