Downey on Waivers

His value as an enforcer in and of itself I agree is limited, but when you couple that with a team like Detroit who desparately needs a player of that ilk, it makes a little more sense why he gets the praise here that he does.

peace,

esteef

I know. It actually makes me laugh because people falling all over themselves to praise Downey here only goes to show how desperate we are to have a Red Wings player who will muck it up.

Me, too. When I saw him go to the box on Wednesday night, I thought, "Don't give Ken Holland a reason to have second thoughts."

I'll go ballistic if they let him go and don't replace him. And I'm not talking about f**king Kopecky when I say "replace," either.

I was thinking the same. Downey goes to the box one time and its like oh s***....

The problem here is we really cant win. If Downey starts playing poorly, he'll get sent down. If he continues doing a sound job and getting compliments from Babcock, eventually a team WILL pick him up if he continues going on waivers. Some team will say "hey, if this Downey is good enough for the Wings, maybe we should give him a place here on our 4th line". So really either way, the outcome will probably end up bad! Most, if not all teams already have a main fighter. But injuries happen all the time, and all it takes is that one team to decide they need another fighter and its bye bye Aaron. And you damn well know we wont replace him, so thats another reason why many of us are in such support of him.

Good post Lou.

We do still have Drake, but he's totally useless with a shield on. I wish the Wings would keep Downey in the lineup until he get's that thing off.

Babcock was quoted a few days ago in the paper saying that Drake wasnt expected to be a regular for the first half of the season. The way it sounded was him saying this was the thought process when he was first signed, but i happen to think its just Babcock's way of nicely putting that Drake is pretty useless with a cage on. I really expect him to be scratched alot, with Downey's real competion being Kopecky and Ellis right now.

Oh, and also i dont know if you heard, but in the same article Babcock said Kopecky was scratched the other day because "he needs to play tougher". If only he'd have been coming on LGW Babcock wouldve figured this out alot sooner! ;)

I actually wouldnt be surprised to see Kopecky attempt to fight the next game he plays. Well wait...i'd still be surprised, but i wouldnt be on the floor having trouble breathing surprised.

I just read the interview with Downey in this morning's Detroit News (it's linked on the top of the forum page here, "Downey takes one for team"). Man, I love his attitude. No wonder guys love having him (and players like him) in the clubhouse.

Lou, you need to start predicting more fights for the Wings. :P

I'm surprised... we're currently sitting at 6 fighting majors this year (Drake has 3, Downey has 2, Kopecky has 1). Last year we finished with 10 all together. I hope this keeps up, because I'm tired of the Wings finishing dead last in that catagory every year.

Yeah, really Lou. My predictions this year have been horrible so far. Each time I predict that Lilja will murder someone, it doesn't happen. However, I don't see too many fights happening anymore for either Drake or Kopecky, so unless Downey gets a lot more games, we will finish dead last.

When Kopecky starts getting scratched, when Babs finally gets tired of Lilja, and when Drake loses the face mask, they'll be getting in some fights.

I don't see how this is going to improve anything. You're crazy if you think Meech is going to fight.

If the Wings called up Brad Ference from GR, you'd see a lot more fights. Although this guy is literally a punching bag, he still drops the gloves quite a bit. He'd be nice to have up here, because he'd actually provide some solid grit on the blueline, and he'd show a willingness to drop the gloves.

I phrased it wrong. Remeber when Lilja was getting scratched alot last year? Then he decided to hit and fight? Yeah well, I want that to happen again. I wouldnt be against calling up Ference, he's bigger and tougher then Lilja, former 1st rounder, we're good at turning them back into good players (See avatar :P)

Lilja was getting scratched last year because the Wings had Markov. Now, the only other defenseman on the team is Meech. It's either him, or a callup for GR.

As you've seen, I do not think very much of Derek Meech. We already have Lebda playing the role of small, non-physical, offensive minded defenseman on this team, so why bring on another to do that? The Wings have enough small players 2 inches or more below 6'0, they don't need another one.

I would like a 4th line consisted of Drake/Kopecky/Downey.. that would be SIK. no1 would wanna mess with that line. because 1 will make you cry, one will smash you then run away real quick, one will smash your face into the glass and laugh in your face. no1 would want to touch that.

And for Lilja, Id rather package Lilja and Kronner, for a big tough Defencemen. who will drop the gloves the way Downey does. but still is responsible with the puck and isnt a bone headed dingdong

Who cares? Lilja is a ***** ass ****** who plays with no heart.. Meech has solid offence ability and still plays a good defensive game, and small body or not, he gets the job done.

We still may not actually past 10 fights. Kopecky might be good for one more down the line, and Lilja is no given to even drop 'em once. I dont know how long it takes a face to heel to the point you can take punches, but i'd imagine it'd be a pretty long time for Drake. Now its looking as if Downey will play very sparingly, and i have a feeling he wont even be here in another 2 months. If theres some injuries and Downey can start playing more regularly, then we'll smash it for sure.

Alright, i'll take a shot and see how it works out. Lilja will fight DJ Ki.......nah better make that Mayers next game.

On third thought....better make that David Backes.

I don't like Lilja either. I couldn't believe the amount of people who were riding his coattails earlier this season, when really, he has done nothing special. He played absolutley terrible in last nights game, and has never really been very good in any given game this season.

If he's going to be replaced (which I highly doubt, because Babcock loves him), I'd rather have it be for someone physical, though. Perfect example: Brad Ference.

I really don't like Meech. If the Wings dump Lebda, then fine, play him. But until that happens, I really don't want him play that much. He is better than Lilja, I will say that, but I highly doubt Lilja is going anywhere until seasons end. Babcock likes him for some reason.

On third thought....better make that David Backes.

I'd go even lower than that. Make it Eric Brewer.

Yeah I thought about Brewer, but i like the odds better going with a forward vs a defenseman as its more likely to happen. Plus Backes has fought 2 dmen so far this year, so i gotta go with it! Lilja vs Backes...take it to the bank! (if hes not playing then he'll be Mayers punching bag)

I wouldnt mind that either, im not completely sold on meech, but he is an upgrade over Lilja, small or not. Id much rather have a big physical D-MAN other then Lilja, but what can you do, you work with the scraps you are givin. If Ference gets a chance, i think that would rejuvinate his career like we did with cleary another former 1st rounder.

Its far fetched but you never know. we gotta face reality, Lilja is here to stay this year, maybe babs can put a fire under his tooshi like he did with kopecky and rex.

Poor old Lilja is gonna get his ass beat tonight if he takes on Mayers.

Lilja's only chance would be to throw a couple shots then shoot for the bearhug and drag him down...basically what he tried with Moen only not look like as much a wuss doing it would be the goal :D

Oops...Backes is out! Guess im stuck with Mayers now.

I don't think Lilja has the you know what to take on someone like Mayers.

I'd be very surprised to see anyone fight in the game. The Blues have a ton of fighters, but the Wings don't. With Samulesson out tonight it would have been a perfect game for Downey, but obviously team management and coaching felt otherwise.

Not expecting much tonight... but... Lou, you did predict a fight... :P

Lou, I'm not very fond of the lack of support that you're showing for our enforcer. In fact, you jinxed him into being scratched for the game.

You need to stop being so confident in Lilja. Every game this year you predict him to be in a fight... and... well... he hasn't even came close to doing that. :P

Luckily for Lilja, Sharp is coming up on the schedule again
