What if Hossa Were Available?

I am really hesitant to see the Wings go after any Big Name player and sign him to a long term salary until the get Zetterberg signed to an extension.

Besides, the way the Wings are playing right now, there doesn't look like there is much need to take a chance on one of these guys. I expect Holland to sit tight this year - maybe add some scoring depth at the deadline (a Calder like deal), and then focus on Zetterberg next summer.

If he keeps up this pace - he will be getting more then 6.2 mill - i'd guess closer to 7.

If the wings truly get him as a rental player for this post season, he would be on the cheap for this year and nothing says they have to sign him afterwards.

So it really wouldn't impact the signing of Zets or Lids and the salaries of Ralf and Dats would not come in to play.

what if the Wings made a three way trade with Washington and Pittsburgh receiving Ovechkin and Crosby and giving up Lilja and a 5th rounder?in all seriousness though,

if atlanta was shopping Hossa, id definitely give a look, but again, they'd want probably Z or Datsyuk in return, and you just dont do that.

What are you thinking? You want us to give our enforcer away for Crosby and Ovechkin? We already have skilled players on this team.

:D

Hossa blows. He's looked downright terrible this season. The only guy I'd even consider on Atlanta is Kovalchuk, because he's the only one who plays anymore.

That team has some major problems. Their scorers don't score, their fighters don't fight, their goalies don't stop the puck. They've gone from Divison winners in argueably the weakest division in the league to basement dwellers in one season.

i would love to have Hossa on our squad... but only after we sign all our young guys for long term deals. i dont think we should go after anyone like Hossa until we know for sure Zetterberg is locked up in Motown... id prefer to wait it out with our squad, we have an aging defense (lids and cheli have 3 years left max) and who knows if our young dmen will be NHL ready? i know quincey could play for us, but Lilja will probably be gone, Kronwall will be hurt, etc. and plus an Osgood/ Howard tandem sounds fantastic but who knows if it will work out? (osgood gets hurt and Howard cannot handle the pressure?) I'd say save the space for a 3rd/4th defenseman and maybe a legit back-up if necessary. that is all

I'm only speculating at this point as there is no proof of Atlanta shopping Hossa around.

However, the Thrashers are struggling and I don't see them making the playoffs. Also there have been unconfirmed rumors that Hossa doesn't want to resign with Atlanta because of the direction they're going in. (Hossa refused to take part in the shootout the other night against the Habs because he wasn't 'feeling it').

Saying all of that, if Hossa did want out of town and Wadell was willing to dish him off, would you want him? And if so, for how much?

Atlanta needs centres and mobile Dmen. Would you give up Filpulla and Kronwall for Hossa knowing that he'll be a UFA after the season is over?

My thoughts would be to go for it. Hossa is an amazing talent and he would help round out our scoring greatly. I can only imagine how awesome it would be to see him and Dats or Zetterberg together.

Resigning him would be the hard part. With Dats making $6.7M, Rafalski $6M and Zetts and Lids looking at around $7M per year it would be extremely tough to fit under the cap.

I would hope that if this deal were possible, Holland could convince all 3 (Lids, Zetts, Hossa) to take a minimal pay cut to get them all under the Cap. You could front load all their contracts to give them huge $$ in the first 2-3 years and then lighten up in the back half.

What are your thoughts? Who would you be willing to deal?

Would you be partial to sending Jakob Kindl off in a packaged deal? Would you deal Hudler? Filpulla? Ericsson? Etc?

No chance.
