Lebda hit from behind, suffers concussion

I dont have much sympathy at all for guys who turn their backs to try and avoid being hit. From the replay, it looked that MAY have been the case...i'd have to see it again. However, it also looked like Ville had ample time to at least let up a little.

Sorry, but I gotta go with the Blues fans on this one then. I don't like Ville but it was a good, and fair, check.

So you don't think he will be suspended for it? Or it warrented a game misconduct?

Mick pointed out what Lidstrom did when he went after a Blues player in the corner and how you take them out of the play, effectively. Lidstrom could of done the same thing, but the difference is Villie shoved his face in the boards, full force.

I think you probably hate about 80% of the players in the league, since almost everyone turns the back to avoid a hit. I generally don't agree with it either, since it's putting yourself in extreme danger.

Since when was a hit from behind clean? I absolutely disagree. If that was the case why kick him out of the game then?

I didn't see the hit, but am surprised so many people are saying it was clean.

According to ESPN.com, Ville got a major penalty and was ejected from the game. Is that true?

I just assumed a dirtbag like Nieminen threw a cheapshot.

Its clean if a guy is going for a hit and the player turns his back at the last second,....i couldnt tell if Lebda seen him coming though. But Ville had moved in to check him before Lebda had turned.

It was definitely from behind. 1 game suspension seems justifiable, but the refs did the right thing giving him a 5:00 major and the like. I don't think much more action will be taken.

:unsure: Clean or dirty, pick one.

Redmond analyzed it pretty well. Lebda was primarily focused on the guy coming at him from behind the net and was in the process of turning the other way with it. Ville checked him from behind and got the hands up to the back of the head, and Lebda got cut on the board supports.

Didnt say i hate people who do that, just that its hard to have sympathy for anyone who sees a hit coming and then turns their back.

EDIT: too trigger happy with the mouse button!

Game misconduct b/c of the unfortuante result. Would get no more than a game suspension, if any IMO.

Lidstrom could've done the same thing, yes, but you are comparing to completely different playing styles. Lidstrom doesn't play as much of a grinding/physical game, whilel Niminnen does, so that argument is moot in my mind.

I don't get how people can even say it didn't warrent a misconduct. I can remember last year when draper hit a guy from behind, I'll be a lot softer and got a game misconduct and the other player wasn't even hurt.... whether Lebda turned or not, you have to be in control of your actions and have the common sense to let up.

Anyways, I am just sick of seeing NHLers taken off on stretchers. I know it is the risk of playing, but it seems to be happening alot lately.

I didn't see it but was listening on the web. Paul Woods said the bad thing was that Nieminen jammed Lebda's head against the dashers. That's why I thought Nieminen was ejected, not for simply hitting Lebda in the back.

Either way Nieminen got what he deserved at the very least. Woods said Nieminen deserves at least a two-game suspension too.

IMO Woods, a former Wing, is far from being a homer. He seems very objective to me, and I respect his commentary.

In fact I get mad at him at times b/c he's not homer.

Anyway I say all that to say even though I haven't seen the hit yet, I agree with Woods.

Hits from behind can certainly be clean.

He was kicked out of the game b/c of the after effect IMO.

If Lebda didn't get injured, probably would've just been a minor penalty me thinks.

I didn't see the video on NHL.com or YouTube.

Oh and I guess y'all missed my earlier post ...

ACCORDING TO RED WINGS RADIO ANNOUNCER PAUL WOODS NIEMINEN GOT A GAME MISCONDUCT BECAUSE HE JAMMED LEBDA'S HEAD INTO THE DASHERS!

Nieminen had PLENTY of time to pull up, but instead drove Lebda all the way through to the boards hard with his hands up behind the head. Absolutely a cheap hit. He just went to the hospital so he wouldn't get beat up as bad next year when we see him again (whatever team he's on).

f*** Nieminen!

So yeah I hate boarding and spearing and think they should both be automatic minimums of 3 games...However I didn't see the hit and can't judge it but article on mlive says niemminen visited Lebda in the hospital to make sure he was okay, so I don't really have anything bad to say about the guy.

Missed the game because I forgot it was on early (hate it when they do that, but what choice do I have? Just gotta look at the schedule closer), so I missed the hit. Damn shame yet another Wing was hurt. It's starting to get on my nerves how our guys are getting injured near the end of the regular season, but what can you do, it's a rough game. Hopefully, Lebs will be back healthy for the playoffs.

Get well, Lebda!

Something I forgot to add in my last post...

The game gets rough emotions flow, people get carried away...

If Niemenen is man enough to go make sure Lebda is okay after that, the only concern I have is that he should be suspended, and I don't hate him for it at all.

Colin Campbell was on HNIC and said that Niemenen wouldn't be suspended for the hit on Lebda

I think that is appropriate, seeing as Villle visited Lebda in the hospital. Maybe a 1 game suspension but the would probably do nothing.

Bulls*** if you ask me. Just because the Blues announcers said that Niemenen went to visit Lebda in the hospital, doesn't mean he actually did. Guess we'll have to wait and see if he did or not, but he still could have been suspended.

I didn't see the hit, so I can't comment on if it warrants a suspension or not.

But I will say this, behavior off the ice, even if it is apologizing, doesn''t erase any behavior on the ice.

If the hit warrants a suspension, he should get one, apology or not.

The hit was mildly bad, but it's not like he beheaded Lebda or anything. Now, if Lebda is seriously hurt and misses a bunch of games, which is turn will force me to watch Lilja, then I'd have to reconsider my opinion of course. :P
