Worst Trade in NHL History?

Recommended Posts

I can't really think of a true #1 worst, but there are definitly some bad ones. Here are some that come to mind:

1996: Pittsburgh Penguins trade Markus Naslund to the Vancouver Canucks for Alek Stojanov (loser: Pittsburgh)

1996: Montreal Canadians trade Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche for Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinsky, and Andrei Kovalanko (loser: Montreal)

1990: Detroit Red Wings trade Adam Oates and Paul MacLean to the St. Louis Blues for Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney (loser: Detroit)

1992: Quebec Nordiques trade Eric Lindros to the Philadelphia Flyers for Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon, Kerry Huffman, two 1st round draft picks (which became Jocelyn Thibault and Nolan Baumgartner), and $15 million in cash (loser: Philadelphia)

2005: Boston Bruins trade Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks for Brad Stuart, Wayne Primeau, and Marco Sturm (loser: Boston)

1986: Vancouver Canucks trade Cam Neely and a 1st round draft pick (which became Glen Wesley) to the Boston Bruins for Barry Pederson (loser: Vancouver)

There are plenty of others as well. I'll post some more later.

Winnipeg Jets trade their third-round pick in that year's draft to Montreal for journeyman defenseman Robert Picard; The Canadiens used the pick to draft Patrick Roy. (loser: Winnipig)

Florida Panthers trade Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek, and a 6th round draft pick to Vancouver for Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen, and Alex Auld. (loser: Florida..big time)

Chicago trades Dominik Hasek to Buffalo for Stephane Beauregard and future considerations (loser: do I even have to say?)

Winnipeg Jets trade Teemu Selanne, March Chouinard and a 4th round pick to the Ducks for Chad Kilger, Oleg Tverdovsky and a 3rd round pick. (loser: Jets)

Red Wings trade 4th round pick for Cory Cross (loser: kenny)

Didn't we get Draper for a dollar? That's pretty bad, but I think the Lindros trade will go down in history as the worst ever, barring some sort of madness in the near future... and given how dumb GMs have been getting lately, I'm certainly watching carefully.

The "Sundin Trade" that may happen in the near future has some potential. Especially if he goes back to TO after the post. Some GM throws 2 players, a prospect, and a couple picks to the Leafs because he thinks Mats will put his team over the top and 3 years later he would do anyting to take it back because he gave up a Zetterberg, Lidstrom, or Roy in the draft; and to top it off Sundin is back in Toronto.

The Lindros debacle is in a league of its own...Although no s***ty trade discussion would be complete without mentioning Ron Francis/Ulf Samuelsson for John Cullen/Zarley Zalapski...destroyed one franchise and brought 2 Cups to another.

The Lindros trade probly does it - hell, Lindros for Forsberg straight up would favour QUE/COL

But one that hasn't been mentioned and is always a favourite of mine is Alexei Yashin for Zdeno Chara and a 1st (Jason Spezza).

Steve Yzerman to Ottawa for Yashin...

thank god that one never happened.

The proposed deal i remember hearing was Yzerman for Stanislav Neckar (which is MUCH worse)

Detroit trades Klima, Sharples,Graves and Murphy to Edmonton for Carson, McClelland and a 5th-round pick

The "best" part about that trade is that happened not long after the Federko trade. In two fell swoops Oates, Klima, and Graves were gone for a bag of pucks.

Some of the worst deals in recent memory that haven't been mentioned:

Detroit trades Tim Cheveldae and Dallas Drake to Winnipegfor Bob Essensa and Sergei Bautin.

Montreal trades John LeClair, Eric Desjardins, and Gilbert Dionne to Philadelphia for Mark Recchi.

Also,

The Hasek trade in 1992 went like this:

Winnipeg trades G Stephane Beauregard to Buffalo for C Christian Ruuttu and future considerations.

Chicago trades G Dominik Hasek to Buffalo for G Stephane Beauregard and future considerations.

Chicago trades G Stephane Beauregard to Winnipeg for C Christian Ruuttu.

It was drawn out over the course of two months but ultimately might be the only three way deal in history where one team ended up with what they started with.

And it can't really be called a bad deal, and here's why: Chicago had Ed Belfour, who won the Vezina in 1991 and would win it again the next season. They traded their backup goaltender, who didn't really play well in Chicago, for a much needed defensive center.

Interesting factoid about Beauregard...he might be the only player in NHL history effectively traded for himself twice; Later in 1992 he was traded to Philadelphia for future considerations, and a year later was sent back to Winnipeg to complete the deal. Traded for himself twice, and within a year's time!

That Tkuchuk trade last year was pretty bad. Obviously not the worst of all time, but worth mentioning. Loser: Atlanta, big time.

Not even the worst Tkachuk trade.

St.Louis trading Nagy, Handzus, Taffe, and the pick that became Ben Eager for Tkachuk is one of my all-time worst trades. Especially when coupled that offseason with Craig Conroy for Cory Stillman and you have a pretty horrible offseason for the Blues that saw two Selke contenders who brought decent offense shipped off for defensively irresponsible players who weren't that much better offensively...but that was to be expected with Larry Pleau in charge.

Carson was not a bag of pucks. He is the only player I am personally aware of in NHL history to score 30 goals playing as a third line center.

The worst trade for us had to be the Federko trade. If we would have kept Oates, and MacLean for that matter, we would have had an even more successful 90's, and in Oates' benefit, we would have got him a cup.
