Greatest Sports Movie

Recommended Posts

While it is up there with the greatest sports movies, I am not about to crown this one #1. Hoosiers or Rocky IMO, is worth of being the greatest sports movie.

Hoosiers or Rocky? Rocky is a joke, not even close to real boxing. As for hoosiers, come one, i've seen better acting from my sister on christmas morning when she didn't get the barbie she wanted. I wouldn't say Slap Shot is the best, but in my top 5, which include:

Miracle

Invincible

Mystery Alaska

Major League

I know that some would argue that field of dreams or friday night lights fits in the somewhere, but really i'm not into kevin costner portraing a guy in midlife crisis or billy bob trying to be a coach of a damn high school team.

Mystery Alaska?? You got to be kidding me. Like the NY Rangers are going to play a team in Alaska. Zero chance of that ever happening in real life.

I will agree with you on Miracle and Major League as being good sports movies. Invincible I didn't see.

Caddyshack is my favorite sports movie ever.

according to ESPN, here are the top 25 sports movies by a panel and internet users.

I always have a hard time classifying movies into genres. Would Raging Bull be a sports movie? How about The Hustler? If the answer to both is yes, then I'd put those at number 1 and 2. Most of the other movies that are considered great sports movies are like kids movies to me, at least compared to the serious ones. Slapshot I'd definitely consider a sports movie, and would put it somewhere near the top 5.

Has anyone seen 'Maurice Richard'?

I have. It was only ok,but I think I had my expectations too high in the first place.

Reminder to myself: Watch it again.

I don't think I've ever seen a hockey movie that would suck BIG TIME. I admit that the Mighty Ducks and Slapshot 2 with Stephen Baldwin weren't that great but still they were about hockey.

And not some forbidden romance in the 17th Century.

There's a huge difference between what you personal like and what is considered "good". Like the saying goes, "there's no accounting for taste"

Miracle? Laughable

Invincible? Decent only because some pretty good actors helped carry it

Mystery Alaska? Show me a single critic that would call this movie "good"

Major League was great because nobody had seen anything like it before and it was just hilarious. But funny doesn't make a good movie.

Any number of baseball films would be on any critics best sports' films list along with Hoosiers.

None of the movies you picked would be on such a list.

I'm a pretty big fan of most sports movies...you could technically call "Seabiscuit," "Varsity Blues," "The Cutting Edge," "Blades of Glory," and seriously one of my favorites "Cool Runnings," sports movies, right? Speaking of hockey movies.....How about "Youngblood", bad acting and all?

Two words- Slap Shot. Best sports movie ever made. All the other movies are OK. But the Hansons Bros. Kick ass.

"Im stinkin s*** face, my wife louise left me, and that son of ***** over there keeps playin me,when he knows Im stinkin s*** face. Anyone throws me against the boards Im gonna piss all over myself".

"Im gonna open this ****** bath robe and wiggle my dick at em. No you wont. Yes will joe and you wanna know why, cause I want you to have heart attack and die so we never have to do this s*** again. You and your f***in fashion shows".

Miracle and Bull Durham are probably my top two.

It's hard to deny Miracle IMO. The 1980 Olympic hockey team is the reason why I'm a hockey fan, and that movie is so well done.

Bull Durham is hilarious and what guy wouldn't want to date Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy.

I need to watch Slap Shot again. It's good and all, but it doesn't stand out in my mind.

WOW!!! I didn't think I would start such a debate...

Slap Shot is my favorite FUNNY sports movie of all time, with CaddyShack a damn close second.

For a serious sports movie: The Natural really, really impressed me when I was kid....

The reason I put this up in the 1st place is that Slap Shot is one of those movies that I can quote almost word for word start to finsih, and laugh my ass off everytime. I have the DVD and always pop it in after pick up hockey to wind down before I go to bed. The fashion show scene ALWAYS makes me laugh out loud!

Why is slap shot great? because it's one of the few sports movies not to over dramatize sports. yea, sports can be exciting, and i've had some amazing moments in my life because of them: like being part of world cup and european championship celebrations.. there is nothing like it in the world, and I remember all the wings victories and going to the parades.... but I hate the sappy "oh look how much we've overcome as a team.. and now we won the championship against our rivals" motif (ala' the mighty ducks crap). Slap Shot just has the greatest satirical championship win in the history of film with the stripping.

by the way, you can't classify baseball movies as sports movies, baseball is a game not a sport. and yes, when i put mystery alaska on my list, now that i think about it, that movie was ok, but not top 5... a good sports movie is the one that depicts the sport the best, not has a good story line... this would shorten the list a bit....

I would definitely refrain from saying Slapshot is the best sports movie of all time, I would definitely say it's the best comedy in the genre though and probably top 10 though for me.

I personally think boxing movies has highlighted the big screen better than any other sport and I'm not just talking about any of the Rocky movies either.

Raging Bull (probably my number 1,) Cinderella Man (How has this movie not been mentioned yet in this thread?) and ****** (might be a bit liberal in calling it a boxing movie, but I'm counting it.) All top 5 for me. Friday Night Lights (one of my favorite soundtracks to any movie ever) and Field of Dreams also probably round out my top 5.

Well Frei might not be right with his comparison of Slap Shot to Rocky. It's on par, I don't know about better. Slap Shot is definitely better than Million Dollar Baby. That movie was overrated!

As far as that list. I don't know if Jerry Maguire should be categorized as a sports movie. My sister and I are in agreement. It's a chick flick, not that's there's anything wrong with that.

Honestly, Miracle was one of my favorite movies of all time. So I would have to nominate that for one of the best sports movies. I love that flick.
