Let's win it for him

Last season it was Teemu Selanne (and maybe the chance of his brother also winning the Cup got the captain Scott Niedermayer fired up).

2005-06 it was Rod Brindamour.

2003-04 Dave Andreychuk.

2002-03 might have been a rare off year.

2001-2002 Luc Robitaille & Hasek.

2000-2001 Ray Bourque.

What's the case here...?

Seems that it helps to have a proven veteran, maybe a future hall-of-famer in your team (who still hasn't won a Stanley Cup).

I've been thinking about this and maybe it does help,it's probably giving that team a great boost and even more so a common goal ,let's win it for him-mentality which unites the team.

And who will be the next ones, who'll even request a trade so they could win the Stanley Cup if it's not possible in their current team?

Teppo Numminen & Mats Sundin come to my mind.

What are your thoughts about this?

Sundin won't leave the Leafs.

Numminen would only be traded if Buffalo was way out of it, or they got a great package in return. At his age, he's still a pretty good defenseman.

I can't think of any names off the top of my head. Maybe Dallas Drake... :hehe:

I'd love to see Sundin in red and white but I sincerely doubt him ever leaving the Leafs - even if they suck, which they do. He'd be a great pick up at the deadline, physical, goal-scorer, can play both wing and center aaaand he loves to win. He doesn't have that big of a chance to win clutch games in Toronto - when do they ever play clutch games - but for the Swe national squad he's shown this ability more than once.

I'm not all that superstitious or believe that much in good/bad luck or jinkes, but to an extent I think this mindset helps some. Heck, in 2002 you could insert Yzerman in there due to how bad of shape he was in to start the playoffs, but he was still one of the best players on the ice that first round.

I think scenarios like these help you get the motivation and blood boiling to start a game in any sport, but after the first few minutes of adreneline, you got to settle down. Not play soft or slow, but play how you know you are capable of playing, in a controlled manner.

I'm afraid you're right about Mats; he'll be the honorable ship captain, & go down with the crew while in Toronto...Too bad though 'cause having Sundin on the Wings would def give us the upper hand in most games throughout the playoffs.

Agreed. He's never given any indication that he'd like to leave. The only way I'd see him leave would be if Toronto was so far out of the playoff race that it definitely wouldn't matter if he stayed AAAND they got an offer they definitely couldn't refuse - see what Nashville gave Philly for Forsberg. Can Detroit afford to give up those picks/prospects? Maybe. Will they? Nah.

While I hear what your saying, you'd almost be hard pressed not to find a player to "win it for" on every professional team in every sport. Seriously, if you wrote down every NHL team in the league, I bet you could find atleast 1 player on each team that would give a team motiviation to "win it for".

Interesting topic.

I don't think you'll see any "Win it for Bert" slogans, so it was ok we let him go.

Another player I could see getting some of that love....

Luongo - he's not old, but he's been through Hell in florida, I feel sorry for the dude. Let's get

I'm all about players who've stuck with their sucky teams through thick and thin and then finally go to a winner.

While we're at it, let's get Olli Jokinen out of there too. Has anyone ever done more with less? Maybe Ovechkin, but that's all I can think of.

If players need motivation to win the Stanley Cup, then there's something wrong with them. Many teams from past eras won mulitiple cups because they were still hungry the year after winning it, and not because of one guy that they wanted to see carry the cup. If our players need extra motivation, then we're in trouble.

mats sundin will not win a cup. It's the European curse. No euro captain has ever won a cup, they have all been NA.

If Mats hadn't had the curse of being loyal, he'd have gone somewhere.

Alas he is Mats Sundin, but at least he is happy with what the Leafs have done this summer!

Ya, you could have said that for daniel alfredson on ottawa if they would have won,

When it comes to the veterans, I'd rather have players who have shown that they have what it takes to win the Cup and have already gotten their names engraved on it. I think that if anybody still playing lacks any motivation to win the Cup at all, well, they can go play in Russia.

Steve Yzerman ring a bell?

We're talking about active players, not retired ones. Yes, Yzerman was on sucky teams here in DET for a long time. But he's gone and we've all moved on. We've also all moved on from Feds being gone. And DMac. Just check out the boards, can't you tell?? :hehe:

I say.... Win it for Feds... Since we will be getting him back at the trade deadline :)

'97 cup was win it for 3 decades worth of fans that never got to see them win it

'98 cup was win it for Vladdy K. and Sergei M.

'02 cup was win it because the uppers invested way to much in payroll not to win it!

From what I saw last year, Chelios wants to win it more than anyone, even though he already has. Probably Hasek too. Let's win it for them, so they can finally retire...

Anyway, I don't think this trying to win it for one guy thing really works. We tried to win it for Yzerman last year when everyone thought it'd be his last season, and besides Yzerman, barely anyone showed up to play.
