mad dingo 6 Report post Posted November 30, 2007 I'm a pretty big fan of most sports movies...you could technically call "Seabiscuit," "Varsity Blues," "The Cutting Edge," "Blades of Glory," and seriously one of my favorites "Cool Runnings," sports movies, right? Speaking of hockey movies.....How about "Youngblood", bad acting and all? Youngblood rocks! Best Ending Ever!
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 I like some parts of Slapshot...but overall i really dont care for it much. The scene with the one dude skating around and stripping down is so stupid and not funny i feel embarrassed for even having it on. Didnt like Miracle much either. I'd have to go with Rocky....with part II having always been my favorite of them all. If, for whatever reason, we decide to count poker then i change my pick to Rounders. T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 This is all you need t know when it comes to sports movies: 1. Slap Shot 2. The Longest Yard 3. The Bad News Bears (original ,of course) 4. Mystery, Alaska 5. We Are Marshall The openning scene in Mystery Alaska as the kid is skating the river. The openning line from the little kid as Russel Crowe's Bronco won't start. Some good skatin' and beautiful slapshots in that movie. And for a Kiwi, he skated half way decent.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 Slap Shot is probably the best hockey movie ever made, with Miracle coming close second (all depending on what you're into at the time). However, Slap Shot, greatest sports movie ever? There has been way too many good boxing, football, and baseball films for that to contend with. And oh ya, the best sports movie is Raging Bull people, get it right.

Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted December 1, 2007 MIRACLE. Also, for regular sports, not hockey: Remember the Titans I can't understand why people think Miracle is so great. As a hockey fan, sure I love any movie about hockey. But as a fan of cinema, critically, its just not a very good movie. A journalism friend of mine from college once coined the phrase 'entertaining garbage'. That's what I think of Miracle. Not a great film but as a fan of hockey I can watch it and enjoy it thoroughly. If you want to see a great story watch the documentary about this. Its a much better piece of work IMO. I'm not sure where you can get it but HBO has aired it several times in the past years. BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 It's pretty tough not to like a movie with Kurt Russell. He was the guy who could have made or broke the movie as a whole. He played Herb Brooks the way Herb Brooks should have been played, an intense and committed coach with one option and that was to win, and he played it to a tee. I don't know, I like movies a lot myself, and to be honest, I don't normally like sports movies because of the typical endings... A team scores in the final seconds of a game to win, after such a horrific season, blah blah blah, I always find sports movies pretty cliche. This one was different, the hockey scenes were as realistic as the creators could possibly make them, and that's another thing that made this movie great. You knew exactly what was going to happen at the end of Miracle, but the steps it took to get there was the best thing about the movie. How Herb Brooks heavily disciplined his team. Aside from movies like Remember The Titans, Raging Bull, and maybe a few others, this movie didn't follow the ordinary sports movie cliche like other sports movies do. Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 (edited) I gotta go with my biased hockey opinion on this one and say Miracle. Not only recreates the US games, but also tells the behind-the-scenes story of the team. That scene where Herb Brooks makes the team do suicides after playing a lackluster game just shows how dedicated he was to instilling discipline into his players. Maybe NHL coaches could try doing that. Like Herb said, "You guys don't wanna work during the game? No problem, we'll work after." Also, a very close runner up is Remember the Titans. Just about anything Denzel Washington does is gold...this movie is no exception. One of those movies that you walk out of feeling great. Dano33 41 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 Why would ESPN put "Searching for Bobby Fischer" on there? Since when is chess a sport? I was under the impression that it took absolutely no athletic talent to play a board game.
larionov_8 12 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 I've got a soft spot for the funny one's like Major League. But kids sports movies are among the classics. Mighty Ducks was great to watch as a kid, but even better is a film like The Sandlot, that I can still watch now and enjoy.

None of the other films most people have talked about are considered some of the best movies of all time. But good luck convincing that to the younger posters. USAFWingedWheel 4 Report post Posted December 2, 2007 how can Rocky be a great sports movie, it doesn't even depict the sport proplerly. Boxing is a game of strategy not a slugfest like rocky. Rocky was a alright movie, but a crappy sports movie. but i do agree that "any given sunday" was good, showed the good and bad of football.

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted December 2, 2007 Ive always loved Rocky not necessarily for the boxing scenes, but for the rest of the movie. Yeah the fights are ridiculously over the top (Sly pun obviously intended!), but that doesnt matter to me.
