#8 spot in east decided today by a shootout

I'll take a tie over a gimmick win any day.

The NHL should simply go to 1 20-minute sudden-death overtime. 5 on 5 play for the OT. Winner gets the 2 points, loser gets nothing. After 20 minutes of OT, if it is still tied, so be it...each team then gets 1 point.

The NBA is able to do endless OT if needed, there is no reason when the NHL can't do 20 minutes. I don't think that there would be many ties anymore if they did this...

The Isles winning on a shootout goal was awesome. You want edge of your seat excitement, this is it. GREAT finish to the regular season.

Definitely the highlight of the week for the NHL. Must suck to be a Leafs fan though. I bet they were pissed that Broduer wasn't starting.

I like the shootout, but I am glad that the Cup or a series is not going to be decided by it.

Because 20 minutes of hockey is about 40 minutes of broadcast time. That would happen quite a lot over the course of a season. The networks won't want to be forever having to choose between pre-empting their programming and leaving the hockey viewers in the dust. (And there aren't as many hockey viewers as, say, NBA viewers, especially on NBC - you think NBC would stick with each and every game to the conclusion, especially if it's so likely to just end up a lousy tie anyway?)

The NBA only uses 5 minutes of OT and once, maybe twice a season needs 2OT to decide a game. That's still less time than a 20-minute hockey period would last, even counting breaks. And that's if they ever go to OT at all, which is maybe 10% of the time that the NHL does. The relative ease of scoring a basket in the NBA just about guarantees that a tie game will be easily resolved, so the networks don't worry about it. "The NBA does it, why can't the NHL?" just isn't a valid comparison.

I can certainly understand why people don't like the shootout.

What I don't understand is how people can prefer a tie.

The only reason I prefer a tie is it's the lesser of two evils.

Not a terribly satisfying ending, I know, but it preserves the integrity of the game.

That's why I'd go for the 10 minute 4 on 4 in OT. That and the new rules should help decide a lot more games.

Unfortunately, the shootout is the best option given the existence of the OTL point.

A team that gives up a goal 4 seconds into OT gets the same reward as a team that lasts 5 minutes without giving up a goal.

The ideal solution is to move to move to one of the following:

Without shootouts:

2 pts for any win, 0 points for any loss, 1 point tie. 10 minute OT 4-on-4, as you and I have both suggested in the past.

With shootouts:

3 points for regulation or OT win, 2 points for shootout win, 1 point for shootout loss, 0 points for regulation or OT loss. This is more fair than the current point structure, preserves the 'no lousy ties' situation, and gives more of an incentive to win the game before the shootout.

Right now, teams will play conservatively in the OT because trying to score can end up costing you the game, and weaker teams get a better chance to receive the same 2 points in the shootout that they would receive in the OT, without losing anything by going to the SO.
