Who was most effective TALENTED in the 90s, Yzerman or Fedorov?

I'll post my thoughts later.

I mean, I don't think we would be the team we are today without either of them. But I believe in the backbone of the team, and Yzerman was the back bone. I love feds, but he was just a rib.

kindofa pointless thread to me but i'll throw in my two cents.

feds did have a hart in 94 and was a force of nature. But there are no cups without steve yzerman. don't forget in 98 he was the conn smyth winner. Plus until bowman made him a two way player he had just as much offensive upside as federov.

Is this even a question??? Steve Yzerman is the God of hockey. Need I say more?

Yzerman, was by far the best overall player since Gordie Howe to play for the Wings and in my opinion the best of all time. He was the complete package, Federov probably had move raw talent but lacked Yzerman's determination and work ethic.

There's nearly no one who will not vote Stevie on this thread-- it's kind of a duhhh, why'd you even ask?

But to get into the spirit of devil's advocacy, I'll say Fedorov, with the Russian Line (I always privately called it The Red Line, for obvious Communistic reasons). Dude DEFECTED to play here, and while no doubt some of that was money, he just wanted a better life.... but unlike most of us, he had to leave everything and everyone in his old life behind to achieve that.

Dude came to a new country in the middle of bum-f'n Amorica, had to learn a new language, AND a complete new style of playing,... AND have the Russian mob on his arse wanting their juice.... AND a beautiful teenage superstar tennis wife who had him by his proverbial Russian hammer for a season or so.

Un.Be.Liev.A.Bly difficult situation, I honestly dunno how he made it through all that, and is still producing decent hockey to this day.

Additionally: only Gordie Howe, Stevie, Nik, and Alex Delvechiio have played more games as a Wing.

(REALLY? pulled those stats up offa Wiki, they seem incredible to me- but's he's fourth in all-time offensive stats in DRW history as well)

I'll take you back anytime, Seriozhka.

poor bryce...i tried to tell u this would happen :)

yzerman...no question.

Okay, I guess it would have been more of a debate if I had asked "who was the better player." Seemingly people are leaning towards Fedorov in that regard.

...Yes I apologize, I was confusing TALENT with overall effectiveness, in which Stevie does have more effectiveness than Sergei.

Okay, discussion over, Steve over Sergei anyday, don't know what I was thinking.

BUT, new question...

Who will do better this upcoming season, Patrice Bergeron or Ryan Getzlaf? Me and Revnic are betting to see which guy will get more points.

STEVIE VS SERGEI DISCUSSION = OVER. I GOT OWNED.

Getzlaf. I think his unit will be Anaheim's first line if Selänne retires.

Fedorov was the better player. Yzerman was the more important player.

QFT and spot on.

Look, Fedorov's heart/desire has been questioned obviously time and time again in here and everywhere, but throughout his career he's been one of the more talented players out there, espeically during his prime.

There is little doubt he has/had more talent than Yzerman, but that's no knock on Yzerman obviously, hence me quoting ARice with Yzerman being the most important player to the Red Wings during his career without much question.

Sure he risked to get here, but he came to the West because he wanted loads of cash and to live lavishly. You can't defend Federov's motivation, but you can defend his playing ability.

You didn't get owned, it's just that Stevie owns ALL.

(yeah, what WERE you thinkin'? LOL)

I'll take Getzlaf, and give some points to boot-- I have a huge hockey crush on him. Don't get me wrong-- I think he played, shall I say, far closer to the line than I care for, but he was SO effective, fast, and hard, and not afraid to throw a cheap hit or two (though was there a Duck afraid of THAT, anyway?)-- just what is needed for playoffs.

HATE him. LUST him.

Hard as it may be for you to believe, people that grew up in Russia/USSR loved their country too.. maybe as much as we here in America or Canada.

Defecting meant leaving their family behind-- without knowing when they'd ever see them again (defectors' families were never issued travel permits, so it's not like they couild meet again in, say, Paris, for a lovely family hol).

Don't tell me it was all about the almighty American buck. It wasn't. Elite athletes of that time were treated like rock stars, and lived a rock star life in Russia.

It was about freedom to control their own destiny.... yes, some of that was the money, but money is about freedom too.

Fedorov Vs Yzerman

Lebda Vs Quincy

Lang Vs Drake

ZETTERBERG VS HASEK

Which one of these gets deleted while the others are allowed to stay...

Things that make you go Hmmmmm...

Oh BTW... FEDOROV was WAY MORE IMPORTANT TO THE WINGS THAN YZERMAN!!!!!

Federov was more naturally talented and athletic however Steve had limitless determination and heart.

Steve Y was a man among children. Definatly more important to the wings.

More Important .... Yzerman

More Talented ..... Yzerman

If Stevies knees had held up better , I believe he could've been 3rd/4th in scoring all time. Fedorov was nice and flashy , but so was Yzerman back in the day. Plus he did all the little things.

Yzerman. No questions asked, he was far more important to this team.

Kp (after hanging out here a while and reading your posts, I've mentally dubbed you Kip, after a favorite cousin of mine)

We're past Stevie v. Sergei.... Bryce has moved us onto Getzlaf v. Bergeron.
