Sleight 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 (edited) The Star has an article about the NHL possibly expanding to Las Vegas and Kansas City. Now I remember hearing that the Penguins might move, and I thought they said there would be no more expansion, but now I read that there might be expansion resulting in the wings moving East. The article says, "Expansion would require re-alignment with the Predators battling the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets for a switch to the Eastern Conference." Read the article here *sorry if already posted, I didn't see it anywhere* Edited June 8, 2007 by Sleight

Guest jaytan Report post Posted June 8, 2007 (edited) Expansion?! Haven't we learned anything from the disastrous '90s? I'd have to support it if they considered Portland, but if they're just going to try to pitch hockey to more non-deserving locales where nobody even plays (let alone watches) the sport, well.... Screw that. "Putting a team in Las Vegas would be disastrous for NHL" http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/223144 Edited June 8, 2007 by jaytan
drwscc 212 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Detroit will not move to the East. If Nashville is gone, they'll move Colombus into the East. If Detroit leaves the West, there will be no big draw for the Western owners to ride. The owners in the west will kaibosh any efforts to move the Wings out of their conference. Duckette 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Actually, hockey in Las Vegas has always had great turnouts! The Kings play preseason games there and they're sold out 99.9% of the time (I haven't been. The trip wasn't worth it, plus it was the Kings ) They had outdoor games during the Gretzky days and the fans would show. A market there would do well, but I don't know about people playing, just watching. But, I agree. With a salary cap that's miraculously going up and low ratings, the league needs to wait until they're no longer in a decline to add more franchises. I swear, this whole league is going to end up folding under the glorious lead of Gary Buttman

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 It would be ridiculous to expand the league considering there are already a few franchises on the brink of moving.

Duckette 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 I never knew that where do they play there? I honestly have no clue. I've only been to Vegas once and that was during my most recent move to Cali back in 2000. A few pre-season games is 1 thing, but a 82 game reg season with 41 home games is something else...IMHO Vegas is way too much a transient town; a big to expansion! Good counter point, and I totally agree. A HUGE to expansion! 30 is a good number

JayUp88 1 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 I wouldn't mind a 32 team league. If the NFL can do it, we can too. Ya i wouldn't mind a 32 team league too, i also wouldn't mind team being able to sell tickets to their games, and i would like to see more hockey in Canada............. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 I wouldn't mind a 32 team league. If the NFL can do it, we can too. Except the NFL plays one game a week and is 100 times more popular in the U.S. than hockey.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Umm try 110 times more popular than hockey Just messin' with ya Harold I thought ya might be. But you can never tell on this forum.
kylee 727 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 True but we are so darn far from the west its stupid the expansion talks are crazy! i dont know how id feel about the Red Wings in the east. but its definitely more appropriate for things like travel and the very geographic location for the Wings. Red Wings in the east does seem reasonable, but at the expense of two more teams ? canada deserves more, not kansas city.

I agree , The Wings are the main atraction in the West . there's no way that the NHL would allow them to move , expansion or not.
ChitownWingsfan 54 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 1. Expansion is such a bad idea, if it happens, I'll vomit. 2. Love the idea of a team in Portland and Vegas, no such much in KC. But again, it can't be expansion, someone needs to move. 3. Detroit to the East needs to happen, regardless of how far east Nashville or Columbus might be. And the West won't have a big draw if the Wings move to the East? Didn't the Ducks just win the Cup? If hockey is truly alive and well in Cali, they should be able to sustain it without Detroit in the West.
Seraph 240 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Portland or Seattle, gosh darn it! KC and Vegas don't seem like conventional sports markets. What other teams do they have (I wouldn't know)?! Are they doing this on purpose to have a bigger turn-out for hockey?
Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 The only thing from that article I believe to be possible/likely is the Predators moving to Canada in a few years. I can't imagine another expansion happening. No way.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 I would love the Wings to move to the East. I can tell ya one thing. If they did..they'd be in the Finals almost every year.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 Jesus Christ. Has Bettman not learned anything yet? One of his expansion teams has yet to even make the playoffs in their entire history (Columbus). Not to mention the fact that the league is so watered down right now. All expansion does is give people like Jordin Tootoo a roster spot on an NHL team. God damn it. Even if it did mean the Wings would move east, I still don't want it to happen. There are too many teams in the league right now as it is. I really almost think if he puts up two more teams, he actually thinks the ratings will go up. I'm getting vibes that that's what he thinks. I would love the Wings to move to the East. I can tell ya one thing. If they did..they'd be in the Finals almost every year. Haha, we definitly would. The East, with the exception of maybe 4 teams, is so utterly weak. vangvace 12 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 I never knew that where do they play there? The Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL play behind the Orleans casino. They're a farm club for the Flames. Side note since I brought up the ECHL... The MS Seawolves are going to start playing again this season for the first time since Katrina.

Guest jaytan Report post Posted June 8, 2007 we should have seniority over Columbus ... And all but three other teams. I wouldn't mind a 32 team league. If the NFL can do it, we can too. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted June 8, 2007 (edited) im not in favor of expansion, but there is a nice arena in Kansas City, and they used to have a team, anyone know how well it did/didnt do? Kansas City Scouts all time record: 27-110-22 This is through the 1974-1975 season and the 1975-1976 season. After that, the team moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies. All in all, the last franchise in Kansas City was a major bust. It certainly is a possibility to move back there, with a new arena, and interest from the city. Who only knows.
