Which active player will have his jersey retired?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine got in this discussion the other day about which NHL players will have their jersey eventually retired by an NHL team. Immediately I thought of Lidstrom in Detroit, Sakic in Colorado, Modano in Dallas, Sundin in Toronto, but I have to be missing some more players.

Would the Wings retire Chelios's number? Would Chicago?

Topic open for discussion.

Do we really have to discuss again?

Seriously though, we have discussed this quite a bit in the past about Wings players. In terms of other teams, it is really hard to discuss because different teams have different policies on this.

For example, probably a lot easier to get your jersey retired in Colorado than Detroit.

You mention Sundin, well, the Leafs don't retire jerseys, they do put jerseys in the rafters, but do not take them out of circulation.

Crosby. Pittsburgh thinks he's the greatest thing to skate on ice, he's already the captain...

i don't think there will be to many other than that because most of the other great players in the league have moved around to much to be retired to the rafters.

Lidstrom def will get his number retired.

I could see Dats and Z getting their numbers retired if they stay in Detroit for their entire careers and lead the Wings to a couple championships

Very, very early to thinking about Dats and Z getting their numbers retired. Neither has accomplished anything yet to warrant that type of discussion. Not diminishing their abilities, but Fedorov had accomplished a lot more here than them and no one thinks his number should be retired here.

I find you may be contradicting yourself a little as well when talking about them, but making fun of Crosby in Pittsburgh. Again, Dats and Z are great players, but you have to admit that Crosby is a pretty special player as well.

Think about this for a minute. When Dats was Crosby's age, he was 3 years away from playing his first NHL game. When Z was Crosby's age, he was 2 years away from playing his first NHL game. Prior to his 20th birthday, Crosby had won a scoring title (youngest ever in any sport), won the Hart and Pearson and had set about 9 NHL records. Who knows that the future will hold, but for him, it looks fairly bright.

I just don't think crosby should be captain...he just seems too young to have leadership skills good enough to be captain, but hey, i'm probably wrong. Theres a reason why I'm not the coach of the penguins lol

And I said maybe for Dats and Z...if they can lead us to some championships and stay with us for their careers, they might get a spot up there.

I am sorry if you feel like this topic is worn out. No one made you comment on this thread.

I agree.

Us, no. Wings are remarkably selective with that--consider that with all of our recent success, Yzerman and Lidstrom are the only ones who played a part in that likely to go up. Not that this changes that, but this kind of surprised me...

Cheli's career GP by team:

Montreal: 402

Chicago: 664

Detroit: 493 (includes this season so far)

Chicago's a no-brainer when you look at it objectively with the pair of Norrises there, first and second-team all-star selections every year, he was captain for a while, etc. Problem is, he didn't leave there on the greatest of terms (which is why we were able to get him in such a great deal) so there still might be some bad feelings there. It wasn't exactly a Bourque-to-Colorado type of thing.

While there is no doubt Crosby is a great player, it's too early to jump on the 'retire 87' bandwagon in Pittsburgh. What if he, for no reason, just starts to suck? Or leaves via free agency? Or gets traded?

i think toews and kane will be to the blackhawks what yzerman an d feds were to us...just a lil not as good

haha its way too early to be talkin about this for certain players,

you dont get your jersey retired for just having a great career or else we would see red kelly's jersey up in the rafters at the joe

In the new era of salary cap where players are by and large money first, club second, winning second, with rampant unrestricted free agency and the worst idea in pro sports called the restricted free agent offer sheet....it wouldn't surprise me if Toews or Kane end up somewhere else in 5 years. It will take a Crosby or Brodeur-like player to stick around with one club long enough to reach Sakic, Modano, Yzerman like years of service. There's just too many ways, with reduced age for free agent status and such for players to jump ship early to the next big payday.

I think only the elite of the elite will end up staying anywhere for 15+ years. I'm guessing maybe a handful of players under 25 in NHL lineups will be in those same lineups 10 years from now. :(

If players were to retire today, I'd consider all these possibilities...

- Mark Recchi with the Flyers

- Paul Kariya with the Ducks

- Saku Koivu with the Habs

- Rob Blake with the Kings

- Markus Naslund with the Canucks

- Brodeur with the Devils

- Sakic with the Avs

- Selanne with the Ducks

- Ryan Smyth with the Oilers

- Sundin with the Leafs

- Lidstrom with the Wings

- Modano with the Stars

- Alfredsson with the Sens

with the Ducks or the Jets. People forget that he started in Winnipeg.

More than likely the ducks, considering the jets arent even a team, and i dont think it would make sense to do it in phoenix

You guys are missing the boat here. Some of you are going after players that are still playing. Crosby could break a leg and never be able to play again. If you want to discuss then talk about guys that are gone that should be retired. Or why have some guys been retired at one team and not the other. ie Danny Gare in Buffalo but not Detroit.

No way Recchi, Koivu, or Smyth get their numbers retired. The Leafs don't like to retire numbers, so you can probably take Sundin off that list. All the others will probably have their numbers retired, unless they have some falling out with the organization.

Even if the Jets actually were an active team, he only played a total of not even 4 full seasons there.

I wouldn't be so sure about Koivu yet. They love him there. He won a King Clancy award for what he does locally. Plus, coming back from cancer and being their Captain for how long now? If he continues to play there and retires there, it could be a possibility. Besides, the Habs retire numbers like I ***** slap people around here.....ALL DAY BABY! :hehe:

Some markers he'll pass provided he stays healthy this year:

700+ games

400+ assists

600+ points

All as a Hab. He was their 1st round pick in 1993. And he'll only be 33 years old this season. He could have anywhere from 3-7 years left in him and a shot at 1000 career points.

I think 1,000 points is an EXTREME long shot.
