WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 (edited) Quick look at the former 1st rounders on each teams roster at present time... ANA - 10 ATL - 7 BOS - 7 BUF - 6 CAL - 10 CAR - 10 CHI - 11 COL - 5 CBJ - 9 DAL - 7 DET - 2 EDM - 10 FLA - 10 LA - 8 MIN - 7 MON - 7 NAS - 7 NJ - 5 NYI - 6 NYR - 7 OTT - 10 PHI - 14 PHX - 8 PIT - 14 STL - 11 SJ - 8 TB - 3 TOR - 9 VAN - 10 WAS - 11 I have actually always wondered this but have been too lazy to go through and figure it out. Really proves which team has the best scouting in the league and who has the worst. What's everyone's opinion on our lack of 1st rounders? Can we keep surviving with steals? Or do we really have scouts who are that much better? Edited February 1, 2008 by WhiteLightning91

We also have several 1st rounders that will be every day guys within the next 5 years, keep that in mind... but yes, Kenny and the boys are really just that much better! puckbags 863 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 It would be nice to have more solid first rounders but if I'm correct there have been years where we havent even had a pick in the first round. I think our late round steals of Dats and Z more than make up for the lack of 1st rounders!!
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Kind of reflects how many first rounders the Wings actually use instead of trading away.
Grittzkey 1 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Good thing the amount of 1st rounders has nothing to do with success. or else we'd be screwed
thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Nick is, well... Nick Nick is Nick... but he's also a third round draft pick. Just more proof we have excellent scouts.

ruarc' 2 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 (edited) Went back the past ten [edit: 11] drafts and this is what I've come up with... 1997 - No first 1998 - Jiri Fischer 1999 - No first 2000 - Niklas KronWall (not KronVall) 2001 - No first 2002 - No first 2003 - No first 2004 - No first 2005 - Jakub Kindl 2006 - No First 2007 - Brendan Smith Take it for what it's worth. It's unfortunate what happened to Fisch. I absolutely loved the guy. Holland and company did the rest of the league a favor in dealing those firsts. Could you imagine? Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 2, 2008 It's also funny that only one of those two players were actually Wings draft picks. Cleary was a 1st round pick, but he wasn't selected by Detroit.

I'm too lazy, but someone should go through those #1 picks that Detroit traded away to see who was essentially traded for. Just a though.

Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 2, 2008 1997-Nikos Tselios (with Tselios pronounced the same as his cousin Chris Chelios) (Carolina) 1999-Steve McCarthy (Chicago) 2001-Adam Munro (Chicago) 2002-Jim Slater (Atlanta) 2003-Jeff Tambellini (LA) 2004-Mike Green (Washington) 2006-Chris Summers (Phoenix) Interesting list there. The only real noteworthy player on it is Mike Green, who has established himself as an outstanding defenseman. Teslios and Munro were both huge busts. McCarthy is still in the NHL, but isn't all that great. Slater is an ok checking line player. Tambellini seems to be stuck toiling in the minors, so the jury is still out on him. Summers is very young, and still playing College hockey, so he's a ways off. Out of that list, I'd take Green, and possibly Slater, Tambellini or Summers. All in all though, it doesn't really look like much translated from those picks.
