Could Detroit trade Z?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

i cant imagine the Wings without Zetterberg

just because currently he has a little back flare up doesn't mean he deserves without a doubt, top dollar amount and length on his up coming contract.

Deserve it yes without a doubt, problem being wings cannot afford that. Because fair market Value for him would be close 9 mil like a guy like AO, Crosby, Thornton, etc. deserve. But what did Crosby and Thornton take to stay with their teams and help their teams build?

HUH!?!?!?!? They took less money, Z says he wants to stay and would take a home town discount, but I heard the same thing From Pedro Martinez and Johnny Damon, Where are they now? That is right both are in NY!!

...no, there will be NO contract waiting for him on July 1st 12:01AM...

...I don't why everyone thinks Hank will be a UFA this summer. He won't be a UFA until 2009! I see everyone on here, including the most knowledgable of users saying stuff like "Holland will have to save money for Hank this summer" and words to the like. The opening poster said he hadn't heard anything on contract talks, ARice (very knowledgable) answered that Holland cannot begin talks until July 1st. Then NFM25 posted the above quote. 2009 guys! Oh and BTW the rule is you cannot start negotiating until the FINAL YEAR of the contract, so in essence on day one of the 2008-09 season Holland and Zetts can open up talks and get a deal done before he becomes a UFA. Remember when Fedorov turned down Hollands contract in December of 2002 after his divorce and hiring of a new agent? He became a UFA July 1st 2003. I know this is not a huge deal, but for some reason when it comes to Hank, everyone has a brain fart over and over again about his contract...

...he is signed until 2009, it's right on this website for all to read! http://www.letsgowings.com/insider/capchart.php

ACK! Yeah, you're right.......its one of those UFA brain farts. People probably make the quick mistake because UFA's can sign with anyone on July 1st. As a result people have this mythical idea that that's the date in time when the new season begins and GM's can start renegotiating with players that are contracted through the coming season.

People are basing it off of the fact that other players have signed early, or a lack of hockey knowledge.

Based on the fact that they signed Dats relatively quickly and the fact that offer sheets(granted down the road) can scoop up coveted players, I want it done as soon as possible, which would be 7/1/08 12:00:01. Will that happen, most likely not, I doubt he takes their first offer, there will be meetings and negotiations up until probably the following January (much like Dats).

Holland will (technically) have to save money this summer, because anyone he signs this year will impact the ability to sign him during the year or the next off season. For example: if for some unbelievable reason Holland gets Hossa at the deadline, then this offseason he is looking to sign Hossa, he has to weigh the options a)pay Hossa a lot this summer and lose Z next year or B)not pay Hossa and retain Z.

I know that was what I referenced in saying they need to save money to sign Z, not necessarily this summer but this summer Holland needs to save money (in cap space) to sign him next year.

Not sure if that made any sense at all!

Not even for Crosby or Ovechkin? Wow. I love Z too but Ovechkin? That dude is the sickest of the sick. And he's what, like 21 years old or something. Ridiculous.

yeah cause i can see Washington shipping Ovechkin and his 13 year contract over here, or Pittsburgh parting ways with Crosby.

including those two players in even theoretical trade talk just seems to be a way for you to argue with people.

Has anything been mentioned about contract talks? Could his back issues be a turn off for a long extention? Holland has been saying he has some tough decisions to make.

That might not be a bad idea. If they do, the Wings better get the world for him.

Let's look at this with some logic, there are really only a handful of players in the league you could consider on the same level as Z or possibly upgrades those players are:

Crosby

Ovechkin

Heatly

Kovalchuk

Lecavalier

and if you want to include goalies:

Luongo

Brodeur (age would be a factor)

Kiprusoff

Nabokov (He's good, but being one of the greatest remains to be seen.)

I don't see any of those players moving anytime soon, nor do I see an advantage for either team really...so the answer is no.

Could he be traded? Sure, anything is possible

Will He? Doubtful.

I wouldnt cry if we shopped him around for a big time return though. His random back spasms are getting kinda annoying.

You left a couple out, don't worry I got the point though.

A little more Theoritical Logic for the both of you:

Follow along closely this may get confusing because the day I read it, it sure as hell confused me.

Mind you this is pre-Crosby pre-Ovechkin

Joe Thornton From Boston to SJ for

Marco Sturm

Wayne Primeau

Brad Stuart

Not exactly Zetterberg for Ovechkin is it!!!!!!

The point ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE especially in a salary cap world!

The Wings are built on a loyal, familial dynamic.

Hank is the future of the Wings, and is already one of the top players in the league, period.

Hank has said he doesn't want to go anywhere else.

Do the math.

Dude,

Joe T wanted nothing more than to be a Bruin his entire career, so he said. His heros are guys like Sakic, Yzerman.

Z may say in the media that he wants nothing more than to be the next Steve Yzerman, Nick Lidstrom, but what he says and what happens are two different things especially with the salary cap. He may say he is willing to play for a discount but what if to him a discount is 8.5 for 7 years. The wings think he should get 7 for 7 (completley hypothetical) the two realize at about Jan next year that there is no way he is coming back. You mean to tell me that because the wings were built* on loyalty and family dynamics before the cap that he two parties will find middle ground.

None of us are saying that we want Z traded, but it is a possibility, so for those of you who have nothing better to add to the thread than

The op is on crack Z is a red wing 4 life

think it terms of the average athlete and pro organization:

Loyalty is a great way to take media pressure off of you.

Again I restate:

Johnny damon and Pedro Martinez said they would not leave Boston after their contracts, that Boston was their home. That a home town discount would be given to the Red Sox, and then went to the Highest bidder promptly right after. One of them went to the ultimate of enemies.

There is no longer loyalty in pro sports!!!!!

If their was their would be no need for free agency!

Again no one is saying they should or will get rid of Z, but he is a free agent in a year and a half and as stated is one of the top talents in the league, those guys are hard to keep around on the cheap. He will easily get an offer for over 8 for more than 7 years from another team, if not more. For all of us fans to assume he should play for less considering he is one of the elite players in the game and is currently severely underpaid. You don't think he wants a little bit more money and maybe a long term deal for security.

Remember he is getting serious with his G/F and now will have to consider what he may have for a family in 5 years!

* by definition of the word built it would have to be past or future tense, been built or to be built, they can't be in the process of built! And when they were built they didn't have a player leave to ANA for simialr money!

Thornton =/= Zetterberg

Thronton's situation =/= Zetterberg's situation

Bruins =/=Wings

Wow that made things so much clearer, I have no idea why I never thought of that logic.

Those are nice red sunglasses, BTW.
