Sean Avery

So I was watching the game on versus last night and the announcers were talking about Avery and the fact that he is a fighter who has the ability to score.

Which reminded me of all the things I said about him in posts when he was in arbitration.

I apologize for saying he was dirty, when what I should have said was he is an agitator.

Last night during the game Andy Brickley (who I have to listen to in every Bruins game) said that he liked the way Philly was playing, it makes people think twice about playing against them, and then he said Avery plays the same kind of game.

Which could not be further from the truth. I am not a fan of Sean Avery but he is not dirty like the hits Philly has laid out. And I would have thought that since Brickley saw Bergeron get his face smashed into the boards by a Philly player he would have had a negative view of the Philly team.

And then last night when Avery challenges a flyer to a fair fight and tosses his helmet, he had to motion to Richardson 3 or 4 times to dump his lid, and when the guy finally did he tried to stay as far away from Avery as possible. If you are going to play the type of Hockey Philly is playing right now you should be expecting people to want to have a go with you and then you should stick you head in the mix and take a punch or two. Otherwise clean up your game!!!!

But the point of my topic (which will probably be deleted or have no replies) is that I called Avery dirty in the old thread, he is not dirty he is on the edge of playing hard, aggressive hockey and being dirty, but he stays within the rules.

Things change, Opie. I always was mostly amused by Avery's antics. But you're right when you say he's not dirty next to some I could name. He doesn't whine and he doesn't back down. His intent is never to injure, simply to play his style and try to cause something to happen for his team. I am not a huge Avery fan, but never had that big a problem with him.

My favorite Avery-agitator moment was when then-rookie Sean skated behind Georges Laraque and said, "You can't handle me, Georges!" Laraque looked down at Avery like he was a bug, or a piece of annoying lint... :P

Always been a huge Aves fan. He's not dirty he's just an agitating, little pest. And there is nothing wrong with that! He does his job and does it well. Ever since he's toned it down he's shown that he's actually pretty damn talented as well. Atta boy, Sean.

Exactly I frickin laugh outloud everytime I see Avery say that to Laraque in Hockeytown III. video. Its so proposterous that Larague knows he's not serious but to Avery's credit, he made Laraque actually think for a moment about it.

I thought I actually saw a video from last year where Avery saw that Shanahan was about to square off with someone who would kick his ass, so Avery started a fight first with someone else to take the heat of Shanny and it worked. (Not the time Shanny actually fought Brashears). Now I can't seem to find the vid. If my memory is correct, I give huge props to Avery for that.

Your attack on Mike Richards couldnt be further from the truth. He should be fully commended for fighting Avery and taking his lid off, not criticiized. Richards not only was at the end of a shift, but had a previous gash on his head that he was trying to protect by fighting defensively. Many players wouldnt have even dropped the gloves at that point, but Richards has too much heart to turn down a challenge from Sean Avery. By the way, Richards beat Avery last year and this was a rematch...so he's hardly afraid to throw with him.

I see how what I wrote looked like I was attacking Richards, my intent was to take a shot at the Flyers as a whole.

They are playing dirty and (I didn't know the things about Richards) they were not willing to take their medicine for being dirty and cheap.

But if you are going to accept the challenge with him, do it, like Koci did with Chara. He had a broken nose and knew one shot would bust it open again, did it stop him, nope he went in there got his nose re-broke but still threw punches and did his best.

I should say though that after the way this season started I have developed a strong distaste for everything Flyer. I was not a big fan of theirs before and now I am even less of a fan.

The major difference between Koci and Richards? Richards is on the roster for his skill; fighting is a bonus. Koci is on the roster only for his fists; if he isn't willing to go he probably doesn't play.

When he played for us, part of me thought he was fun/exciting and part of me was embarassed that he was wearing our Jersey.

Overall, I think he comes off as a cocky dickhead. But, if his job is to agitate and draw penalties, then I guess that's sort of what you want in an "agitator". It's one thing to put on that act on the ice, the problem I have with Avery is he seems like he would be that way in the locker room and in real life. A dick. I don't know though, I'm not really sure what his teammates have to say about him.

Losing Avery is the biggest regret I have about the Wings right now. I guess it was one of those trades that might have been worth it at the time, but we all knew it would be nice to have him in red and white for the long term.

What eva said is right on. How can you even draw a comparison between Mike Richards and Koci? There isnt one. There is no criticism for what Richards did at all. The Flyers, if they have both Cote and Eager in the lineup, are the toughest team in the league. This notion you're claiming that theyre afraid to take their medicine is completely crazy....they have no problem whatsoever throwing down.
