One Last Pre-Season Game: Leafs @ Red Wings

I was at the game tonight, and I just had to say that the schedule HAS to change. Next season. I don't care what they have to do to get it done. The atmosphere was better than any regular season game I've been to in the past few years - and the stands weren't even full - AND it was the preseason. No created rivalry here - just good old fashioned, Original Six, old time hockey. I could have closed my eyes and sworn it was 1992 the way things felt tonight.

We need more Toronto. Hockey need more stuff like this.

I thought the eight games against s***cago took care of the rivalry...... :o:ph34r:

I have to agree though, I mean, when was the last time there was a fight IN THE STANDS? The wings themselves rarely fight, and this was a preseason game. Plus, I want the Wings to come down here and play the Canes so I can actully see them live again.:thumbup::thumbup: for schedule change

You're right on.

I was just telling my friends that I wish the Wings and Leafs would face each other much more often. This whole lets face them once a year bs is ridiculous.

The Leafs/Wings game last season! (seriously, there was a fight in the stands just a couple rows below me).

yeah there WAS a fight in the stands last season during the Wings/Leafs game, that was a hockey-night-in-detroit night, I remember it.

What a great game to be at, an intense pre-season game to say the least, wont be surprised if the entertainment value of this game beats out the average regular season game. I think everyone is in agreement, we need to see more of Toronto, and the other Original 6 teams.

I've got a ton of pics from tonights game I'll post tomorrow.

wow.

these last two games of hockey against the Leafs were great, fast paced, rough, seriously entertaining stuff.

the Wings and Leafs musttt meet up more often than just once a year. Wings looked real good this pre-season.

also:

downey(#20 - never forget) andd Ellis stay (you can tell he worked out hard on his speed and skills off season, i really liked seeing that, says a lot about his character and determination to play in the NHL - looking at you Igor )

down:

Grigs - sorry friend, you just didn't impress enough to earn a spot in a crowded line up. looked quite sloppy out there.

get it together in GR and we'll see. but to be honest, what i saw was more hype than anything.

bring on the Duckiess!! (watch for elbows)

Igor took a poke (not a slug) face to face at a guy a full head taller than him. Igor isn't some feared fighter, so it's not like some goon picking on a smaller guy. If you're going to jump in and save your 6'4" 225lb teammate from a non-fighter at least spin him around and square off. Muir was in no danger from Grigorenko. Hell, Muir should have gone himself.

I guess we just have completely different viewpoints. To me, I dont care if you're a fighter or not, i get tired of seeing guys like Samuelsson and Maltby throw shots at guys and think they can get away scott free because they arent fighters. You do stuff like that you better be ready to go, especially in the closing moments of a lopsided game. Its common sense to know guys are looking for fights at that point. Maybe Grigs should have offered the same courteousness you're looking for and not hit Muir! How about shoving him and them dropping the gloves? As for the 2 game misconducts, im 99% sure ive seen double gamers handed out before. For instance if a guy laid a nasty board on someone, and then fought and his jersey came off...he'd get 2.

In years past Maltby could hide behind DMac, or Joey K; now he's gotta be a man, & fight his own battles - which he won't do...Hence his limited ice time, & effectiveness.

That's why if we're going to keep him, it would be nice to have an enforcer in the lineup. Such as Aaron Downey, for example.

Maltby is useless unless he has an enforcer to hide behind. He can still be on the PK, but other then that he really doesn't do much. That's why it would nice to have Downey on the team. Maltby can go hit and cheapshot guys like he used to, and then have Downey step in and do the dirty work.

It was with Dmac and Kocur that he played his best. Since Holland found it upon himself to extend Matlby for 3 years, at least give him the one type of player in the lineup to make him effective again.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering but wasn't there a shove or two as they skated by each other before Igor turned around and took the poke at him? And I'm guessing he would have been more prepared had Muir gone with him. Hell, that's how a ton of fights get started. Some words, some shoves, someone gets his hand up high, and then they come off. At least the natural ones and not the contrived "So we're gonna go at the drop of the puck, right? Yeah, good luck." I guess I just don't see the need for Harrison to jump in and fight what should have been Muir's battle. If we had a Boogaard and it was him doing the jabbing with Muir, then I'd understand. But not a guy like Igor.

As great as it was to see that Grigs got into a "fight", I would still prefer to see Aaron Downey signed. Grigs would probably learn more in Grand Rapids as one of their top forwards and gaining experince rather then riding the bench as a bottom level forward in Detroit.
