Thrashers priority is to re-sign Hossa...

Sorry for bombarding these boards with yet another Marian Hossa thread, but i just wanted to pass this info on...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=AuCo...p&type=lgns

Quote from the article:

Don Waddell (Atlantas GM), said he'd be more interested in players than draft picks if he decides to deal Hossa.

"I know with all the teams I've talked to what we would be interested in," he said. "If we ever get to that point, I'm pretty confident there would be multiple teams that would be very interested in Marian."

Hossa already has turned down the Thrashers' offer for a four-year deal worth $28 million. He has tried to avoid commenting on his contract talks with Atlanta, but he said before the All-Star game his decision will be influenced by his confidence in the Thrashers' ability to remain competitive.

"It's not about money," Hossa said. "I just want to make sure I do the right decision. When I sign for long term, I don't want to sign and then we're not winning."

Thoughts???

It all depends on what kind of money it would take to lock up Hossa long-term in Detroit. If he's willing to take, say, $6-7 million from a team like Detroit that is always at the top of the league it's possible and if I were Holland I'd be willing to give up some significant assets.

If Hossa wants in the $8-9 even 10 million range, it would be very, very hard to work things out over the next few years.

He turned down 4 years / $7 mil per year from ATL. And there's the rub, would he turn down $7 mil from DET?

I want him on the team. But if we can't get him, we need a player like him to run the 2nd line and 2nd PP unit.

guys calm down it is not Hossa who is going to make deal in 15 days. He can sign with us all he wants during offseason but it is up to Atlanta how pricey it is going to be 'right now'.

Frankly, I don't see Hossa coming to Wings this season or next due to his salary. (unless we let Cleary go and Hossa takes a ridiculous amount of paycut)

I miss pre cap era sometimes.

Well not surprisingly he wants to sign long-term with a team that can and will contend for the Cup every year. Detroit is one of those teams, but while they've done a good job year in year out, there are others as well.

Hossa would be a dandy of a pick up, but were going to have to give up alot to get him. What scares me the most is not re-signing him after we give talent up for him. The league needs to do something about this. Dont get me wrong though, I'd love to have Hossa on the team for sure.

Waddel is scouting Montreal last 10 games or more... There is going to be some kind of trade with Habs for sure...

Yeah. It looks like Higgins will be the main guy going back. Which is a shame, because Flip and Higgins are very similar players, with Higgins having gotten much more ice time over his short career with the Habs..

Lets stop and assume we pick him up in the offseason. Here's the Wings in TWO years: (estimates)

Z - 7

Hossa - 7

Dats - 6.7

Homer - 2.25

Draper - 1.583

Cleary - 2.5

Hudler - 1.5

Franzen - 1.5

Maltby - .9

Filppula - 2

Kopecky - .75

2 more forwards (maybe Sammy) - 1.5 total

Lids - 7.45

Raf - 6

Kronner - 3

Cheli - .85

Lebda - .85

Ericson - .65

Kindl - .65

Ozzie - 1.417

Howard - .85

Grand Total = 56.05

Amazing, this is actually feasible if the cap goes to around 56 mil. Wow, this would rock but I wont be counting on it.

So long Samuelson, Hudler, Meech, and a couple draft picks

Do you really think Atl would take that trade??? How would Sammy, Hudler, Meech equivalte to a Hossa type??? Not at all. Now If you take Filpula, Ericson (spelling), Hudler and maybe a bit more (prospects, picks) that may be more possible. They are not going to give Hossa away for a bag of pucks, a midget, and an underachiever.

I do like the way he is talking. Convince Hossa that Zeta, Lids are staying for a while longer. We already have Dats, Raf, Oz and some more cemented in for a while. Show him that the winning here in detroit is not a short lived theory but a long term reality and we may have him.

Sales of soccer players in Europe includes the renegotiation of the current contract. The aim obviously being for the player to earn more money (not just a raise but a signing bonus) but also ensure that the player signs a longterm contract so that the team gets a return on the investment. The exact same system will not work in the NHL but I don't think making a little room for negotiations is such a bad idea.

Not only that, but we'd have to trade one of Filppula or Hudler to land Hossa and probably someone else, so there's another couple million off the books. Things would look pretty good with Hossa locked up with us for the next four or so years.

you people have to remember that Waddel is not packing it in for the season, they still have a shot at the post season, so he is going to want someone who can help them make a run in the playoffs. that is not going to be sammy/meech/hudler.

Thank you! At least someone is seeing reason here.

Ah, the universal trade package. It's so interesting that you can trade Samuelsson, Hudler, Meech, and "a couple draft picks" for any player in the NHL.

Why does everyone seem to think "one man's trash is another man's treasure" applies to the NHL trade deadline? It doesn't.

You have to give something up to get something.

And all this priority to RESIGN Hossa is just a trade talk?

To make the price go even higher?

Btw I love it when in these trade-threads Sammy,Lebda,Hudler & Co are "trash",but in "Sammy has to learn how to shoot" type of threads they are very valuable members of the best team in the NHL.

I would love to get him. We'd for sure have to give up Flip for him. He is probably the only player I'd give up Flip up for though.

I wasn't implying they're "trash"; what I meant was they don't have enough trade value to get a guy like Hossa. Everyone thinks the Wings can just throw our expendable players away to get a superstar. They can't.
