Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 Certainly points do count for a power forward, and his lack of points is therefore a source of concern. But again, he's coming off of major surgery that sidelined him for most of the regular season and is trying to work his style of play into a new system -- during the heat of the playoffs, no less. That's an incredibly tough situation to acclimate to. Look, I'm usually very quick to ***** out players, but I strongly believe that so much of what Bert's getting thrown his way is unjustified. If his presence is all it takes, it helps. We have always been criticized as having no grit or enforcer power the last few years, he gives us that.

Draperfan 104 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 read what i posted, this isnt a black or white matter, theres gray involved He hasnt been an enforcer, how many fights he been in?......not that many big hits either(not as much as we should expect)
Viperar 16 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 He hasnt been an enforcer, how many fights he been in?......not that many big hits either(not as much as we should expect) granted he hasnt dropped the gloves, but when has that really been needed? He threw dion down like a little schoolgirl, his pure strength manages him puck possession...and his big presence just helps in general. Granted he hasnt been EVERYTHING we could have wanted him to be, but he definately brings benefits that are noticeable.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 Just because Bert isn't and will probably never be the player he once was doesn't mean he doesn't bring assets to the table, namely: - A huge frame - Great strength - Snarl - A good offensive upside - A versatile package (few players of his stature, power, and demeanor can also claim to have really good hands) In short, he adds a nice dimension to the forward corps. Even when he's not putting up points, he can be counted on to defend our stars and make room for them, which he's done this postseason. Remember when he literally picked up Phaneuf and bodyslammed him? It didn't involve a lot of skill, but it was a very important move; after that, Phaneuf was never quite the same. gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 He's said numerous times that he's not 100% and that he won't be until he gets a couple months off to really rest his back and not be rehabilitating or trying to get ready to play. He's playing up against a wall with the Wings and you can realistically only expect so much. It was a gamble and everyone knew that and I still wouldn't say we've lost so much as people just assumed that we hit some huge jackpot when we haven't really at this point. It's all about managing the expectations which seems to not be a strongpoint for the general Wings fan...
Offsides 21 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 I thought he played pretty good...so I'm thinking that certain people need to not really take this moment to try to prove their points about Bertuzzi sucking. Also, I think that if he scores a hat trick in the next game, pummels 4 guys and births a baby it won't make a difference in certain people's POV, so I think that lessens credibility there. Behind Enemy Lines in CO 11 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 Bert is hurt. Look at the way he is skating - very vertical, very stiff. Outside of the drive towards the net at the end of the 2nd period, where he actually leaned into the defensemen he is very stiff. His back is not 100%, and that is limiting him in what he can do. Anyone who has had a back injury will tell you that it takes a long time to heal. And Bert has not healed yet. Again, just look at the way he is skating - very rigid, not fluid, coasting alot, and straight up. And skating straight up definitely affects his shot as well. Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 Then why is he playing? You asked this on the last page and I responded with this: Coming off of major surgery isn't a "dumb excuse," nor is trying to adjust to a brand-new system. 1. Because he's capable of playing and contributing. Just not to his full potential. Yet. 2. Because it's the playoffs. If you're going to ask stupid questions, at least bring new ones into the fold every now and then.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 Come on Draperfan. Nobody is saying you have to like Bertuzzi, but please, for the sanity of the forums, can you stop with the trolling already?
ttbrunke 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2007 what about cleary? Seriously, what im trying to argue is first of all, not all forwards are meant to be scoring forwards. While bert is known to sometimes have soft hands, he is considered a power forward. He is there to make room for the finesse players like dats or Z to have room to shoot. Flip played very well today, and id like to think that bert keeping some guys off him had something to do with that Cleary has been consitently good, Bertuzzi has not shown us anything yet one big hit is not consistent (by the way he was helped by franzen on that one). There are other people who aren't doing anything but they aren't getting as much time as Bert and don't think they are worth 5 mil (I know he's not costing us much, great for this year, but tell him c'ya next year even at 3m)
