Looking for a veteran D-man...how about Danny Markov?

This just struck me a few minutes ago. The biggest problem here is obviously his contract status with Dynamo Moscow. He signed a 2 year contract with Dynamo and I have no idea if it has an out clause or not. But now that it is later in the season, Kenny might be willing to give him close to the money he wants. We're still a good bit under the cap. And the most important thing is that we wouldn't have to give up a draft pick or prospect. I liked him a lot when he was with the Wings last year and I was a bit disappointed they didn't sign him again. If there is a way to get him, I'd be all for it.

Out clauses are not necessary between the NHL and Russia - there is no agreement so the players can really come and go as they choose.

With 5 million under the cap, I want to trade *nothing* for a rental player and simply sign Forsberg and Markov. We can afford it, they could both potentially help this team a lot and at worst -- it's Illitch's pocket book, nothing else.

This is very good... in theory.

Markov is a solid stay-at-home defenseman, with a mean streak who played a lot with Lidstrom. Perfect for DEPTH on defense, which is what hurt the Wings the most last April.

Wouldn't someone have picked him up by now if he were willing to play?

I find it surprising that the Wings wanted to keep Markov, couldn't agree on a contract, and no other NHL team signed him.

I would think there would be teams who would pay through the nose for his services. He would definitely bring stability to a second defense unit.

How about bringing back Dandenault?

He's not getting the ice time in Hab Land, & has been scratched a few times by Carbo...Plus he's French-Canadian which is a must have for a Stanley Cup!

wrong Markov there.

I still contend our defense isn't tough enough. If we had signed markov for a 3.5-4 million deal for a year we would

1) not have to give up prospects at the deadline for a physical d man

2) not have to pay a ridiculous salary(especially in blake's case)

3) have the best D in the league by far

ov-ver-rat-ed

clap, clap, clap clap clap

Seriously, Markovs physicality has been overrated since he came here. I know it would be nice that Detroit doesnt have to give up anything, but Id really like to see a guy who plays a bona fide physical stay at home game.

I think you and I are the only ones who realize this.

I'm not asking for Konstantinov... I just want someone who is responsible defensively, can log good minutes and is not going to get run over, or knocked off the puck like some of our smaller defenseman are. Markov fits that bill nicely and we would not have to trade a damn thing for him.

If getting him out of russia is difficult, by all means make the effort. I would much rather have him than lose a single draft pick for a Blake or Foote.

I'm not totally against this, just don't know how hard it would be to get him to come over. He does fight though...and hit HARD!

peace,
