Wings don't back down anymore! Downey, Downey!

I dont want to see Downey lose his spot unless its warranted. So far, the guy's been nothing but a positive. A fighter needs to be in the lineup, I know we dont agree on that but thats how i see it. Drake is incapable of fighting, and I dont even count Lilja (sorry GMRwings ;) ). If they wanna throw in Drake -light over Kopecky, then fine. But for the sake of Downey providing what the team is missing ...it shouldnt be him as the odd man out.

I love LGW for this. The dude gets in a decent scrap and suddenly he's nothing but a positive.

Let's ignore his terrible skating, lack of any skill, and poor defensive play.

The guy is a nuisance and his one skill does not make up for the rest of his terrible play.

Geez, that description kind of reminds me of Kopecky and Lilja. Who's Downey a nuisance to? If it's the other team, then that's the point. He's certainly not a nuisance to any Wings fan but you.

im glad this thread was started.

while its still very early in the season,

with games like last night, im starting to get very excited about this team.

fighting is up,

physical play is up,

and if secondary scoring keeps up,

look out.

love how the wings have started out of the gate.

Other then his fighting, he has played well defensively, and for an enforcer, has above average skating. Nuisance? Did you miss him DRAWING a PP the other night getting Davison to throw off his gloves first? Terrible play? Nothing Downey has done has hurt us, people saying "oh his turnovers" Lilja and Sammy turn the puck over alot and it hurts us a bit more then Downeys, but no one brings it up because turnovers in the offensive zone/neutral zone dont mean much when you REGAIN the puck, which is what happens almost everytime they make them.

He has got in 2 scraps, the one agaisnt Mclauren that got the team pumped up and they went on to score 2 more goals and win the game, a fight agaisnt Davison that drew a PP and helped us continue to dominate the play.

Im not saying Downey is a good hockey player, but to say he's terrible and his play is hurting us is just stupid.

Not sure why, the past 4 or 5 games Kopecky and Lilja have been stellar.

Im sorry to say this, but if anyone should sit , it should be Hudler. He really hasnt done anything to give him more ice time over anyone . Everytime he is on the ice , someone from the other team runs him over. I know he has skill , but he looks like a pee wee player out there. Give the time to people who wont be pushed over when they have the puck . Signing Hudler to that deal was kinda useless i think , he hasnt showed me anything that warrants the ice time he gets , Prove me wrong Hudler .

Here's what i've noticed thus far this season:

1. None of our guys are hesitating to get into scrums and shove people out of our crease after whistles. Even Datsyuk and Hudler got involved last night when the Sharks started scrums after the whistle.

2. Kirk Maltby is playing far better offensively and seems to have more jump in his step than in past years. Frankly, he hasn't played this well since Mac or Kocur was in the lineup.

IMO, much of this can be attributed to Downey's presence in the lineup and to a lesser extent, Drake's.

Anybody think i'm full of crap and that maybe there's no difference at all between this year and the past couple? I'd like to know if anyone sees what i'm seeing or if i'm just seeing what I want to see.

Cheers!

GO DOWNEY!!!!

While I agree with the assessment of the team thus far, I will have to say this. I think it has a lot more to do with the group of new, tough guys than just one. Downey has added a bit of an edge, but he hasn't played much, so to give his sole credit is really reaching for it, at best. Watch Kopecky, Drake, and Ellis as well. All four guys bring some legit toughness that the Wings have lacked since Dmac was sent packing.

It's nice to see that the Wings can bite back.

Drake through his 8 games has been playing pretty awful. Downey on the other hand has been playing a bit better. So play the player who is playing better at the time. Don't buy Downey too high yet... but also do not give up on Drake already. The season is too early to be benching people.

What was the deal the other nigh in San Jose when Downey got in that fight? Anyone notice how he was patting the ref on the back and then when he got in the box, he called the ref back to give him a fist-knock high-five.

It was kinda funny, almost like they were old buddies and in on the whole thing together.

I was cracking up. Wonder what that was all about?
