A New Summit Series?

I personally don't think it makes a lot of sense. It made sense back in 1972 since none of the Russians played in the NHL, so everyone was interested in how they would really match up - Best on Best.

They all already play against each other and all the best players are in the NHL and international competition is usually best on best.

This is my gut reaction......note that I have not read the article and 1972 was before my time.

I agree with the posts above. I just dont think it could ever be dublicated. AS mentioned, none of the Russians were in the NHL so it was these elite guys who we had never seen before. There was so much about it, the really did hate one another. It would be difficult to imagine Fedorov wanting to rip Shanny's head off.

Also, back in 1972, one could argue that Canada and Russia were leaps and bounds above every other hockey playing nation in talent. But with the increasing popularity of the game, the playing field has balanced out.

Paul Henderson`s goal can never be repeated. It would be very interesting to see though. I`d watch it. Who would the Americans cheer for? (pretty obvious) just wondering though :D

Yeah, the Iron Curtain has fallen and Russia is no longer the big bad enemy of freedom.

I'd rather see a European champ face the STanley Cup champ in a 7 game series.

There have been talks that in the next 20 years that is how the Stanley Cup will be decided.

Interesting idea, it would be good hockey, but it wouldn't be the same. We have all the best Russian players in the NHL, and I don't think it would be as big a deal in Canada if they lost.

In the past it was not only hockey, but it was almost like Democratic ideas vs. Communist ideas. Considering Communism in Russia fell, it wouldn't be the same.

I know this idea has been brought up many a time, and it seems some people are a fan of it, but is the NHL really that stupid (probably). What a bitter taste it would leave in the mouths of NHL fans if a European team won the cup. Not only that, but it somewhat demeans the regular season knowing that you wont even play another NHL team for the cup. Not to mention, the battle would be unfair to begin with since European teams dont have 82 game seasons.

I swear. The NHL is concerned about its popularity, but now their actually thinking of jeopardizing ANY North American teams chances of winning the cup.

All great points. I hadn't even considered the lesser schedule these guys play. And their playoffs aren't as grinding as ours either.

In the end it's just a gimic that'll be used to draw more interest in Europe. But as long as there are timezone issues you're not going to get 2,000,000 Swedes staying up to watch a Devils-Wild matchup. Heck, I don't think you could get 20 people to watch that game.
