Howard recalled by Wings

Jimmy Howard will be with the Red Wings Friday and Chris Osgood will start in net against San Jose. Dominik Hasek is listed as day-to-day with a hip injury. Dallas Drake was put on injured reserve retroactive to one week ago, meaning that he can come off the IR any day.

Press release from the Griffins ...

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings announced today the recall of goaltender Jimmy Howard from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

In four games played this season, Howard shows a 3-1-0 record with a 3.00 GAA and a 0.902 save percentage. With a 29-save performance on Oct. 11, he became just the fourth Griffins goalie to earn 50 career wins (Joey MacDonald 87, 2002-06; Marc Lamothe 54, 2002-04; Mike Fountain 55, 1999-01).

Howard will be available for action Friday when Detroit hosts the San Jose Sharks at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on FSN Detroit.

Those numbers (coupled with the 3-1 record) suggest that Grand Rapids needs some work on their defense. The offense and Jimmy's 0.902 SV% sound like they're carrying the team.

Dom did practice today:

The Wings have just recalled goaltender Jimmy Howard from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. It's not clear yet why Howard was recalled. Dominik Hasek and Chris Osgood both practiced Thursday, but one of them must be hurting.

Agreed. Dom is fine, I saw nothing last night that would lead me to believe there is anything wrong. Good luck to Osgood, I have a feeling SJ will come out flying tomorrow night. GO Wings!!!!

Dom got plowed into in the crease last night vs. Canucks. He was bouncing around just fine during the rest of the game, but once the adrenaline wore off, it probably hurt him a bit.

Don't shoot the old man yet, he'll be OK - so don't get too excited. ;)

That sucks. I thought he kinda went down awkardly last night so maybe that was it.

Great to see Ozzie play a lot more though.

It can be awkward, when an opposing player who weighs 40 pounds more than you barrels into you, when you're on your knees in the crease. I expect that's what the problem stems from, although he seemed OK for the rest of the game.

Glad we have Ozzie, always there when we need him. :)

See BS. AKA Dom taking night off, and us needing a back up goalie without being able to send someone down. Hence Dom has inj.

Good call brother. Of course it may be due to Dom's less than stellar start to the season, the idea that if one is beaten mentally then to body is sure to follow.

I hope you're right.

Otherwise it's the second time he's tweaked something enough to miss a game, and we're only 10 games into the season. That doesn't bode well for the long haul...

you seriously think after all Hasek's been through in career that this year's start is effecting him mentally?

Caution is the name of the game, here. When we have a stellar goalie in Ozzie and a great backup-backup in Jimmy, why should Dom risk it if he's got a tweaked something-or-other.

i don't think neither is stellar, or great...i certainly wouldn't want osgood as our #1 goalie for a prolonged period of time (weather or not he has been hot to start the year)

Whew I think I need glasses!. I read thethread title and until re-read the first post I thought it said, "Hasek has hip surgery." I was about in panic mode. I was like, "OMG WTF happened!"

Anyway glad it's just an injury, and hopefully nothing too serious. Seems like lfd250 might be right.

All I gotta say:

Dom, take it easy and get some rest, man.

If he's looking ginger right now, I say play Ozzie and Howard for a while.

Let Dom more than take his time and heal up. We're well-ran enough to have the regular season be the pre-playoffs and I'm sure Kenny and Babs aren't gonna take any chances either.
