Turkey 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 I agree that I'd rather not see Pavel or Hank fighting (although I also wouldn't cry if they did once in a blue moon). I have no problem with players sticking up for the stars. I think if the average joe gets a cheap shot, though, they can defend themselves. If plucky little Dan Cleary can dance with Pronger (win or lose it doesn't matter) then anyone can do the same. I think the key is to distinguish between hits that deserve an enforcer's retribution and hits that don't. I don't think most enforcers are making the distinction anymore. CopenhagenWing 38 Report post Posted February 6, 2008 For once that ***** Iginla took his visor off. Hopefully, he can do it from now on, instead of acting like his ***** boy Phaneuf. Jovanovski didn't leave him much choice by shedding his lid. Iginla reluctantly had to follow suit.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 7, 2008 CGY-PHX Man, with the screaming crowd in CGY this was one exciting game! Iginla and Jovo went at it in the 1st and then CGY comes back from 0-3 to win in the SO. Iginla had (shoot me for saying this cuz this cliche can be retired) a Gordie hat trick too! Been watching alot of PHX and Mueller is a stud - watch this kid as he'll be around for awhile if Gretz doesnt screw him up. PHX is still a tad streaky which I think is fueled by Gretz's unbridled emotion, which is both good and bad. Could be a game that devistates them. We'll see. Let's pick up Mueller.. maybe we can trade Quincey, Meech, a 1st and a second for him and Doan?
calfan 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 Jovanovski didn't leave him much choice by shedding his lid. Iginla reluctantly had to follow suit. What makes you say he reluctantly had to follow? Jovo took his off, Iginla nodded at him and took his off too. At least with Jovo you know he's not going to use the opportunity to get the jump on you. And at least with Iginla, Jovo knew the invitation wouldn't result in Iginla skating away leaving him looking like an idiot, or worse, leaving him to take the lone unsportsmanlike penalty. I get a kick out of these comments about Iginla and his visor. Ever been in a hockey fight? More often than not the gloves are off and the fists are flying without much warning. How do you take your helmet off in that situation? And what about the supposed tough guys who wiggle the gloves and then back away as soon as the other guy drops his. You want the guy to drop his gloves and his helmet and then watch the ***** skate away - I don't think so.

Iginla has more than enough time in most of his fights to take the visor off but doesn't. He did it that time because he was afraid of looking like an obvious puss with Jovo taking his off. I rarely see it in the NHL. WHL more often, but even then, not always. Keep hating Iginla. He's only better than every forward on the Wings.

Pretty much how I feel about fighting more/less, especially your last sentence quoted. I like most 1-on-1 fights in hockey just like anybody else, but fighting in here to me, generally speaking, is really overhyped. I don't drool or do cartwheels when a fight actually happens. I get just as excited to see a scrap more/less compared to a penalty shot, nifty stick handling for a goal, a glove save on a point-blank shot, etc. Basically, no one thing about hockey over-excites me or keeps me just dead silent. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 I think Downey would kick Mac's ass. I dont think Downey would kick Mac's ass, but he is definitely the better fighter. Downey right now is slightly better than the McCarty we last saw on the Wings. But McCarty has declined now the past couple years with age, as we saw during his Flames' stint...so theres really not much doubt IMO as to who's better in that department. therock48880 14 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 that's a knee slapper. Did you see Mac fight last year? We're not talking about the McCarty of 5 years ago, we're talking about the McCarty of today. No doubt in my mind the Downey would win. (and I'm a HUGE McCarty fan)

Hank 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 Wow, Iginla took off his helmet for a fight? Color me shocked. Paint me with the same brush! I'm still in shock that he tipped his cap before a tilt. And against Jovo of all people! I would have expected Iggy to dress in full riot gear before taking on a beast like Jovo-cop.
Guest micah Report post Posted February 7, 2008 I think Downey would take 8 of 10 against D-Mac. I like Darren, but yeah, he hasn't impressed in the fighting department for years. I don't think either has ever really been a top-10 kinda guy when it comes to fisticuffs though - I think of them as being just tough enough to mannage to not get pounded when they fight legit heavies. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 that's a knee slapper. Mac couldn't beat anybody his last year in Calgary, so Downey is a better fighter, even though all his fights are draws.

To be honest, I'd love to see them both get ice time (assuming Mac can get in shape) and cut Drake. Then rotate Downey in and out with some people to rest them the rest of the way.
