GiantRobot 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 (edited) I don't know if anyone already posted this or not, but the Wings tried matching the offer that the Ducks gave Schneids, and Matt didn't give them a chance to do so. Holland was pissed because he kept trying to contact him at offer him the same amount, but he chose the Ducks right away over the Wings. Don't get me wrong. Family should always come first and I know he lives there and what not, but I think it's kind of rude that he didn't even give the Wings a chance to match it. Where did that info come from? And it doesnt even matter... the wings got better on d today, and we only spent 500k more than Schneider got to do so. If the guy didnt want to be here, he didnt want to be here. He owes us nothing as fans other than effort on the ice. The " jilted girlfriend" analogy really does seem to fit with a lot of wings fans. "But it's not fair!!!!" Getting dumped never is. The crappy thing is, there is always someone prettier out there, no matter how pretty you are yourself. Edited July 2, 2007 by GiantRobot
Statts 4 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 (edited) I don't know if anyone already posted this or not, but the Wings tried matching the offer that the Ducks gave Schneids, and Matt didn't give them a chance to do so. Holland was pissed because he kept trying to contact him at offer him the same amount, but he chose the Ducks right away over the Wings. Don't get me wrong. Family should always come first and I know he lives there and what not, but I think it's kind of rude that he didn't even give the Wings a chance to match it. Well if that is true then apparently Schneider was not interested in playing for the Wings at the same price and would have chosen to play for the ducks anyway, I’m fine with that he should do what he thinks is best for him. I for one will not loose any sleep over loosing Schneider. I think Rafalski is an upgrade anyway. But seeing Schneider regret leaving when the Wings win the cup next year will be sweet. Here is what Schneider thinks about the trade: I’m thrilled to be part of the Ducks organization, to be part of a great team and a great organization was a priority for me. I think for my family, this is certainly a top choice. I really couldn’t ask for a better outcome. I had heard a couple of rumblings about Scotty a couple of weeks ago. The thought of me to Anaheim never crossed my mind. Then Scotty first mentioned retiring, and then my name came up as somebody possibly replacing him. I wasn’t sure. I never really had any idea until this morning. When the call came in, we were very excited. My biggest priority is to win the Stanley Cup Again. In my eyes, there are three or four teams who are top contenders. I was on one last year, and now I’m on one again this year. I couldn’t ask for anything more. I don’t think there is anything more difficult than defending a championship. Every team in the league is gunning for you. I experience that in Detroit and Montreal when we won in ’93. You have to bring your “A†game every single night. Every team that plays against Anaheim is certainly ready and is worried about getting embarrassed every night. They feel like they need to send a message. It’s very difficult, in any sport. For me, coming here, it’s a great challenge, and at this point in my career, my goal is to win a second Stanley Cup. Once you win it once, the only thing you want is to win it again. I think with the group of players who are in Anaheim, it’s going to be an incredible journey the next few years. I certainly see another Cup in the future for the Ducks with the young talent they have. There was never really a decision to be made as far as our negotiations. Ken [Holland] made a lot of great overtures. They were obviously tremendous to me. There was never really a time where I thought it was a tough decision to make. We just weren’t on the same page. I feel very comfortable in the decision I made for me and my family. I hope [scotty] does not retire. I think we’re a better team with him. But if he does, more power to him. I just turned 38, but I still feel like I’m in my 20s. I love showing up to the rink every night. As far as I’m concerned, I want to play till I’m Chris Chelios’ age http://www.anaheimducks.com/press/release/...604&id=1770 Edited July 2, 2007 by Statts
FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Loved Schneider when he was with us. Probably still respect him as a player. But what a slap in the face - the FREAKING DUCKS of all teams. grrr.

RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 I don't understand some of the logic here regarding this signing. A month and a half ago when Schneider was out in the playoffs, almost everyone on this board knew and acknowledged what a big loss it was to the Red Wings. Then following the loss to Anaheim, one of the excuses used here was how not having Schneider was the difference to the power play. It seems that Schneider was very highly thought of by everyone here. Now today, just because he signs with the Ducks, he instantly becomes trash? I don't understand the people who praised him for what he did in a Red Wings uniform, but can't stand the fact that he could somehow accept a great opportunity to play at home for the Stanley Cup Champs. Schneider was a class act and a terrific player throughout his time in Detroit. He is not selfish for doing what is best for him and his family at this point in his career. I will be rooting for Mathieu even in Anaheim, because I have nothing but great memories of him in a Red Wings uniform. Regardless of these other bitter posters, you will be missed here. Best of luck Schneids! It is a big loss - but the Wings at least had a plan to replace him if he did bolt. I'm pissed he went to the Ducks of all places - but I still like the guy and I wouldn't boo him. I never felt he was truly part of the Wings core for some reason. Actually, I'm surprised we resigned him after the lockout - he was asking alot - and alot of people here questioned the signing then. I won't root for the Ducks of course, esp since they could be our new rival, which just makes it harder to swallow Scheids going there. Everyone here would be wishing him the world if it were any other team. Why didn't he go back to the Kings? they have tons of cash.....

double-d 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Every post in this thread could be taken out and replaced with this one. This is so 100% on. Total no brainer. More money to play at home on the Stanley Cup defending champs vs. less money in a town he has no personal connection to and has always been kind of the second, third, or fourth fiddle among fans. I'm not happy about this move from a personal standpoint, but if he hadn't taken it, I would question his sanity. Someone dumb enough to pass this up wouldn't be smart enough to actually want on your team. P.S. Anaheim isn't quiet close enough to Manhattan Beach to commute from, so I'm assuming a move might be in the books. Plus, I'm not sure he lived on the ocean exactly; It would take more than $5 million a year to own beachfront in CA. Long time lurker infrequent poster... I think the RW's upgraded with Rafalski. I would have loved to see him in a Ducks sweater. And this coming from a long time Ducks fan.... The Samuelis have already stated that if Scotty decides to stay on board, he is more than welcome to do so and they would cough up the cash. Thinking about the possibility of having 4 super talented D-men next season is very exciting however unfortunately,we all know which way Scotty is leaning. And no, you do not need to make $5 million a year to live on the Strand. My cousin owns on the Strand in MB and does not make near $5 million...not even $1 million. And the commute from MB to the Pond is not that bad since he will more than likely commute during the off hours...with moderate traffic he should be in Anaheim within 40 minutes max (30 if he drives like me). Who else does Burke plan on signing? I thought he was happy with Beauchemin in the top 4.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 I read it earlier on M-Live. I'm trying to find the link, but it looks like it has been taken down. I didn't read that anywhere. What I read was that Holland gave him an offer right before noon "in the fours" and they said no. He was a big loss in the playoffs but the Wings have replaced him with Rafalski. Like I said he seemed like he wanted to stay before but money, and back in cali, is what made him leave. If they wouldn't have replaced him it would sting more but I have no problem with him leaving. The last week or so I felt like he wasn't coming back.

Can you clarify for me why Scott Niedermayer would retire? I guess I haven't been paying attention since the Cup was lifted - got on with my summer...But he's only going to be 36 this coming year. Maybe he wants to go out on top? But the Ducks have a pretty good chance of repeating....I'm just curious as to what his reasons might be... Also, as for coughing up the cash if he stays - does that put the Ducks over the cap? I wasn't aware there was a luxury tax system in the NHL. Because if so, Ilitch would have not problem going over to get the guys he and Holland want on the team.... NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Seeing as I wasn't able to check the news until last night, I didn't even bother checking this thread since I knew the Wings added Rafalski in Schneids' place. However, a good portion of this thread reeks of class (sarcasm). Some of you need to grow up. Why is it so wrong of Schneider to leave to be closer to his family, and be on a cup contender that offered him more money? What a prick, huh! Get over it. Thanks for everything Schneids and best of luck.

And he would retire because of all the things you mentioned. He would be going out on top and had done everything. They do have a good chance of repeating but what if they don't and they lose in the first round his last 2 years of his contract or he gets hurt or any of that? It would nice to leave on top. There is no luxury tax. I don't know where they are in cap space.
Mickeyisms Rule! 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 I seem to remember back around 1998 when the Wings signed a defenseman away from their rival (think dog sledding). We paid him a whole buncha money and he ended up being a bust. Schneider was injured at the end of the playoffs. We don't even know how his wrist comes back next season, and the Ducks just ponied up $11 million on a guy with a monster- albeit random- slapshot with a bum wrist. Someone start sending Matty dog sledding magazine subscriptions. Rafalski is a nice upgrade to Matty. I don't see any reason for us to be angry. Go Schneids. I always hated playing against LA because of him back in the day, and now I can really watch him give the puck up to us instead of giving it away to the opposition.
