Here's a quote on a "two for one" signing, from a blogger at TSN: "Ken Holland locked up Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk for less per year than the Caps paid for 'Alex the Great.' " I like that last sentence. As much as he has gotten dogged in here for not consistently signing "toughness" or a "tough guy" or that he shouldn't be given at least some credit for contributing to low draft picks working out in recent years (maybe not actually going out to get them but keeping them with the Red Wings long term), and while I definitely respect the opinions of plenty fans in here, when you have major NHL sources and outlets saying he's one of the best present-day GMs out there, I'm taking the opinions of those sources over the people in here on this one. Ok so that statement is inaccurate then, but saying that Holland is one of the best current-day GMs in the league in managing under a salary cap is accurate. Booster313 138 Report post Posted January 12, 2008 I am not taking anything away from Holland, obviously he has done a great job, but I think that Mr. I's commitment to winning prior to the salary cap created the culture that the Wings have had for the last 10-15 years or so, and that culture is what makes Detroit such a desirable place to play for players, that and the loyalty that the team has shown to past players, those who retired with the team, left because of injury, or simply needed to revive their career.
